    Beschreibung: We use Global Positioning System (GPS) velocities and dislocation modeling to investigate the rate and nature of interseismic strain accumulation in the area affected by the 1908 Mw 7.1 Messina earthquake (southern Italy) within the framework of the complex central Mediterranean microplate kinematics. Our data confirm a change in the velocity trends between Sicily and Calabria, moving from NNW-ward to NE- ward with respect to Eurasia, and detail a fan-like pattern across the Messina Straits where maximum extensional strain rates are ~65 nanostrains/yr. Extension normal to the coast of northern Sicily is consistent with the presence of SW–NE trending normal faults. Half-space dislocation models of the GPS velocities are used to infer the slip-rates and geometric fault parameters of the fault zone that ruptured in the Messina − 1.3 earthquake. The inversion, and the bootstrap analysis of model uncertainties, finds optimal values of 3. 5 + 2.0 − 0.2− 0.7 and 1.6 + 0.3 mm/yr for the dip–slip and strike–slip components, respectively, along a 30 + 1.1° SE-ward dipping normal fault, locked above 7.6−2.9 km depth. By developing a regional elastic block model that + 4.6 accounts for both crustal block rotations and strain loading at block-bounding faults, and adopting two different competing models for the Ionian–Calabria convergence rates, we show that the measured velocity gradient across the Messina Straits may be significantly affected by the elastic strain contribution from other nearby faults. In particular, when considering the contribution of the possibly locked Calabrian subduction interface onto the observed velocity gradients in NE-Sicily and western Calabria, we find that this longer wavelength signal can be presently super-imposed on the observed velocity gradients in NE-Sicily and Calabria. The inferred slip-rate on the Messina Fault is significantly impacted by elastic strain from the subduction thrust. By varying the locking of the subduction thrust fault, in fact, the Messina Fault slip-rate varies from 0 to 9 mm/yr.

    Beschreibung: Application of light detection and ranging (LIDAR) technology in volcanology has 7 developed rapidly over the past few years, being extremely useful for the generation 8 of high‐spatial‐resolution digital elevation models and for mapping eruption products. 9 However, LIDAR can also be used to yield detailed information about the dynamics of 10 lava movement, emplacement processes occuring across an active lava flow field, and the 11 volumes involved. Here we present the results of a multitemporal airborne LIDAR survey 12 flown to acquire data for an active flow field separated by time intervals ranging from 13 15 min to 25 h. Overflights were carried out over 2 d during the 2006 eruption of Mt. Etna, 14 Italy, coincident with lava emission from three ephemeral vent zones to feed lava flow in 15 six channels. In total 53 LIDAR images were collected, allowing us to track the volumetric 16 evolution of the entire flow field with temporal resolutions as low as ∼15 min and at a 17 spatial resolution of 〈1 m. This, together with accurate correction for systematic errors, 18 finely tuned DEM‐to‐DEM coregistration and an accurate residual error assessment, 19 permitted the quantification of the volumetric changes occuring across the flow field. We 20 record a characteristic flow emplacement mode, whereby flow front advance and channel 21 construction is fed by a series of volume pulses from the master vent. Volume pulses 22 have a characteristic morphology represented by a wave that moves down the channel 23 modifying existing channel‐levee constructs across the proximal‐medial zone and building 24 new ones in the distal zone. Our high‐resolution multitemporal LIDAR‐derived DEMs 25 allow calculation of the time‐averaged discharge rates associated with such a pulsed flow 26 emplacement regime, with errors under 1% for daily averaged values.

    Beschreibung: We define the geometric and kinematic characteristics of the fault activated during the Mw = 6.3, 6 April 2009 L’Aquila earthquake, from the modeling of Envisat and COSMO-SkyMed (the first ever X-band interferogram inverted for a coseismic dislocation study) DInSAR interferograms. Our best-fit solution for the main shock is represented by a normal fault 16 km long and 12 km wide, with a small right-lateral component, dipping 47 SW with a maximum slip of 90 cm. Although the seismic dislocation probably ended at 1km depth, the updip projection of the fault plane corresponds to the northern segment of the mapped Paganica–S. Demetrio fault, where alignment of surface breaks was observed in the field. The absence of this fault in existing seismic source catalogues suggests that an improved approach, involving detailed surface and subsurface geological and geophysical investigations, is needed for a better assessment of the seismic hazard at the local scale.

    Beschreibung: We propose a formal procedure to validate the hypothesis of a causal relationship between great tectonic earthquakes and volcanic eruptions through a forward statistical test. This approach allows such a hypothesis to be evaluated in an objective way, ruling out any possible unconscious overfitting of the past data. The procedure consists of two steps: (a) the computation of the stress perturbation in a volcanic area due to some selected seismic event, by means of a spherical, layered, viscoelastic and self- gravitating earth model; and (b) the application of a statistical test to check the differences in the spatio-temporal distribution of eruptions before and after the earthquake, weighting each eruption with the stress perturbation induced at the volcano at the time of the eruption. Finally, for the sake of example, we apply the method to the case of the recent Engano earthquake in Sumatra (June 2000) and the Denali earthquake in Alaska (November 2002).

    Beschreibung: A continuous global positioning system station (CGPS) provides accurate coordinate time series, while episodic GPS stations (EGPSs), which operated throughout short measurement sessions, are generally used to improve the monitoring spatial density. In an urban environment, EGPSs are typically equipped with removable mounts (topographical tripod or bipod). In this paper, a method is proposed in order to evaluate vertical surface motions by means of differential measurements of removable mount EGPSs with respect to a nearby reference CGPS. For each day, the correct position of this CGPS is used as reference for the quick differential EGPS measurements to allow the correction of their positions. The method is applied to evaluate the subsidence in the centre of Bologna, which is characterized by significant vertical movements, probably related to seasonal climatic effects, and where these movements differ significantly even among closely spaced locations

    Beschreibung: The morphometry of a great number of scoria cones, belonging to volcanic fields of various geodynamic settings, has been measured and analyzed, addressing the question whether there is a relation between the prevalent cone shape in a given field and the geodynamic setting of the field itself. Morphometric analysis was carried out on freely downloadable digital elevation models (DEMs). The accuracy of the used DEMs and the associated error in scoria cone morphometry were determined by cross-comparing high-resolution LIDAR-derived DEMs, USGS NED, TINITALY DEM and ASTER GDEM. The 10-m TINITALY/01 and USGS NED DEMs are proven to be suitable for scoria cone morphometry, whereas ASTER GDEM can be used reliably for cones with volume greater than 30 × 106 m3. According to a detailed morphometry of all scoria cones, we propose that the cones related to subductional setting show relatively higher values of Hco/Wco and lower values of Wcr/Wco than the cones related to extensional setting. The detected differences can be imputable to peculiar eruption dynamics resulting in slight but systematic changes in shape, and differences in lithological and sedimentological characteristics that govern post-eruptive erosion. To constrain the pathway of scoria cone erosion, the detected morphometric changes were also interpreted using a simple linear degradation model. Utilizing the obtained simulation results, the inferred initial cone base, and the age of scoria cones, we calculated a diffusion coefficient (K) for several dated cones, which are related to the prevalent climate. Our results, despite the high error associated, allow to assess the median K for all volcanic fields. Due to the complexity of the factors behind, it is not easy to understand if the prevalent shape characterizing a certain volcanic field is due mainly to sin-eruptive or post-eruptive mechanisms; however, our distinction between the two main geodynamic settings may be the first step to decipher these factors.

    Beschreibung: Elasto-plastic models for pressure sources in heterogeneous domain were constructed to describe, assess, and interpret observed deformation in volcanic regions. We used the Finite Element Method (FEM) to simulate the deformation in a 3D domain partitioned to account for the volcano topography and the heterogeneous material properties distribution. Firstly, we evaluated the extent of a heated zone surrounding the magmatic source calculating the temperature distribution by a thermo-mechanical numerical model. Secondly, we included around the pressurized magma source an elasto-plastic zone, whose dimension is related to the temperature distribution. This elasto-plastic model gave rise to deformation comparable with that obtained from elastic and viscoelastic models, but requiring a geologically satisfactory pressure. We successfully applied the method to review the ground deformation accompanying the 1993–1997 inflation period on Mt Etna. The model considerably reduces the pressure of a magma chamber to a few tens of MPa to produce the observed surface deformation. Results suggest that the approach presented here can lead to more accurate interpretations and inferences in future modeling-based assessments of volcano deformation.

    Beschreibung: A procedure, based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) for high-resolution geodetic data inversion, was developed to estimate non-uniform slip distribution during the 2002 September 22 M3.7 earthquake rupture occurring only one month before the 2002–2003 eruption of Etna volcano. FEM-generated synthetic Green’s functions are combined with an inverse algorithm to simulate deformation of the earthquake for a 3-D problem domain that takes into account heterogeneity of material properties in the volcanic edifice. The inversion of DInSAR data shows complex kinematics of the northeastern flank of theEtna volcano involving the Pernicana fault system. We detailed the coseismic shear-rupture mechanism and highlighted a tensile mechanism, never observed before, related to a first attempt of magma intrusion, which preceded the following October 26 eruption.

    Beschreibung: Between 2007 and early 2008, the INGV monitoring networks on Etna volcano recorded a recharging phase that climaxed with a new effusive eruption on 13 May 2008, and lasted about 14 months. A dike-forming intrusion was accompanied by a violent seismic swarm, with more than 230 events recorded in the first six hours, the largest being ML = 3.9. In the meanwhile, marked ground deformation was recorded by the permanent tilt and GPS networks, and sudden changes in the summit area were detected by five continuously recording magnetic stations. Poor weather conditions did not allow direct observation of the eruptive events, but important information was provided by infrared satellite images that detected the start of lava fountains from the eruptive fissure, feeding a lava flow. This flow spread within the Valle del Bove depression, covering 6.4 km on the south-eastern flank of the volcano in a few hours. The seismicity and deformation pattern indicated that the dike-forming intrusion was propagating northwards. It produced a dry fracture field, which generated concern for the possibility that the eruptive fissures could expand downslope towards populated areas. Monitoring and modeling of the multi-disciplinary data, together with the simulations of ash dispersal and lava flows, allowed us both to infer the eruptive mechanisms and provide a correct interpretation of the ongoing phenomena, furnishing useful information for civil defense purposes. We describe how this approach of feedback between monitoring and research provides critical support to risk evaluation.
