Notes: We have prepared Fe-doped InP epilayers by chemical beam epitaxy using a thermal atomic Fe beam. Epilayers having high resistivities ((approximately-greater-than)107 Ω cm) were obtained over a wide range of Fe concentrations. Resistivities as high as 1.3×108 Ω cm have been obtained. Such resistivity is almost equal to the theoretical value of 1.37×108 Ω cm that we estimate for intrinsic InP. The current-voltage characteristics exhibit both an ohmic and a space-charge-limited regime, and are consistent with the theory of single-carrier injection into a trap-free insulator. Pinning of the Fermi level near midgap by Fe-related deep levels is the mechanism by which the epilayer is made highly resistive. At room temperature, these traps are apparently deep enough that the carrier emission rate is negligible.

Notes: The optical absorption coefficient in ultrathin (∼10 A(ring)) hydrogenated amorphous germanium (a-Ge:H) layers deposited on hydrogenated amorphous silicon layers was determined by in situ reflectivity measurements. The decrease in the absorption coefficient in the ultrathin a-Ge:H layers, compared to that of thick films, is explained by an upward shift in the conduction band edge due to quantum confinement of electrons with effective mass of 0.4m0.

Notes: Sputtered Mo-Permalloy thin film is expected to possess great potentiality in soft magnetic properties which can be realized chiefly by controlling sputtering conditions. The effects of sputtering parameters, such as argon pressure, bias voltage, and preheating temperature, on the magnetic properties, of FeNiMo sputtered films have been investigated. The magnetic anisotropy field Hk was found to decrease with the raising preheating temperature while coercivity Hc presented the contrary trend. High effective permeability can be acquired at low argon pressure, adequate preheating temperature, and bias voltage. Close relationships among effective permeability, anisotropy field, magnetostriction coefficient, and half-height width Δθ50 were found. Annealing is available for increasing effective permeability.

Notes: Ag/Si nanocomposite films were prepared by the radio-frequency magnetron cosputtering method. The fine structure of the plasmon resonance absorption peak was found in film samples. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicated that the samples were composed of a two-layer structure, which accounted for the structure of the optical absorption spectra. The peak located near 445 nm is the plasmon resonance absorption peak of Ag nanoparticles embedded in a partially oxidized Si matrix. Its intensity decreases with decreasing film thickness and disappears in a very thin sample. The peak located near 380 nm originates from the plasmon resonance absorption of the thoroughly oxidized surface layer of the sample. Its intensity does not change with increasing thickness, but it cannot be observed in the very thick sample. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Nanocomposite films consisting of nanosized Ag particles embedded in partially oxidized amorphous Si matrices were prepared by radio frequency cosputtering deposition. Subsequent heat treatment at different temperatures ranging from 200 to 500 °C and its effects on the optical absorption of the films were investigated by spectrometry in the wavelength ranging from 200 to 1200 nm. "Surface resonance state" is introduced to discuss the broadening, blue-shift, and intensity decrease of the plasmon resonance absorption peak with decreasing Ag particle size. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this study, α-Fe/Nd2Fe14B nanocomposite magnets with strong crystallographic texture were prepared by controlled melt spinning. For a relatively low wheel speed of 10 m/s, the c-axis texture of the Nd2Fe14B crystals is predominantly perpendicular to the plane of the ribbon, but it switches to parallel to the ribbon plane direction at a higher wheel speed of 20 m/s. The magnets show strong magnetic anisotropy between in and out of the ribbon planes. High remanence of 0.74Ms and a large energy product of 24.3 MGOe were observed parallel to the ribbon plane direction in the magnets prepared at a wheel speed of 20 m/s. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Field trials in two cropping seasons and two locations in central China were conducted on 60 Chinese autumn-sown wheat varieties to assess their partial resistance to powdery mildew. Mean levels of disease severity ranged from close to 0 to more than 90%. The method of inoculation and the location in which trials were conducted affected the relative performance of the varieties, but these effects were much smaller than the main effect of variety. The area under the disease progress curve was highly correlated with final disease severity, but both were poorly correlated with apparent infection rate. Disease severity was regressed against frequencies of virulence in the Blumeria graminis (syn. Erysiphe graminis) f sp. tritici populations in the trial plots. A vertical distance (D) from the mean mildew severity to the fitted line was calculated for each variety and was used to quantify partial resistance. Five of the 60 varieties, ‘Hx8541’, ‘E28547’, ‘Chuan1066’, ‘Zhe88pin6’ and ‘Lin5064’, consistently expressed relatively low levels of disease despite high frequencies of virulence in the pathogen and had consistently high D-values. They may therefore have good levels of partial resistance.

Notes: Summary We examined the effect of different combinations of esmolol and nicardipine upon the circulatory response to tracheal intubation. One hundred patients were randomly allocated into five groups of twenty to receive pretreatments of saline or different combinations of esmolol (0.5 or 1.0 mg.kg−1) and nicardipine (15 or 30 µg.kg−1). Significant tachycardia persisted over a 5-min period after intubation in all five groups compared with baseline levels (p 〈 0.05). Patients receiving esmolol 1.0 mg.kg−1 and nicardipine 30 μg.kg−1 showed no significant change in systolic blood pressure after tracheal intubation compared with baseline and significant lower peak systolic blood pressure than those receiving saline (p = 0.023).

Notes: Anti-Golgi autoantibodies (AGAs) and their targets have been reported from several diseases. However, the association of AGAs, selective autoantigens and related clinical diseases is still obscure. In this study, the presence of AGAs in the sera of 5983 patients was screened to explore the association of AGAs and clinical diseases. By means of indirect immunofluorescence using HEp-2 cells, sera of 12 patients bearing AGAs were identified. The location of recognized Golgi autoantigen(s) was confirmed by the treatment of monensin and double immunostaining using β-COP. Using the immunoelectron microscopy, AGA immunoreactivity was clearly demonstrated at a stack structure, characteristic of the Golgi complex. Furthermore, analysis of the 12 AGA-positive sera by Western blot revealed at least 15 components of Golgi antigens with relative molecular weights ranging from 54 to 350 kDa, and several Golgi autoantigens identified may be novel. Notably, over half of the AGA-positive cases found belong to non-autoimmune diseases, particularly hepatic disorder. This study presents the association of AGAs, components of the Golgi complex and clinical diseases.

Notes: Background House dust mite allergy is closely associated with allergic diseases. Blomia tropicalis mite species is an important clinical species in the tropics. The cDNA clone encoding Blo t 3, a group 3 allergen from B. tropicalis, has been isolated in our laboratory. Objective This study was designed to generate Blo t 3-specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) for the detection, characterization and purification of this allergen. Methods Mice were immunized intramuscularly with naked plasmid DNA encoding Blo t 3 gene with in vivo electroporation. Hybridomas were generated by the fusion of the splenocytes to X63-Ag8.653 myeloma cells. Purified native Blo t 3 was obtained by mAb immuno-affinity purification and the allergenicity of native Blo t 3 was determined by human IgE enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).Results A panel of class-switched and high-affinity mAb recognizing a wide spectrum of Blo t 3 epitopes have been generated. These mAbs are useful for western immunoblot assay, sandwich ELISA and affinity purification of native Blo t 3. Allergenicity of native Blo t 3 protein was examined with 44 mite-allergic sera and approximately 57% of the tested sera had positive serum IgE reactivity to the native Blo t 3.Conclusions These results demonstrated that intramuscular injection of naked DNA encoding Blo t 3 gene combined with in vivo electroporation is an effective and simple method to raise monoclonal antibodies that can be used for characterization and purification of Blo t 3.
