Description: Tuning the photonic band gap (PBG) to the electronic band gap (EBG) of Au/TiO2 catalysts resulted in considerable enhancement of the photocatalytic water splitting to hydrogen under direct sunlight. Au/TiO2 (PBG-357 nm) photocatalyst exhibited superior photocatalytic performance under both UV and sunlight compared to the Au/TiO2 (PBG-585 nm) photocatalyst and both are higher than Au/TiO2 without the 3 dimensionally ordered macro-porous structure materials. The very high photocatalytic activity is attributed to suppression of a fraction of electron-hole recombination route due to the co-incidence of the PBG with the EBG of TiO2 These materials that maintain their activity with very small amount of sacrificial agents (down to 0.5 vol.% of ethanol) are poised to find direct applications because of their high activity, low cost of the process, simplicity and stability. Notes: During the last 3 to 4 months of their pregnancies, six healthy mothers provided a daily record of their own activity together with the amount of fetal movement. Fetal movement increased throughout most of the daytime to reach a peak in the evening. The mothers detected most movement when they were lying, less when they were sitting and least when they were standing. Later in the day the mothers were less likely to be standing and more likely to be sitting; when fetal movement was measured with the mother in the sitting posture, more movement occurred as the day progressed. Mealtimes did not have any effect upon movement. Some implications of these findings, both for the assessment of fetal well-being and for theories of the development of circadian rhythms in the infant, are discussed.

Notes: We report the carbon-13 and oxygen-18 isotope ratios in cellulose from the early and late wood of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.). The δ13 C value of the early wood correlates best with that of the late wood of the previous year. The δ18O value of the early wood correlates best with that of the late wood of the same year. We suggest that a biochemical explanation of these data is that there is a rapid cycle between hexose monophosphates and triose phosphates in oak stem tissue during cellulose synthesis. Evidence in support of this explanation is provided by the intramolecular distribution of 14C in labelled fructose extracted from cores of wood that had been supplied with [1−14C]- and [6-14C]glucose.

Notes: Abstract A retrospective survey of 75 patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (ICD Nos. 143, 144, 145) resident in the County Borough of Stoke-on-Trent, England, and 150 controls has been carried out by interview. The controls were matched for age, sex, occupation and place of residence. There was no difference in the prevalence or duration of denture wearing, although male controls had their dentures remade more frequently. Male patients practised oral hygiene procedures less frequently when they had their own teeth than controls. Habitual beer–drinking was more common and greater quantities were drunk by male patients than controls. Habitual cigarette smoking was less and pipe smoking greater among male patients than controls. Tobacco chewing, which was restricted to miners, was equally common (45 %) in the two groups. Among miners, the combined habit of tobacco chewing and pipe smoking was more common among patients (100%) than among controls (25%).
