Notes: Summary Autoimmune bullous diseases, such as bullous pemphigoid or pemphigus vulgaris. occasionally develop in psoriatic patients. In addition, a novel subepidermal bullous disease with autoantibodies against a lower lamina lucida antigen of 200kDa has recently been reported in association with psoriasis. We describe here a patient with psoriasis vulgaris who developed epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA). Direct immunofluorescence revealed linear deposition of IgCl and C3 at the basement membrane zone. The patient's serum bound to the dermal side of salt-split normal human skin. However, immnumohlol analysis demonstrated that the patient's serum reacted with an EBA antigen of 290 kDa. EBA should be included in the list of autoimmune diseases associated with psoriasis vulgaris.

Notes: A 64-year-old man presented with a bullous eruption which clinically and histopathologically resembled dermatitis herpetiformis. However, direct immunofluorescence analysis showed IgG deposits at the basement membrane zone, indicating a relationship with bullous pemphigoid or epidermolysis bullosa acquisita. Indirect immunofluorescence studies on salt-split skin showed binding of IgG mainly on the dermal side of the blister. Immunoblot analysis revealed a novel 200 kDa dermal antigen that could be associated with a major pathogen in this blistering a disease. The histopathological similarity to dermatitis herpetiformis and the immunofluorescence findings indicating bullous pemphigoid or epidermolysis bullosa acquisita seem typical of a distinct subepidermal blistering disease characterized by this 200 kDa antigen. However, the pathogenetic role of autoantibodies against this antigen should be further elucidated before confirming whether this case represents a novel subepidermal blistering disease or a special variant of bullous pemphigoid.

Notes: We report the case of a 15-year-old girl who presented at 11 years of age with an interesting, acquired and, to our knowledge, unique blistering disease. It involved both skin and mucous membranes with extensive oral and periungual lesions, clinically resembling paraneoplastic pemphigus. Skin biopsy showed an inflammatory cell infiltrate in the upper dermis with numerous leucocytoclastic nuclear fragments, neutrophilic papillary microabscesses and a small subepidermal bulla. Direct and indirect immunofluorescence studies showed marked intercellular staining with IgA and less prominent staining with IgG. Granular deposition of IgA and, to a lesser extent IgG and C3, was also seen along the basement membrane zone. Immunoblotting and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay studies showed both IgG and IgA antibodies to desmocollin, desmoglein 3 and desmoplakin. However, despite extensive investigation, no underlying neoplasm was found. Treatment with dapsone and sulphapyridine proved ineffective but methylprednisolone and azathioprine have reduced the blistering. We believe that this patient is unique for her combination of IgA and IgG antibodies to desmoplakin, desmocollin and desmoglein 3, although further studies may provide further clarification.

Notes: We report the first case of lichen planus pemphigoide (LPP) secondary to ingestion of ramipril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor. Clinical, histological and immunofluorescent findings were all consistent with a diagnosis of LPP. Linear basement membrane zone (BMZ) staining with IgG and C3 was only seen at the rood of split-skin preparations and circulating autoantibody to the BMZ was present at a titre of 1/100. Controlled immunoblotting of epidermal extracts detected the bullous pemphigoid antigens of 230 and 180 kDa.

Notes: Pemphigoid gestationis is an autoimmune bullous disorder affecting pregnant women which typically presents in the second and third trimester of pregnancy with an itchy bullous eruption on the abdomen and limbs. The diagnosis is confirmed by the presence of complement-binding IgG antibasement membrane zone (BMZ) antibodies, which bind to the roof of salt-split skin. We describe a case of clinically typical pemphigoid gestationis with the combination of intercellular IgG and BMZ IgG and C3 staining on immunofluorescence, a pattern which is unique for this condition.

Notes: We investigaged the reactivity of pemphigus vulgaris (PV), pemphigus vegetans, pemphigus foliaceus (Pf), Brazilian Pf, bullous pemphigoid (BP), and epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) sera with an immunoblot analysis using human epidermal and dermal extracts as a source of antigen. To obtain epidermal and dermal extracts three different dermo-epidermal separation methods were used: namely, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) separation, heat separation, and dispase separation. All the 15PV and the seven pemphigus vegetans sera demonstrated a 130-kDa PV antigen in epidermal extracts obtained by all the three methods. Furthermore, three PV sera also showed a 160-kDa Pf antigen, desmoglein. Ten of 14 Pf sera and six of 15 Brazilian Pf sera reacted with desmoglein in the same pattern in all the three epidermal extracts. Fifteen of the 22 BP sera showed reactivity with 230-kDa BP antigen in the same pattern in all the three epidermal extracts, whereas 14 BP sera delected the 180-kDa BP antigen in extracts of EDTA-and heat-separated epidermis but not in dispase-separated epidermal extract. Dermal extracts were obtained by EDTA- and heat-separated dermis, and all six EBA sera labelled a 290-kDa EBA antigen in both samples. These results suggest that heat-separated skin is as useful as EDTA-separated skin for detecting various autoantigens, but heat separation is preferable because the preparation time is shorter.

Notes: To search the new magnetic regenerator materials in the temperature range near 4 K, specific heat behavior of pseudobinary compounds ErxDy1−xSb(x=0, 0.2, 0.6, 0.8, and 1) was studied at temperatures from 2 to 40 K. The ordering temperature shifts from 3.5 to 9.5 K with increasing the concentration of the Dy+3 ion. The compounds of 1(approximately-greater-than)x(approximately-greater-than)0 show the gradual magnetic phase transition. The change of entropy associated with the magnetic phase transition is close to R ln 2 for all compounds. The change of magnetic entropy up to 40 K increases rapidly with decreasing the concentration of the Dy+3 ion, which implies that more excited states exist. The compounds of lower concentration of the Dy+3 ion have properties well suited for magnetic regenerative material around the temperature range of 4 K. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The heat capacity of the ternary compounds RNiGe(R=Er, Dy, Gd, and Y) was studied in the temperature range between 2 and 40 K. From the heat capacity curves, Néel temperatures are found to be 3.3, 7.4, and 10.7 K for ErNiGe, DyNiGe, and GdNiGe, respectively. The heat capacity of YNiGe was well fitted with an average Debye temperature of 272 K in the temperature range between 2 and 40 K. The changes of magnetic entropy indicate a strong influence of the crystal field on the Er+3 and Dy+3 ion in ErNiGe and DyNiGe compounds. These results suggest the possibility of using these compounds as magnetic regenerator materials near the temperature of 4.2 K. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The magnetization-curling mode in a columnar-structure film with perpendicular magnetization is studied on the assumption that the film is a two-dimensional array of cylinders. The angular dependence of the nucleation field HN is calculated by the Ritz method and compared with that for the coherent-rotation mode. It is found that the magnetization rotates in the curling mode for a large reduced radius S and in the coherent-rotation mode for a small S. The angular dependence of HN is different from that in an infinite cylinder. If S is large, the magnetization rotates in the curling mode for any value of θ0, where θ0 is the angle between the applied field and the cylinder axis. When S is medium, the magnetization rotates in the coherent-rotation mode for a small θ0 and in the curling mode for a large θ0. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
