    Description: Swiftia phaeton, a new species, is described for Mauritania where it is endemic at the upper bathyal. This azooxanthellate octocoral is distinctive from congeneric species in the NE Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea by the dark red coloration of the colonies and polyps, the presence of a layer of rod sclerites on top of the calyces and different sizes of polyps and sclerites. Coral gardens dominated by a species of the genus Swiftia Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864 were filmed for the first time it the southern NE Atlantic Ocean. The extensive Swiftia phaeton sp. nov. dominated habitats were recorded during the Phaeton expedition onboard Maria S. Merian in 2010 at the Mauritanian Slope between 20°24N and 17°54N in 470 - 640 m depth, co-occurring with the framework-forming scleractinians Lophelia pertusa (Linnaeus, 1758) and Madrepora oculata (Linnaeus, 1758). ROV video annotation based on size and density distribution of Swiftia enabled the characterization of the new biotope.

    Description: Stable oxygen and carbon isotopes were measured on (i) the planktic foraminifera species Globigerinoides ruber (white) and alternatively, in samples in which G. ruber was lacking, on Globigerinoides conglobatus; and (ii) the benthic foraminifera species Cibicidoides pachyderma and alternatively, in samples in which C. pachyderma was lacking, on Cibicides lobatulus. 10–15 planktic and 4-6 benthic specimens of the fraction 〉250 μm were selected. Additionally, attention was paid to select specimens of similar size to minimise influences of metabolic effects and changing preferential habitats during ontogeny. For cleaning and removal of sediment, the selected foraminifera were cracked between two glass plates, transferred to a sample cup, covered with ethanol and immerged into an ultrasonic bath for 5–10 s. The sediment brought into suspension was decanted. The procedure was repeated until the ethanol remained clear after the ultrasonic bath. The cleaned foraminifera were reacted with 100% phosphoric acidat 75 °C using a Kiel III online carbonate preparation line connected to a ThermoFinnigan 252 mass spectrometer (Geochemical Laboratory of the GeoZentrum Nordbayern,Germany). Isotopic data are expressed in per mil relative to V-PDB by assigning a δ18O-value of -2.20 ‰ to NBS19, using the standard δ-notation. The reproducibility was checked by replicate analysis of laboratory standards and was found to be better than ±0.05 for δ18O and δ13C (1σ).

    Description: High-resolution proxy records are needed to evaluate models simulating past, present and future climatic conditions. Before such records can be reliably employed, calibration studies have to be conducted to assess the confidence intervals of the proxies. Here, we use shells of the fast growing Pacific oyster Magallana gigas from the Central Wadden Sea, North Sea, a temperate barrier island-backbarrier tidal flat-salt marsh system with large seasonal changes of water mass-properties, for the calibration of geochemical proxies. M. gigas represents a nonnative invasive species that rapidly develops oyster reefs. Calcite shells of two specimens from the intertidal and subtidal zones were sampled in high resolution yielding sub-monthly data sets. The time period represented in the shell, based on δ18O age modeling, was estimated at 8–10 years and the growth of the shells was restricted from (late) spring to (early) autumn of each year. Mg/Ca, Mn/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios of the intertidal and subtidal specimens show similar seasonal patterns. Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios are investigated as high-resolution sea surface temperature (SST) proxies. Important ontogenetic effects (i.e., increasing time-averaging with increasing age) as well as inter-specimen variability are discussed as limiting factors for the proxy development. Intertidal Mg/Ca ratios show only a significant correlation to the high-resolution SST record of the Central Wadden Sea when the early ontogenetic stage is considered. Sr/Ca ratios were comparable in terms of absolute values and amplitudes to those of M. gigas in the Northern Wadden Sea, but amplitudes were decreasing with increasing age. These findings seriously hamper the application of Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca for reliable palaeotemperature reconstructions regardless of ontogenetic stage. The Mn/Ca ratios were investigated as proxy for Mn cycling in tidal basins, where it is interrelated with seasonal changes in primary production. In addition to the generally observed seasonal variability of the Mn/Ca oyster records, the subtidal Mn/Ca is significantly elevated compared to intertidal Mn/Ca. The subtidal Mn/Ca offset likely reflects differences in Mn cycling in tidal settings and could, therefore, serve in the palaeorecord as indicator to differentiate inter- and subtidal habitats in the same embedding sedimentary facies. This habitat effect has to be considered as an important factor besides environmental change when interpreting the high-resolution proxy record of fossil oysters.

    Description: We used carbon and nitrogen stable isotope (δ13C and δ15N) analyses to investigate the trophic network of the CWC reef habitat off Angola (SE Atlantic Ocean). Samples were collected in January 2016 during the M122 (“ANNA”) expedition on board R/V Meteor. In total, 18 reef sites, including seven CWC mound settings over a bathymetric range of 250 to 530 m water depth, were sampled for stable isotope analyses. Samples of organisms belonging to the taxa Porifera, Cnidaria, Arthropoda, Annelida, Echinodermata and Chordata were collected by means of a box corer, a Van-Veen grab sampler and the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) SQUID (MARUM, Bremen, Germany). To investigate potential food sources of the benthic megafauna, three types of Particulate Organic Matter (POM) were collected: Suspended Particulate Organic Matter (SPOM) was collected with a McLane phytoplankton pump; settling SPOM was collected with a sediment trap (SPOM trap) and sediment samples were collected with a box corer and a grab sampler. Analyses of benthic megafauna were performed using a Elementar IsoPrime 100 isotope ratio–mass spectrometry (IR–MS) (IsoPrime Ltd.) coupled to a CNS elemental analyzer (Elementar Vario Pyro Cube EA CNS; Elementar Analysensysteme GmbH), while POM samples were analyzed by a Delta V Advantage IR–MS coupled online to an elemental analyzer (Flash 2000 EA-IRMS) by a ConFlo IV (Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc.). Vienna Pee Dee belemnite (V.P.D.B.) for carbon, and atmospheric N2 (Air) for nitrogen, were used as reference materials, and stable isotope values are reported in respect to that.
