Notes: This report succinctly summarizes a number of experiments in which human leucocytes were activated by the mitogen in the supernatant of cultured Mycoplasma arthritidis (MAS). Lymphocytes from a large number of donors were found to be reactive when the two parameters of lymphoproliferation and of production of gamma interferon were analysed. Lymphocytes of cord blood origin were also reactive in lymphoproliferation. Their interferon production was low, but this has been established previously for mitogens in general. During the course of the studies, different batches of MAS were tested, including most recently a purified preparation. All of these were active. Removal of accessory cells adherent to nylon wool column abolished MAS reactivity, whereas it has little effect on lymphoproliferation induced by phytohaemagglutinin (PHA). MAS reactivity was also strongly reduced when monoclonal anti-HLA-DR antibodies were added to the leucocyte cultures.

Notes: Summary Quantitative receptor autoradiography on sections of the human brain raises methodical problems of which some are relevant also for studies in animal tissue, but others are unique in studies of human brain tissue. Procedures for the following methodical aspects are discussed image analysis for quantitation of the regional distribution of receptor densities, saturation analysis on autoradiographs, influence of age and post-mortem delay and quenching of β-radiation in brain tissue. The solutions proposed to these problems make receptor autoradiography in the human brain to a reliable method for studies of chemical neuroanatomy.

Notes: Conclusion In summary our results show that photoconductivity and optical absorption under cyclotron resonance conditions in high purity n-GaAs are more complex than it has been assumed previously. As cyclotron resonance can only be measured with non zero free electron concentration, and because the 2p − shallow donor level remains below the N=0 Landau level for all magnetic field strengths, a certain population of 2p − states must be present and thus the interference between both absorption processes is unavoidable as long as 2p −→2p + electric dipole transitions are activated by ionized impuritics. This interference gets most drastically manifest at high intensities causing an apparent splitting of the photoconductivity line. Even at lower intensities however when the dip in the photoconductivity line is not observable, all optical characteristics previously attributed to cyclotron resonance are affected by the shallow donor absorption. The energy separationE 2p+−E 2p− of shallow donors in a magnetic field is exactly equal to ħw CR only for isolated impurities in the effective mass approximation. The same electric stray field of ionized impurities which cause the activation of 2p −→2p + absorption may shift the donor energy levels due to stark effect. For magnetic field strengthsB〈1 T a field dependent deviation ofE 2 +−E 1p − from the cyclotron resonance quantum energy was observed [15] amounting up to 8 pc. In this case we expect that the peak positions of photoconductivity and absorption do not spectrally coincide and do not occur at the resonance magnetic field strength of 0→1 Landau level transitions. Thus effective masses determined by standard cyclotron resonance methods at low magnetic fields may be incorrect by a few percent.

Description / Table of Contents: The influence of the structure on the strength of bulk polyamide 6 is investigated. The strength is characterized as resistance of the material to plastic deformation as well as t o crack propagation. Measurements of the fracture toughness of polyamide 6-injection mouldings within the scope of linear elastic fracture mechanics are reported. Results are discussed in connection with light and electron microscopic investigations especially as to the secondary fracture behaviour.

Description / Table of Contents: The terms adhesion and bonding strength are scientifically interpreted. The factors influencing on the adhesion and their strength are discussed with the examples of the following systems: Steel-primer-PVC, and Zn, Cr, Al, Cu on PMMA. Correlations between the bonding strength and the electrochemical potential of the metals are established. For the interpretation of the phenomena a “microelectrolyte-model” is developed.

Description / Table of Contents: With PE gel-fibres can be achieved draw rations over 20 by cold drawing. The strength level is lower than in the case of hot drawing. First data refer to a modified deformation model of high strength fibres.
