    Description: Condensed pelagic deposits characterize the uppermost sediment sequence of the Maud Rise in the eastern Weddell Sea. The comparison of subbottom profiling data with the sediments drilled at two ODP sites shows that Lithologic Unit Ib deposited during late Miocene to late Pliocene times is generally characterized by acoustic transparency. A prominent reflector with strongly increased amplitude (called Reflector “Pc”) occurs within this mainly homogeneous diatom ooze unit and is correlated with the porcellanite horizon found at ODP Site 689. As evidenced by sediment findings, Reflector “Pc” marks a distinct stratigraphic layer of early Pliocene age. The development of the Reflector “Pc” and its amplitude of reflection in the echosounding records is most likely caused by the silica cementation of porcellanite within this layer. The analyses of the sediment echosounder profiles from five R.V. Polarstern cruises make it possible to map the regional distribution of Reflector “Pc”. In large areas of the central Maud Rise, a patchy but also continuous distribution of Reflector “Pc” was found. The reflector does not occur in sediments below 3000 meters of water. On average Reflector “Pc” is detected around 11 and 12 meters below seafloor, but depth occurrence is highly variable within the range of 8 m to more than 18 m. The apparent amplitude of Reflector “Pc” is higher in those areas where the diatom ooze Unit Ib reaches greater thicknesses, which may be caused by local enhanced tectonic subsidence. In general a good correlation of Reflector “Pc” amplitude and thickness of lithologic Unit Ib is observed. This may imply that the diatom ooze Unit Ib serves as a silica source, since the extent of silica cementation of the porcellanite layer is controlled by the amount of dissolved silica supply. Other possible interpretations for silica sources include silica-rich interstitial water ascending from deeper sediment levels using tectonic structures for migration.

    Description: Silicic calderas are volcanic systems whose unrest evolution is more unpredictable than other volcano types because they often do not culminate in an eruption. Their complex structure strongly influences the post-collapse volcano-tectonic evolution, usually coupling volcanism and ground deformation. Among such volcanoes, the Campi Flegrei caldera (southern Italy) is one of the most studied. Significant long- and short-term ground deformations characterize this restless volcano. Several studies performed on the marinecontinental succession exposed in the central sector of the Campi Flegrei caldera provided a reconstruction of ground deformation during the last 15 kyr. However, considering that over one-third of the caldera is presently submerged beneath the Pozzuoli Gulf, a comprehensive stratigraphic on-land-offshore framework is still lacking. This study aims at reconstructing the offshore succession through analysis of high-resolution single and multichannel reflection seismic profiles and correlates the resulting seismic stratigraphic framework with the stratigraphy reconstructed on-land. Results provide new clues on the causative relations between the intra-caldera marine and volcaniclastic sedimentation and the alternating phases of marine transgressions and regressions originated by the interplay between ground deformation and sea-level rise. The volcano-tectonic reconstruction, provided in this work, connects the major caldera floor movements to the large Plinian eruptions of Pomici Principali (12 ka) and Agnano Monte Spina (4.55 ka), with the onset of the first post-caldera doming at ~10.5 ka. We emphasize that ground deformation is usually coupled with volcanic activity, which shows a self-similar pattern, regardless of its scale. Thus, characterizing the long-term deformation history becomes of particular interest and relevance for hazard assessment and definition of future unrest scenarios.

    Description: Oligocene to Quaternary sediments were recovered from the Antarctic continental margin in the eastern Weddell Sea during ODP Leg 113 and Polarstern expedition ANT-VI. Clay mineral composition and grain size distribution patterns are useful for distinguishing sediments that have been transported by ocean currents from those that were ice-rafted. This, in turn, has assisted in providing insights about the changing late Paleogene to Neogene sedimentary environment as the cryosphere developed in Antarctica. During the middle Oligocene, increasing glacial conditions on the continent are indicated by the presence of glauconite sands, that are interpreted to have formed on the shelf and then transported down the continental slope by advancing glaciers or as a result of sea-level lowering. The dominance of illite and a relatively high content of chlorite suggest predominantly physical weathering conditions on the continent. The high content of biogenic opal from the late Miocene to the late Pliocene resulted from increased upwelling processes at the continental margin due to increased wind strength related to global cooling. Partial melting of the ice-sheet occurred during an early Pliocene climate optimum as is shown by an increasing supply of predominantly current-derived sediment with a low mean grain size and peak values of smectite. Primary productivity decreased at ~ 3 Ma due to the development of a permanent sea-ice cover close to the continent. Late Pleistocene sediments are characterized by planktonic foraminifers and biogenic opal, concentrated in distinct horizons reflecting climatic cycles. Isotopic analysis of AT. pachyderma produced a stratigraphy which resulted in a calculated sedimentation rate of 1 cm/k.y. during the Pleistocene. Primary productivity was highest during the last three interglacial maxima and decreased during glacial episodes as a result of increasing sea-ice coverage.

    Description: This contribution summarizes the biostratigraphy of planktonic foraminifers, calcareous nannofossils, and benthic foraminifers, in combination with the magnetostratigraphy, carbon and oxygen isotope stratigraphy of benthic foraminifers, and CaCO3 stratigraphy for the Maestrichtian through Paleogene calcareous sequences recovered at Sites 689 and 690 on Maud Rise (at about 65°S, eastern Weddell Sea, Antarctica). These data represent the southernmost calciumcarbonate record available for that interval, and thus extend the biostratigraphic and isotopic database to higher latitudes. Sites 689 and 690 form the southernmost anchor of a north-south transect through the Atlantic Ocean for Paleogene biostratigraphy and chemostratigraphy.
