Description: The results of numerical simulation of stress–strain state in a hard rock mass area with the complex geological structures are presented. The variants of the stress value change are considered depending on the boundary conditions and physical properties of the model blocks. Furthermore, the possibility of in-situ stress formation under the influence of energy coming from the deeper Earth’s layers is demonstrated in terms of the Khibiny Massif.

Description: 〈span class="paragraphSection"〉〈div class="boxTitle"〉Abstract〈/div〉Electrical conductance 〈span style="font-style:italic;"〉G〈/span〉 at 100 kHz of Berea sandstone initially saturated with varying NaCl concentrations was measured by an impedance meter at decreasing water saturation. The obtained conductance 〈span style="font-style:italic;"〉G〈/span〉 values can be well simulated by the model equation composed of conductance of bulk pore water and that of mineral surfaces by introducing both tortuosities of bulk pore water τ〈sub〉b〈/sub〉 and mineral surfaces τ〈sub〉s〈/sub〉. The surface conductivity Σ〈sub〉s〈/sub〉 = 2.1 × 10〈sup〉− 10〈/sup〉 S and the tortuosity of mineral surfaces τ〈sub〉s〈/sub〉 = 2.6 in this equation can be valid for most of the data at varying water saturation except for the lowest water saturation (〈span style="font-style:italic;"〉S〈/span〉〈sub〉w〈/sub〉 = 0.05). The tortuosity of pore water τ〈sub〉b〈/sub〉 increased from 1.7 at 〈span style="font-style:italic;"〉S〈/span〉〈sub〉w〈/sub〉 = 1.0 to 15 at 〈span style="font-style:italic;"〉S〈/span〉〈sub〉w〈/sub〉 = 0.05 with a power law relationship. The present electrical conduction model with double tortuosities of bulk pore water τ〈sub〉b〈/sub〉 and mineral surfaces τ〈sub〉s〈/sub〉 can be considered as an alternative expression of the combined Archie's first and second laws in terms of tortuosities and would be useful for describing conductance of electrolyte containing partially saturated rocks including very low water saturation.〈/span〉

Description: During a three-year field study, interspecific and interannual differences in the trophic ecology of littoral fish species were investigated in the rocky intertidal of Helgoland Island (North Sea). We investigated trophic niche partitioning of common coexisting littoral fish species based on a multi tracer approach using stable isotope and fatty acids in order to show differences and similarities in resource use and feeding modes. The results of the dual tracer approach showed clear trophic niche partitioning of the five target fish species, the goldsinny wrasse Ctenolabrus rupestris, the sand goby Pomatoschistus minutus, the painted goby Pomatoschistus pictus, the short-spined sea scorpion Myoxocephalus scorpius and the long-spined sea scorpion Taurulus bubalis. Both stable isotopes and fatty acids showed distinct differences in the trophic ecology of the studied fish species. However, the combined use of the two techniques added an additional resolution on the interannual scale. The sand goby P. minutus showed the largest trophic plasticity with a pronounced variability between years. The present data analysis provides valuable information on trophic niche partitioning of fish species in the littoral zones of Helgoland and on complex benthic food webs in general.

Description: By his decease the Leyden Museum of Natural History has lost a Director, who during nearly thirty years has given all his energy to this Institution, has tried to extend and to complete its collections and to bring its internal arrangement more in agreement with modern views. In the first years of his employment at the Museum (Conservator, 1875\xe2\x80\x9484) he had the good fortune to study under the guidance of Hermann Schlegel and to be introduced by him in the System of the Mammals; for to this class he applied nearly all his scientific labour and he has published a great number of papers on them. Especially by his publications on the Bats and the Rodentia he became known as a learned and accurate scientific investigator. However a good deal of his time in the latest years of his life has been devoted to the foundation of a new Museum, in which he endeavoured to realise the idea of a complete separation between the scientific and the public collections and thus to effectuate \xe2\x80\x9edas Ideal eines naturhistorisehen Museums\xe2\x80\x9d.\nHis opinion regarding this question he explained in a communication to the International Congress of Zoology at Bern; for he was not only an assiduous visitor of these international assemblies, but as a President of the Congress at Leyden in 1895, he was also a member of the Comit\xc3\xa9 Permanent. Returning from the latest congress at Monaco he showed the first traces of an illness, that in a few months has ruined his vigorous constitution.
