Notes: The bootstrap current Jb=−IcP'B/〈B2〉 and χi= (square root of)2NνiMiTi(Ic/e)2〈1/B2〉/||∇ψ ||2 are valid for both the banana and the Pfirsch–Schlüter regimes for any finite value of the collision frequency at a radius where the local aspect ratio A approaches unity. Here, I=RBt with R the major radius, Bt the toroidal magnetic field strength, and the prime denoting the derivative with respect to the poloidal flux ψ. Thus, the bootstrap current does not vanish, even in the collisional regime, when A approaches unity. The physical reason for this dramatic result is that the magnitudes of the electron and ion parallel viscosity approach infinity as A approaches unity. This also indicates that the conventional theory underestimates the magnitude of bootstrap current in an ultralow-aspect-ratio tokamak. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An approximate analytic expression for plasma viscosity in finite aspect ratio tokamaks is constructed from all the asymptotic limits. The resultant viscosity coefficient is compared with the numerical results of the solution of the linearized drift kinetic equation. Neoclassical fluxes are reformulated in terms of the viscosity and friction coefficients. These fluxes can be employed to study the omnigeneous property of high-beta small, or large aspect ratio tokamaks. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The system of single bunch injection (SBI) for the storage ring NIJI-IV was completed. The system was used for the injection of the short pulse beams from an electron gun into only one of the 16 rf buckets in the ring. On a compact storage ring, the multipulse beams in one pulse train can be stored into only one of many bunches by one injection. The optimum number of the grid pulse in one pulse train was determined to improve the storage efficiency and the storage current by one injection. The keeping time of the bump orbit was calculated by using the transfer matrices. The optimum pulse number obtained by the calculation is 2. In the SBI system, the number of grid pulses in one pulse train can be selected by the gate circuit. A snap off diode and a clip line are used to generate 2 ns grid pulses. The measured grid pulse was shorter than the longitudinal space 5.5 ns of the rf bucket with voltage of −80 V. The EIMAC Y-646B cathode-grid assembly is used as the electron source. It is expected that the injection system provides a higher peak current and easier free electron laser use operation in comparison with the rf-knockout system. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We investigated the magnetization of the ultrafine cadmium ferrite particles formed during the coprecipitation method and discussed the origin of enhanced magnetization based on the magnetic properties. A transmission electron microscopy micrograph shows aggregation of fine particles having two kinds of shapes, fibrous and granular. X-ray diffraction patterns of the specimens prepared by the coprecipitation method are composed of peaks corresponding to CdFe2O4, Cd(OH)2, and α-FeO(OH). The pattern indicates that the peaks of CdFe2O4 are fairly broad, suggesting the formation of a very small crystallite, with an average size of ∼8 nm. The ultrafine CdFe2O4 particles exhibit ferromagnetic behavior and have a net magnetization of 89±5 emu/g at 6 K. These results suggest that there must be many ferromagnetic clusters consisting of Fe3+ ions at the B sites around Fe3+ ions at the A site by the A–B interactions. Thus, such a change in the distribution of Fe3+ ions in the ultrafine CdFe2O4 particles results in increasing magnetization with decreasing particle size. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Endodermal cell walls of the three dicotyledoneous species Pisum sativum L., Cicer arietinum L. and Ricinus communis L. were isolated enzymatically and analysed for the occurrence of the biopolymers lignin and suberin. From P. sativum, endodermal cell walls in their primary state of development (Casparian strips) were isolated. Related to the dry weight, these isolates contained equal amounts of suberin (2·5%) and lignin (2·7%). In contrast, the endodermal cell walls of C. arietinum and R. communis, which were nearly exclusively in their secondary state of development, contained significantly higher proportions of suberin (10–20%) and only traces of lignin (1–2%). The results of the chemical analyses were supported by a microscopic investigation of Sudan III-stained root cross-sections, showing a Casparian strip restricted to the radial walls of the endodermis of P. sativum and well-pronounced red suberin lamellae in C. arietinum and R. communis roots. Compared with recently investigated monocotyledoneous species, higher amounts of suberin by one order of magnitude were detected with the secondary state of development of dicotyledoneous species. Furthermore, the carbohydrate and protein contents of primary (Clivia miniata Reg. and Monstera deliciosa Liebm.), secondary (C. arietinum and R. communis) and tertiary endodermal cell walls (Allium cepa L. and Iris germanica L.) were determined. The relative carbohydrate content of secondary endodermal cell walls was low (14–20%) compared with the content of primary (42–50%) and tertiary endodermal cell walls (60%), whereas the protein content of isolated endodermal cell walls was high in primary (13%) and secondary (8%) and low in tertiary endodermal cell walls (0·9–2%). The results presented here indicate that the quantitative chemical composition of primary, secondary, and tertiary endodermal cell walls varies significantly. Finally, cell wall proteins are described as an additional important constituent of endodermal cell walls, with the highest concentrations occurring in primary (Casparian strips) and secondary endodermal cell walls.

Notes: Abstract An 11-month-old girl was referred to our hospital because of nausea and poor physical activity. She had a 5-month history of infantile spasms, which were successfully treated with valproic acid (VPA) and vitamin B6. Laboratory studies revealed hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis, mainly due to distal type renal tubular acidosis (RTA). Although a renal biopsy, performed 2 months after the onset of RTA, did not demonstrate tubulointerstitial lesions, her clinical course, in which administration of VPA led to an episode of RTA, with gradual subsidence on VPA removal, suggested that the probable causative agent of her distal type RTA was VPA. Although proximal type RTA associated with VPA administration has been reported, distal type is rarely seen. To our knowledge, a similar case has not been reported previously.

Notes: Abstract The effects of suramin on the growth of seminal vesicles (SVs) of neonatal mice were investigated in vitro. SVs from 0-day-old male mice were cultured in serum-free chemically defined medium supplemented with 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT, 10-8 M) and insulin (10 μg/ml), alone and in combination. Prior to culture. SVs from 0-day-old mice had no epithelial branches. SVs cultured in medium with DHT formed numerous epithelial branches, while epithelial branching did not occur in SVs cultured without DHT. The addition of suramin (0.2 mM) to medium containing DHT inhibited the formation of epithelial branches almost completely. Removal of suramin from the medium on days 2, 4, and 6 of culture initiated the formation of epithelial branches. Suramin (0.2 mM) reversibly decreased 3H-thymidine-labeling indices (3H-LI) of both epithelium and mesenchyme of SVs cultured in medium with DHT plus insulin or DHT alone during 8 days of culture. Suramin also decreased 3H-LI of both epithelium and mesenchyme of SVs cultured in medium with insulin alone. The present study indicates that suramin reversibly inhibits not only androgen-dependent but also androgen-independent growth and ductal branching morphogenesis of neonatal mouse SVs.

Notes: Summary Cell kinetic study plays an important role in treatment planning of brain tumour patients. MIB-1 antibody has recently become available, which detects Ki-67 antigen even in the formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded specimens. We performed MIB-1 immunostaining in 50 meningiomas and 50 neurinomas, and estimated the cell cycle time (tc) and potential doubling time (Tpot) from MIB-1 staining index (MIB-1 SI) and mitotic index (MI). MIB-1 SI logarithmically correlated with MI in both meningiomas and neurinomas. The tc and the Tpot were expressed as a function of the mitosis time (tm), while the tm is known to be around one hour and not exceeding two hours. When the tm was assumed to be one hour, the average tcs of meningiomas and neurinomas were 6.53±3.56 days and 7.67±3.27 days, respectively. The Tpots were447 × (MIB-1 SI)−1.29 × tm in meningiomas, and490 × (MIB-1 SI) −0.98 × tm in neurinomas. The tumour doubling times (Tds) were calculated from serial imaging studies in 22 neurinomas and 15 meningiomas. The Tds were formulated as794 × (MIB-1 SI) −0.83 in meningiomas and1380 × (MIB-1 SI) −0.97 in neurinomas. Most of the Tds correlated well with the Tpots in meningiomas and neurinomas, and exceeded values of the Tpot when the tm is assumed to be one hour, although a few tumours showed unexpectedly longer Tds. The Tpot and the tc estimated from MIB-1 SI and MI are clinically useful parameters for predicting the growth potential of meningiomas and neurinomas where no other simple methods are available.

Notes: Abstract A case of a 38-year-old male with traumatic shock complicated by methamphetamine intoxication is presented. The patient was involved in an assault which resulted in cardiac tamponade and right ventricular outflow laceration. Pericardiocentesis was immediately performed. However, profound metabolic acidosis greatly in excess of that expected from the short duration of the shock was revealed by arterial blood gas analysis. Another cause of the metabolic acidosis was suspected. The patient subsequently admitted to intravenous use of methamphetamine. Following hemodynamic and metabolic stabilization by continuous pericardial drainage and intravenous administration of sodium bicarbonate, the patient underwent cardiac surgery. His postoperative course was uneventful. There is a substantial association between methamphetamine users and traumatic accidents. In such cases, early identification of drug use is important. Marked metabolic acidosis, which conflicts with the diagnosed cause of shock, may be a clinical clue to methamphetamine intoxication.

Notes: Abstract  We investigated the possible role of dopamine receptors in the mediation of copulatory disorder induced by defeat experience in male mice, using l-dopa and apomorphine. To generate the copulatory disorder, male mice were attacked 20 times daily for 5 consecutive days, as intruders in confrontation with an aggressive resident. Following the repeated exposure to defeat, virtually all intruder males failed to display copulatory behavior towards estrous females. Acute injection of apomorphine (25, 50, 75 μg/kg, SC) significantly increased both the incidence and the frequency of copulatory elements (mounting and intromission) in a dose-dependent manner. The combination of l-dopa with carbidopa, a dopa decarboxylase inhibitor, also increased significantly copulatory behavior, revealing an inverted U-shaped dose-effect curve. In both cases, locomotion and digging frequencies were significantly decreased. This evidence suggests that dopaminergic mechanisms are involved in the mediation of social stress-induced copulatory disorder.
