    Description: La Siguanea inlet, one of the two inlets present in the Gulf of Batabanó, contains essential habitats such as seagrass beds and mangroves. However, it has been poorly studied and currently there is little information about the biological diversity in the area. The aim of this study was to make the first check list of fishes on this region of the Cuban archipelago. We used complementary methodologies such as multiple seine nets, gill net, drum lines, visual census and underwater video census. The inventory recorded 122 species of fishes distributed in 53 families. The best represented families were Haemulidae, Lutjanidae, Scaridae, Carangidae, Monacanthidae and Gerreidae. This finding coincided partially with similar studies done in other Cuban shelf areas, although the order of these may vary. During the surveys a high proportion of juvenile fishes was found, which suggests a possible nursery site that could be playing an important role in fish stocks in the area. This result contributes to raise the knowledge about marine biodiversity in Cuba and also for the Caribbean, providing a baseline of fish for the area. In this work we found a high diversity of fishes in La Siguanea inlet, as well as a high proportion of juveniles. Future studies that explore the composition and structure of fish stocks in the area are required; as well as studies on the possible connectivity between this area and the reefs in Punta Francés. Allowing a better understanding of ecological processes in the area, and in turn a better use and management of these natural resources.
    Description: La Ensenada de la Siguanea es una de las dos ensenadas presentes en el Golfo de Batabanó, en la cual se pueden encontrar importantes hábitats para el desarrollo de los peces como son los pastizales y los manglares. No obstante, esta ensenada ha sido poco estudiada y se cuenta con poca información sobre la diversidad biológica en el área. El objetivo de este estudio fue realizar, por primera vez para el área, un inventario de las especies de peces. Se emplearon diferentes metodologías de muestreo como redes de pesca, palangres, censos visuales y videos bajoel agua. Se inventariaron 122 especies de peces distribuidas en 53 familias. Las familias más diversas fueron Haemulidae, Lutjanidae, Scaridae, Carangidae, Monacanthidae y Gerreidae, coincidiendo parcialmente con resultados previos en otras regiones del país, aunque su orden puede variar. En los muestreos se encontró una alta proporción de juveniles de peces, sugiriendo que esta es una zona de crianza, que puede tener un rol importante en las poblaciones de peces en el área. Estos resultados contribuyen al conocimiento de la diversidad marina en Cuba y el Caribe, proporcionado una línea base de la ictiofauna para la Ensenada de la Siguanea. En este trabajo se encontró una alta diversidad de de peces en la Siguanea, así como un elevada proporción de juveniles. Se requieren de estudios futuros que exploren la composición y estructura de las poblaciones de peces en el área, así como la posible conectividad entre esta área y el Parque Nacional Punta Francés. Esto permitirá un mejor entendimiento de los procesos ecológicos en el área, y un mejor uso y manejo de los recursos naturales.

    Notes: Summary The efflux of sodium ions from the loggerhead turtle,Caretta caretta, was investigated when animals were acclimated to seawater, freshwater, and during the acclimation period after transfer from seawater to freshwater. The rate of sodium loss in animals acclimated to seawater was found to be 3 μM Na · g−1 · hr−1. Cannulation of the cloaca showed that only 5% of the gross efflux of sodium was via the cloaca and it was calculated that 60% of the gross efflux was via nasal gland secretion and 35 % via integumentary diffusional loss. Cannulation experiments indicated that a significant amount of sodium may enter the body via the cloaca. Transfer of animals from seawater to freshwater resulted in a decline of sodium efflux by 90–99 % within 6 hr, and a further decline to only approximately 0 01 μM Na · g−1· hr−1 after 1–2 days in freshwater. Cannulation experiments of individuals acclimated to freshwater indicated that the role of the cloaca in sodium loss in freshwater was minimal. It was calculated that sodium loss in freshwater is so small that survival in freshwater for at least 20 days is possible without active extraction of sodium from the medium. No evidence could be found for active uptake of sodium ions from freshwater baths byCaretta.

    Notes: Abstract Since 1968 an assiduous program of photoelectric observation of occultations of stars by the Moon has been pursued at McDonald Observatory. A total of about 600 events has been observed of which 254 have been published and a second list is in preparation. Timings derived from the reductions have errors of the order of 1 ms corresponding to a positional uncertainty in the lunar limb of typically 80 cm. Results are routinely communicated to the ephemerides offices. In about 140 events the fringe pattern due to diffraction by the lunar limb is sufficiently well defined to permit a determination of the slope near the point of occultation. A statistical discussion of these data is given. In all except a few cases, the slopes are numerically less than 15°, though 7 cases with slopes between 30° and 40° have been found. The relations between numbers of observations and contact angle, and between errors of slope determination and contact angle are discussed. The distribution of slope data with contact angle seems adequately explained. When slope data are collected by position angle consistently large and consistently small values show a tendency to group in a pattern suggesting a connection with observed large scale features on the lunar limb. The influence of lunar limb irregularities of a scale of a few meters on observed diffraction patterns and inferred timings is discussed. Multichannel observations should be of value in removing ambiguities. The use of occultation observations for the discovery of multiple stars and for the measurement of angular diameters of stars is mentioned. Future developments proposed for the project are considered.     Description: ABSTRACT Cores of coastal drumlins in Connemara contain stratified diamictons that interdigitate with gravelly clinoforms and finer grained rhythmites. The diamictons are interpreted as subaqueous mud apron deposits delivered by subglacial till advection to continuously failing subaqueous ice-contact fans, whose strata were being syn-depositionally over-steepened by glacitectonic deformation. The localized nature of the stratified sediments reflects the emergence of subglacial deforming tills and meltwater deposits in a glacilacustrine environment to produce interdigitated mass flow diamictons and grounding line fans/wedges. These depo-centres became glacitectonized and subglacially streamlined during glacier overriding and hence regional drumlin sedimentology reflects the varying degrees of inheritance of pre-existing glacigenic deposits and suggests that drumlin production relates more to the position of localized sediment accumulations at the glacier bed than full-depth till deformation processes (e.g. instability mechanisms) within the same drumlin field. Till cored drumlins give way down ice to stratified cored drumlins with till caps and then to stratified drumlins. This zonation is compatible with the increased lateral variability in drumlin composition that would arise from the occurrence of linear assemblages of glacifluvial (esker) and subaqueous (grounding line) sediments in an otherwise marginal-thickening till sheet.
