Notes: Summary Annual rings of 140–160-year-old beeches (Fagus sylvatica) from St. Ingbert, Saarland (FRG) were prepared and analyzed for 14 metals by atomic absorption spectroscopy. According to the chronological variations of their concentrations, the elements could be divided into three groups: 1) Metals without any tendency for chronological changes. This was established for Na, K, Cu, Cr, Co, Ni, Pb, and Cd. 2) Metals with a recent decrease of their concentrations, appropriate for Ca, Mg, Mn, and Zn. 3) Metals with a recent tendency to increase, e.g. Fe and Al. These variations are discussed in connection with the industrial history of the Saarland region and the influence of acid immissions which may alter the soil and thereby the trace element metabolism of the trees with consequences for the vitality of the plants.

Notes: Abstract The Common Vole (Microtus agrestis) and the Redbacked Vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) can cause severe damages in forest plantations. Different application techniques of rodenticides to control these harmful rodents were tested by several institutions of plant protection in the Federal Republic of Germany. The following registered baits were used: A bluestained pectin-wax pellet containing 0.0075% Chlorphacinon (Lepit®-Forstpellet), small flour-plates (Arrex®-M-Köder klein) and sunflower kernels coated with plastique-foil (Arrex®-E-Köder) both incorporated with 2% resp. 3.75% zinc-phosphide. In 1985 disperse spraying versus concentrated offering of the baits in 12 earthenware pipes/ha was tested. The density of mice and voles could be reduced nearly to the same level with both methods. However, the amount of baits needed was much less when bait stations were used. In 1986 a new and save type of bait station (Theyson-Köder-station) was tested, from which non-target animals cannot get baits. The acceptance of the bait station could be improved by aromatic compounds from apples. According to the obtained first results forest plantations can be protected during the whole wintertime against vole-damages by means of bait stations.

Notes: Abstract Three domestic cat populations from Yugoslavia (Bitola, Ohrid, Struga) were surveyed at six colour loci (orange, non agouti, tabby, dilute, piebald spotting, dominant white) and one coat length locus (long hair, allele l). Statistically significant differences were obtained in frequencies of alleles: O, a, l and W. Human preferences and cultural contacts with other countries especially Turkey are discussed in the paper. Genetic distance analysis did not show that Macedonian populations are more similar to Turkish or Greek ones than populations from Dalmatia, where Turkish influence was absent, although there are similarities between Macedonian and Turkish populations as far as the O allele is concerned. There was a statistically significant correlation between the duration of Turkish rule in the middle and eastern part of the Mediterranean and O and l alleles frequencies.
