Notes: Abstract Let Λ be a lattice inR n . Consider the systemS of unit spheres centered at the lattice points of Λ.S is called ak-fold lattice packing (covering) if each point inR n lies in at most (least)k of the open (closed) spheres ofS. Letd k n (D k n ) be the density of the closest (thinnest)k-fold lattice packing (covering) ofR n . After dealing several cases left by G. Fejes Tóth and A. Florian, we have concluded thatd k n 〉kd 1 n for all (n, k) (n≥2,k≥2) except (2, 2), (2, 3), (2, 4); andD k 3 〈k D 1 3 for allk≥2.

Notes: Summary The survival response of human colorectal carcinoma cells treated in vitro for 1 h with PCNU was characterized by a threshold exponential curve, Dq = 8 μg/ml (1 h) and D 0 = 22 μg/ml (1 h). Continuous treatment induced decreasing degrees of cell kill although PCNU was biologically stable in solution for at least 24 h. Cells treated with PCNU were unable to recover from potentially lethal damage but were quite capable of repairing PCNU-induced sublethal damage. Thus, PCNU with different alkylating and carbamoylating than other nitrosourea congeners had similar cytotoxic and repair inhibition capacities. Any therapeutic gain in the clinical use of PCNU must derive only from its lipophilic properties and not from its superior activity at the cellular level.

Notes: Efforts to prepare triphenylsulfonium hexafluorophosphate by metathesis between commercially available “triphenylsulfonium chloride” and potassium hexafluorophosphate failed to yield the expected product but gave, instead, in approximately 50% yield, a crystalline substance with well-defined properties readily distinguishable from triphenylsulfonium hexafluorophosphate. The unexpected substance is identified as bis-[4(diphenylsulfonio)phenyl]sulfide-bis-hexafluorophosphate, for which no previous reference has been found in the literature. Its identification is based on elemental analysis, NMR, mass spectrometry, and infrared analysis. Bis-[4-(diphenylsulfonio)phenyl]sulfide-bis-hexafluorophosphate was also prepared by the reaction of benzene with sulfur monochloride in the presence of aluminum chloride and chlorine, followed by addition of potassium hexafluorophosphate. The product is an effective photonitiator for the crosslinking of epoxide resins.

Notes: The test results of 320 units of a laser initiated microdetonator are summarized. The commercially fabricated units used a lead styphnate/lead azide/HMX (1 mg/17.5 mg/13.5 mg) explosive train design contained in a miniature aluminum can that was capped with a glass-metal seal window. The test parameters were the laser energy, temperature, laser pulse duration, laser wavelength and nuclear radiation (5 × 106 rad of 1 MeV gamma rays). The performance parameters were the laser energy for ignition and the actuation response time.

Description: Satellite altimetry and tide gauges are the two main techniques used to measure sea level. Due to the limitations of satellite altimetry, a high-quality unified sea level model from coast to open ocean has traditionally been difficult to achieve. This study proposes a fusion approach of altimetry and tide gauge data based on a deep belief network (DBN) method. Taking the Mediterranean Sea as the case study area, a progressive three-step experiment was designed to compare the fused sea level anomalies from the DBN method with those from the inverse distance weighted (IDW) method, the kriging (KRG) method and the curvature continuous splines in tension (CCS) method for different cases. The results show that the fusion precision varies with the methods and the input measurements. The precision of the DBN method is better than that of the other three methods in most schemes and is reduced by approximately 20% when the limited altimetry along-track data and in-situ tide gauge data are used. In addition, the distribution of satellite altimetry data and tide gauge data has a large effect on the other three methods but less impact on the DBN model. Furthermore, the sea level anomalies in the Mediterranean Sea with a spatial resolution of 0.25° × 0.25° generated by the DBN model contain more spatial distribution information than others, which means the DBN can be applied as a more feasible and robust way to fuse these two kinds of sea levels.
