Description / Table of Contents: Summary The ,,Marjolin's ulcer” is a malignant lesion which is developed especially at chronic wounds after burn trauma. The latency from primary trauma to the malignant transformation is about 30 years. The lesion is more aggressive than other squamous cell carcinomas. We report on the combined radiation and surgical therapy of an 65-year-old patient with this lesion on the right hand and regional lymph node metastases. The extensive tissue defect after wide excision was reconstructed with a reversal radial forearm flap.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The hypothesis of the viral etiology of certain neoplasms could recently be confirmed by a series of remarkable findings. It was due to the doubtlessly far reaching consequences of the detection of a tumor-producing substance in the starting material for the production of numerous vaccines (inactivated poliomyelitis-, measles- and adenovirus vaccines, attenuated poliovirus-vaccines), that the problem was examined as whether this substance may come into the vaccines or not. After the injection of suspensions of various tissue cultures into 1-day-old hamsters (cricetus auratus) sarcomas were found only in those groups of animals to which a large dose of viable SV40 had been administered. the rate of sarcoma incidence as well as the date of appearance depended on the dose of-SV40 injected. The distinct dose-dependance of the tumors induced by SV40, i.e. the fact that tumors only appear after injection of high doses of virus and then only in the immediate neighbourhood of the site of injection, suggests that the development of tumors is caused or at least favoured by a local stimulating effect of the injected viral material on the tissue. The nodular neoplasms of large size (chickenegg), the morphology of which is described in detail, are polymorphic sarcomas with spindle-like and round cell formations as well as with monstrous giant cells and distinct mitotic figures The formation of capsules and the simultaneous rapid growth of the tumor account for the prolonged regressive alterations; numerous anaemic necroses are present.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A report is given on changes which appear remote from the site of injection in the CNS of hamsters (cricetus auratus) after SV40-injection on the first day of life. Animals without body tumors which had been injected with higher doses of SV40, showed changes of the plexus chorioideus in a frequency vastly exceeding that of sarcomas at the site of injection in the respective experimental groups. The changes in the plexus, moreover, appear noticeably later. These changes within the CNS can be considered as early stages, although the animals were sacrificed at a time when the maximal frequency of the appearance of body tumors at the site of injection had passed. They consist in hyperplasia of the plexus, which in some regions already corresponds to the diagnosis of a papilloma of the plexus. Regarding these virus-induced neoplasms one may speak of either a multicentric or multilocal origin. Their independence of origin from the administered SV40-dose can be explained by the assumption that the transport of the injected virus or of virus proliferated at the site of injection via viraemia will occur in that moment when a certain threshold concentration at the site of injection is reached or exceeded. A simultaneous injection of poliovirus possibly exerts an synergic effect on the oncogenous effect of SV40. These results seem to confirm the opinion that a virus vaccine may on no account contain an extraneous virus, — especially one of possible oncogenous activity.

Notes: Abstract. The present study was performed to evaluate possible interactions between estrogen and progesterone on peak cancellous bone mass. Ovariectomized (OVX) growing rats were treated with 17β-estradiol (4.8 μg/day), progesterone (4.8 mg/day), a combination of the two sex steroids, or with vehicle for 14 days beginning 7 days after OVX. The tibiae were removed for histomorphometric analysis of the proximal metaphysis. OVX and growth each resulted in net resorption of cancellous bone at a sampling site adjusted for longitudinal bone growth. Estradiol and progesterone treatment each antagonized bone loss by inhibiting the decrease in trabecular number. Estradiol increased but progesterone had no effect on trabecular thickness. Progesterone did not influence either osteoclast number or the resorption of the pretreatment fluorochrome label. Estradiol reduced osteoclast number and inhibited label resorption, the latter change being accentuated by combination treatment. Estradiol reduced and progesterone enhanced the mineral apposition and bone formation rates. The results indicate that estradiol and progesterone have independent activities on cancellous bone turnover during growth. Whereas estradiol reduced bone turnover, progesterone had a stimulatory effect on bone formation. These findings suggest that progesterone has a role in establishing and maintaining peak cancellous bone volume during growth.

Notes: Summary Hypothalamic (T hy), spinal (T sc) and colonic (T c) temperatures were measured in Pekin ducks spontaneously dabbling for food in cold water (5° C). In agreement with observations in the pigeon and the fowlT hy was found to be consistently lower by about 0.5° C than the other core temperatures. The drop ofT hy during dipping head and neck into the cold water was not substantially greater than that ofT sc, while both changed more thanT c. The measurements do not support the assumption that the hypothalamic region in the duck is exposed to substantially greater temperature fluctuations than other thermosensitive parts of the body core.

Notes: Abstract. Nuclear effects due to the presence of spin-1 isosinglet 6-quark clusters in the deuteron on the extraction of both spin-independent and spin-dependent neutron structure functions are investigated. The x-dependences of the 6-quark cluster structure functions are estimated by using a perturbative QCD (pQCD) dimensional counting rules. Within this framework, the ratio of the deuteron structure function to the free nucleon structure function can be well described. We find that the nuclear effect on the extracted spin-dependent neutron structure function is very different from that on the spin-independent neutron structure function. The effect enhances the Bjorken sum by about 10%, whereas it decreases the Gottfried sum by about 7%. The formalism for calculating nuclear effects is further used to evaluate the spin-dependent structure function of the $^3$ He nucleus and a good self-consistent check is obtained.

Notes: Abstract. The flavor and helicity distributions of the $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ hyperons for both valence and sea quarks are calculated in a perturbative QCD (pQCD) based model. We relate these quark distributions to the fragmentation functions of $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ , and calculate the z-dependence of the longitudinal spin transfer to $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ in lepton deep-inelastic scattering (DIS). It is shown that the spin transfer to the $\Lambda$ is compatible with the first HERMES results at DESY, and further tests are suggested. We also make predictions for the z-dependence of the $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ longitudinal polarizations in neutrino (antineutrino) DIS processes. We investigate the sea contribution to the fragmentation functions, and we test a possible scenario where the sea quarks in $\Lambda$ (or the sea antiquarks in $\bar{\Lambda}$ ) are negatively polarized, whereas the sea antiquarks in the $\Lambda$ (or the sea quarks in $\bar{\Lambda}$ ) are positively polarized. The asymmetry of the polarized fragmentation functions of the sea quarks and antiquarks to $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ provides a way to understand the different behavior between the $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ spin transfers observed in the recent E665 experiment at FNAL.

Description: A combined lidar-photometer method that permits the retrieval of vertical profiles of ash and non-ash (fine-mode) particle mass concentrations is presented. By using a polarization lidar, the contributions of non-ash and ash particles to total particle backscattering and extinction are separated. Sun photometer measurements of the ratio of particle volume concentration to particle optical thickness (AOT) for fine and coarse mode are then used to convert the non-ash and ash extinction coefficients into respective fine-mode and ash particle mass concentrations. The method is applied to European Aerosol Research Lidar Network (EARLINET) and Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) Sun photometer observations of volcanic aerosol layers at Cabauw, Netherlands, and Hamburg, Munich, and Leipzig, Germany, after the strong eruptions of the Icelandic Eyjafjallajökull volcano in April and May 2010. A consistent picture in terms of photometer-derived fine- and coarse-mode AOTs and lidar-derived non-ash and ash extinction profiles is found. The good agreement between the fine- to coarse-mode AOT ratio and non-ash to ash AOT ratio ( 15 μm.

Description: Type II solar radio bursts are often indicators for impending space weather events at Earth. They are consequences of shock waves driven by coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that move outwards from the Sun. We simulate such type II radio bursts by combining elaborate three-dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) predictions of realistic CMEs near the Sun with an analytic kinetic radiation theory developed recently. The simulation approach includes the reconstruction of initial solar magnetic fields, the dimensioning of the initial flux rope of the CME with STEREO spacecraft data, and the launch of the CME into an empirical data-driven corona and solar wind. In this paper we simulate a complicated double CME event (a very fast CME followed by a slower CME without interaction) and the related coronal and interplanetary type II radio bursts that occured on 7 March 2012. We extend our previous work to show harmonic and interplanetary emission as well as the simulation's surprising ability (for these events at least) for predicting emission for two closely-spaced CMEs leaving the same active region. We demonstrate that the theory predicts well the observed fundamental and harmonic emission from ~20 MHz to 50 kHz, or from thehigh corona to near 1 AU. Specifically, the theory predicts flux, frequency, and time variations that are consistent with the presence or absence of observed type II emissions when interfering emissions are absent and are not inconsistent with observations when interfering type III bursts are present. The predicted and observed type II emission is predominantly fundamental for these 2 events. Harmonic emission occurs for the second CME only for a short time interval, when an extended shock has developed that can drive flank emission. The coronal and interplanetary emission follow closely hyperbolic lines in frequency-time space, consisting of a succession of islands of emission with varying intensity. The islands develop due to competition between the shock moving through varying coronal and solar wind magnetic field structures (e.g., loops and streamers), growth of the driven radio source due to the spherical expansion of the shock, and movement of the active radio sources from the shock's nose to its flanks.
