    Notes: In this paper, the dynamic behavior of a strain gauge pressure transducer is analyzed with the one-dimensional elastic wave theory. An infinite series type formulation for the output strain of the transducer is put forward and proved to be correct by comparing the analytic results with those from experiments. Analysis on a real pressure transducer suggests that the transducer will be unreliable as the rise time of a pressure pulse is too short (e.g., less than 500 μs), and the maximum pressure readings will be either much too high or much too low, depending on the rise time and the base length of the strain gauge, etc. The results presented will be helpful for practical dynamic pressure measurements. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract: We have cloned a σ receptor from rat brain and established its functional identity using a heterologous expression system. The cloned cDNA (1,582 bp long) codes for a protein of 223 amino acids that possesses a single putative transmembrane domain. The amino acid sequence of the rat brain σ receptor is highly homologous to that of the σ receptor recently cloned from guinea pig liver and a human placental cell line but is not related to any other known mammalian receptors. When expressed in HeLa cells, the rat brain σ receptor cDNA leads to a two- to threefold increase in haloperidol binding, and this cDNA-induced binding is sensitive to inhibition by several σ receptor-specific ligands. Kinetic analysis using the heterologous expression system has revealed that the rat brain σ receptor interacts with haloperidol with an apparent dissociation constant (KD) of 3 nM. Functional expression of the cloned rat brain σ receptor in HeLa cells also leads to an increase in the binding of two other σ ligands, namely, (+)-pentazocine and (+)-3-(3-hydroxyphenyl)-N-(1-propyl)piperidine (PPP). Pharmacological characterization of the cloned rat brain σ receptor reveals that it exhibits severalfold higher affinity for clorgyline than for 1,3-di(2-tolyl)guanidine, it interacts with progesterone and testosterone, and its interaction with PPP is markedly enhanced by phenytoin. In addition, transfection of MCF-7 cells, which do not express type 1 σ receptor mRNA or activity, with the cloned rat brain cDNA leads to the appearance of haloperidol-sensitive binding of (+)-pentazocine, a selective type 1 σ receptor ligand. These data show that the cloned rat brain cDNA codes for a functional type 1 σ receptor. Northern blot analysis with poly(A)+ RNA isolated from various rat tissues has indicated that the σ receptor-specific transcript, 1.6 kb in size, is expressed abundantly in liver and moderately in intestine, kidney, brain, and lung.

    Notes: The solid state reaction of Co,Ti with an epitaxially grown Si1−xGex strained layer is investigated in this article. The reaction was performed in a rapid thermal annealing system. The resulting films were characterized by Rutherford backscattering, Auger electron spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, x-ray diffractometry, and scanning electron microscopy. The electrical resistivity and Hall effect were measured in the temperature range of 77–300 K. Rapid thermal annealing of Co/Si0.8Ge0.2 at 650 °C results in a Co(Si0.9Ge0.1) film with cubic crystalline structure. At higher temperature CoSi2 is formed with Ge segregation towards the surface. After a multi-step annealing, a highly oriented CoSi2 layer can be grown. For TiN/Ti/SiGe, the ternary phase of Ti(Si1−yGey)2 is formed, with a smooth surface and with resistivity comparable to the lowest value exhibited by TiSi2. The Co/Ti/SiGe/Si reaction is studied for the first time, demonstrating that the uniformity of Co/SiGe reaction is improved by applying the Co/Ti bilayer. A TiN(O)/CoSi2(Ge)/Si multilayer structure is formed, and the CoSi2(Ge) layer exhibits a strongly textured structure. Low temperature measurement reveals that the CoSi2(Ge) layer has a resistivity slightly higher than that of CoSi2. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Experimental and theoretical studies focusing on the formation of carbon clusters are described. In the experiment on discharge in liquid chloroform, a series of perchlorinated fragments of C60 was synthesized and a scarce amount of C60 was detected. In the laser vaporization experiments, it was found that the production of C 60 + and other fullerene ions could be promoted by doping chlorine-containing compounds into carbon targets. Chlorine atoms were found to play key roles of not only tying up the dangling bonds of the polycyclic carbon clusters, but also catalyzing the formation of fullerenes. The results showed that C60 and other fullerenes are formed from growth of small carbon species and supported the “Pentagon Road” scheme of the fullerene formation mechanism. On the other hand, ab initio calculations were carried out on formation reactions of C60 from its various perchlorinated fragments, C60−2mCl10. The monotonically decreasing calculated energies of reactions with growing size of the fragments confirm that the formation reaction is energetically favorable.

    Notes: Abstract. To study sex differences in mutation rate in primates, we sequenced the third introns of the AMGX and AMGY genes from humans, orangutans, and squirrel monkeys and estimated that the male-to-female ratio of mutation rate is α= 5.14 with the 95% confidence interval (2.42, 16.6). Combining this data set and the data sets from ZFX/ZFY and SMCX/SMCY introns, we obtained an estimate of α= 5.06 with the 95% confidence interval reduced to (3.24, 8.79). The α value is significantly higher in higher primates than in rodents.

    Notes: Abstract Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is widely used as a gasoline oxygenate for more complete combustion in order to reduce the air pollution caused by motor vehicle exhaust. The possible adverse effects of MTBE on human health is a major public concern. However, information on the metabolism of MTBE in human tissues is lacking. The present study demonstrates that human liver is active in metabolizing MTBE to tert-butyl alcohol (TBA), a major circulating metabolite and a marker for exposure to MTBE. The activity is localized in the microsomal fraction (125 ± 11 pmol TBA/min per mg protein, n = 8) but not in the cytosol. This activity level in human liver microsomes is approximately one-half of the value in rat and mouse liver microsomes. Formation of TBA in human liver microsomes is NADPH-dependent, and is significantly inhibited by carbon monoxide (CO), an inhibitor of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes, suggesting that CYP enzymes play a critical role in the metabolism of MTBE in human livers. Both CYP2A6 and 2E1 are known to be constitutively expressed in human livers. To examine their involvement in MTBE metabolism, human CYP2A6 and 2E1 cDNAs were individually co-expressed with human cytochrome P450 reductase by a baculovirus expression system and the expressed enzymes were used for MTBE metabolism. The turnover number for CYP2A6 and 2E1 was 6.1 and 0.7 nmol TBA/min per nmol P450, respectively. The heterologously expressed human CYP2A6 was also more active than 2E1 in the metabolism of two other gasoline ethers, ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) and tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME). Although the contributions of other human CYP forms to MTBE metabolism remain to be determined, these results strongly suggest that CYP enzymes play an important role in the metabolism of MTBE in human livers.

    Notes: Abstract Purpose: We tested the hypothesis that because of their reduced neural efficiency, glaucoma patients should have increasingly impaired thresholds as external noise is added to a stimulus. Method: We compared the performance of 20 normals (mean age = 39 years) with that of 15 patients with early glaucoma or at very high risk for glaucoma (mean age 45 years). All patients had normal visual acuity. Contrast thresholds were measured on two sets of tasks: (1) behavioral and (2) sweep visually evoked potentials (VEPs). Two stimuli were used (a) 7.5 Hz reversing gratings of 0.69 cpd, and (b) 5.5 cpd gratings. Noise was binary and contrast varied from 0 to 80%. Psychophysical thresholds were determined using a staircase which employed a spatial four alternative forced choice procedure (4AFC) and converged on 50% correct. Sweep VEP thresholds were determined by extrapolation to zero volts as a function of log contrast. Results: Differences between normal subjects and patients with early glaucoma were not significant without noise. Both the absolute size of the difference and its significance increased as noise level increased. For the behavioral thresholds these trends were clearer with the 5.5 cpd grating, while for the sweep VEPs they were more clear for the 0.69 cpd grating. Conclusion: The performance deficit of glaucoma patients which may be minimal under normal testing conditions is magnified when external noise is added to the stimulus. VEPs and psychophysical thresholds show interesting differences in their sensitivity to this effect. Implications for the early detection of glaucoma are discussed.

    Notes: An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA, as a crosslinking agent) content on the curing kinetics of the polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). EGDMA may cause a crosslinking-facilitated gel effect which reduces the termination rate of living free radicals and enhances the overall reaction rate, but it may also induce a diffusional resistance for the reactants so that some free monomers are trapped and pendant vinyl groups are prohibited from reaction by the crosslinked structure. At higher content of EGDMA, the later effect becomes predominant, and the reaction rate and the final conversion are limited. The exothermic peak of the curing reaction tends to carry a shoulder and then split into two peaks as the amount of EGDMA is increased, possibly due to a later reaction of the trapped monomers and pendant vinyls. The heat of reaction measured by DSC in the scanning mode is 61.2 kJ/mol C=C. The activation energy (E) of the curing reaction ranges from 56.5 to 78.3 kJ/mol C=C depending on the EGDMA content and the type of operation. The diffusion-limited reaction rate and the different thermal history experienced in the nonisothermal and isothermal curing can result in variations of the results in the activation energy measurement. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
