    Description: This study of the interstitial water concentration-depth distributions of iodide, bromide, boron, d11B, and dissolved organic carbon, as represented by absorbance at 325 nm (yellow substance: YS) and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), is a follow-up of the extensive shipboard program of interstitial water analysis during ODP Leg 131. Most of the components studied are associated with processes involving the diagenesis of organic matter in these sediments. Three zones of the sediment column are discussed separately because of the different processes involved in causing concentration changes: 1. The upper few hundreds of meters: In this zone, characterized by very high sedimentation rates (〉1200 m/m.y.), interstitial waters show very sharp increases in alkalinity, ammonia, iodide, bromide, YS, and LIF, mainly as a result of the diagenesis of organic carbon; 2. Whereas below 200 mbsf concentration gradients all show a decreasing trend, the zone at ~ 365 mbsf is characterized by concentration reversals, mainly due to the recent emplacement of deeper sediments above this depth as a result of thrust-faulting; 3. The décollement zone (945-964 mbsf) is characterized by concentration anomalies in various constituents (bromide, boron, d11B, manganese, LIF). These data are interpreted as resulting from an advective input of fluids along the zone of décollement as recent as ~ 200 ka. Possibly periodic inputs of anomalous fluids still seem to occur along this décollement zone.

    Description: Studies of Be distributions in subduction zone sediments will help to understand questions regarding the enrichments of cosmogenic Be-10 in arc volcanic rocks. Analyses of Be-10 and Be-9 in sediments of Ocean Drilling Program Site 808, Nankai Trough and Be-9 in porewaters of Site 808 and Sites 671 and 672, Barbados ridge complex, show significant decreases in solid phase Be-10 and large increases of porewater Be-9 at the location of the décollement zone and below or at potential flow conduits. These data imply the potential mobilization of Be during pore fluid expulsion upon sediment burial. Experiments involving reaction between a décollement sediment and a synthetic NaCl-CaCl2 solution at elevated pressure and temperatures were conducted in an attempt to mimic early subduction zone processes. The results demonstrate that Be is mobilized under elevated pressure and temperature with a strong pH dependence. The Be mobilization provides an explanation of Be-10 enrichment in arc volcanic rocks and supports the argument of the importance of the fluid processes in subduction zones at convergent margins.

    Description: The pH of the surface ocean is a sensitive function of its alkalinity and total inorganic carbon concentration, properties which also control the partial pressure of atmospheric carbon dioxide (Broecker and Peng, 1982). Thus, an accurate proxy for past ocean pH could yield information about variations in atmospheric CO2. Recently, it has been suggested that the boron isotopic composition of foraminiferal tests depends on the pH of sea water as well as its isotopic composition (Vengosh et al., 1991, doi:10.1016/0016-7037(91)90139-V; Hemming and Hanson, 1992, doi:10.1016/0016-7037(92)90151-8). Here we present boron isotope and elemental data for sedimentary pore fluids and isotope data for bulk foraminiferal samples from a deep-sea sediment core. The composition of the pore waters implies that sea water boron concentrations and isotopic composition have been constant during the past 21 Myr, allowing us to reconstruct past ocean pH directly from the foraminiferal isotope data. We find that 21 Myr ago, surface ocean pH was only 7.4 ±0.2, but it then increased to 8.2 ±0.2 (roughly the present value) about 7.5 Myr ago. This is consistent with suggestions (Popp et al., 1989; Cerling, 1991; Arthur et al., 1991) that atmospheric CO2 concentrations may have been much higher 21 Myr ago than today.

    Notes: It has been demonstrated that the linear-chain charge-transfer salt, decamethylferrocenium tetracyanoethanide (DMeFc)(TCNE), is a ferromagnet with a transition temperature of ∼4.8 K. This low-temperature 3D ordering has been attributed to a strong intrachain and a weak interchain interaction. To study these interactions, we have determined the Tc up to 20 kbar by measuring the ac susceptibility χ at low frequency. Our results show that the Tc increases with pressure at a rate of ∼0.22 K/kbar, while the χ peak indicative of the ferromagnetic transition continues to decrease rapidly. A small peak was also detected above the main transition at pressures above 3 kbar. This new peak persists even after the pressure is removed. The result from dc magnetization suggests that this corresponds to a metamagnetic state. For the first time, we have observed pressure-induced phase-transition in this material.

    Notes: A specially designed recirculating system was used to maintain P. vannamei broodstock for maturation, mating and spawning in the same tank. Two groups of different size shrimp were stocked in this system in Phase I (8 May to 5 September 1989) and Phase II (5 September to 5 December 1989). Results showed that this recirculating system was able to maintain good water quality keeping broodstock maturing, mating and spawning with high stocking density (10 shrimp/m2) and low mortality (6%). Seventy-eight percent of spawned eggs were collected by a submerged egg collector. Mating success was very poor (3.4%) in Phase I even though there was normal spawning frequency. Mating success and nauplii production were much improved in Phase II. During Phase II 104 male and female broodstock housed in a 6 m3 tank produced 1.6 ± 106 nauplii (with 70% mating success) in three months. This study illustrated that broodstock size was a critical factor of successful mating and fertilization for P. vunnamei, and also, reduction of handling stress and lowered disturbance of the shrimp greatly enhanced the mating success.

    Notes: Summary Radiolabeled murine monoclonal antibody TNT-1, directed against the nuclear histones of degenerating cells, was used to treat human colon adenocarcinoma HT-29 spheroids in vitro. The therapeutic effects of131I-TNT-1 were investigated as a function of the radioactive dose, treatment time, and number of treatments. Efficacy of treatment was assessed by TNT-1 antibody uptake, spheroid growth delay, and morphological examination using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). From these studies, it was determined that the therapeutic effect increased with the number of doses and the duration of treatment. Spheroids treated for 24 h showed approximately two to four times more cell death than those with a 2-h treatment. As previously shown in animal models, additonal treatment with radiolabeled TNT-1 produced an expanding number of TNT-1 targets, and subsequent treatments were more effective as shown by antibody uptake studies. Microscopic examinations demonstrated that morphological changes consistent with spheroid destruction correlated well with antibody uptake data and increased gradually with dose, treatment time, and frequency of treatments. At the ultrastructural level, destruction of cells in the treated spheroids included the formation of porous cell membranes, crater-like holes (SEM), blebbing, and dissolution of cytoplasmic organelles (TEM). With continued culture, the injured spheroids were found to disaggregate after intensive131I-TNT-1 therapy (e.g. 50 µCi/ml or 100 µCi/ml with two or three 24-h treatments). These findings suggest that tumor spheroids can be used as an in vitro model to evaluate monoclonal antibody therapy using TNT-1 and other candidate mAbs directed against intracellular antigens exposed in degenerating cells of tumors.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper the functionu=Ψrsinθ in cylindrical coordinates (r,θ,z) is introduced into the equation for free torsional vibration of bodies of revolution (whereΨ=v / r represents the angle of twist). With the static fundamental solution (−1 /R) a mixed BEM / FEM equation is derived. The domain integral term in the equation is discretized by Serendipity elements instead of commonly used constant value finite elements in the literature. The equation is an algebraic eigenvalue one. The dynamic fundamental solution (e 1λR /R) is also used for deriving the other mixed BEM / FEM equation. An appropriate iterative solution procedure is described. An algebraic eigenvalue equation can be obtained and its solution accuracy is almost interior meshing independent. A number of examples are studied. The results show the good economy and high accuracy of the algorithms proposed.
