Abstract In the usual description of heavy fermion systems by the Anderson Hamiltonian only the Coulomb interaction betweenf-electrons is taken into account explicitly, while the Coulomb interaction between conduction electrons and betweenf-electrons and conduction electrons is contained on the average in the parameters of the Hamiltonian, the hybridization interaction and the position of thef-level. In this paper, in particular, the Coulomb interaction between conduction electrons andf-electrons is studied with help of a mean-field approximation based on the slave-boson approach. It is found that the ferromagnetic exchange interaction, which is in competition with the hopping-induced antiferromagnetic interaction, leads to a non-trivial renormalization of the Kondo temperature and ferromagnetic instabilities.
