Description: 〈title xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"〉Abstract〈/title〉〈p xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xml:lang="en"〉The ultimate demise of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) and the preceding and succeeding oceanographic changes along the western Labrador Sea offer insights critically important to improve climate predictions of expected future climate warming and further melting of the Greenland ice cap. However, while the final disappearance of the LIS during the Holocene is rather well constrained, the response of sea ice during the resulting meltwater events is not fully understood. Here, we present reconstructions of paleoceanographic changes over the past 9.3 Kyr BP on the northwestern Labrador Shelf, with a special focus on the interaction between the final meltwater event around 8.2 Kyr BP and sea ice and phytoplankton productivity (e.g., IP〈sub〉25〈/sub〉, HBI III (Z), brassicasterol, dinosterol, biogenic opal, total organic carbon). Our records indicate low sea‐ice cover and high phytoplankton productivity on the Labrador Shelf prior to 8.9 Kyr BP, sea‐ice formation was favored by decreased surface salinities due to the meltwater events from Lake Agassiz‐Ojibway and the Hudson Bay Ice Saddle from 8.55 Kyr BP onwards. For the past ca. 7.5 Kyr BP sea ice is mainly transported to the study area by local ocean currents such as the inner Labrador and Baffin Current. Our findings provide new insights into the response of sea ice to increased meltwater discharge as well as shifts in atmospheric and oceanic circulation.〈/p〉

Description: The dataset contains measurements of organic biomarkers and sterols, dinoflagellate cyst census counts, and benthic and planktonic stable oxygen isotope data from core GS16-204-22CC-B on the Eirik Drift (58°02.83′N, 47°02.36′W; 3160 m water depth) for Marine Isotope Stage 6, 5e and 5d. Total Organic Carbon (TOC), the Highly Branched Isoprenoids (HBIs) IP25, HBI II, HBI III (Z), and HBI III (E), and the sterols brassicasterol, dinosterol, campesterol and sitosterol were measured in the organic geochemistry lab at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Bremerhaven, Germany. Biomarker values are presented as biomarker/g dry sediment and biomarker/g TOC. Dinoflagellate cysts were counted along non overlapping traverses at x40 magnification using a transmitted light microscope and classified to species level as much as possible. The dataset consists of raw counts, relative abundances and dinocyst concentrations (cysts/g dry sediment). Stable oxygen isotopes (δ18O) were measured on the planktic foraminifera Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sinistral) and benthic foraminifera Cibicidoides wuellestorfi. Values are reported relative to Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite. The measurements were carried out at FARLAB, University of Bergen, Norway. The age model for core GS16-204-22CC-B was obtained by correlation of benthic and planktic δ18O measured in this core with previously published isotope records in Irvali et al. (2012; 2016) and a 14C age from Griem et al. (2019).

Description: Multibeam data were collected during RV Polarstern cruise PS115/2 (2018-09-05 to 2018-10-16). Multibeam sonar system was Atlas Hydrographic Hydrosweep DS 3 multibeam echo sounder. Data are processed with Caris HIPS, including sound velocity correction with SV data from SVPs and World Ocean Atlas 13 (https://doi.org/10.7289/v5f769gt), tidal correction with TPXO9_atlas_v5 (https://www.tpxo.net/global/tpxo9-atlas), and manual cleaning. The soundings are combined in daily files, the format is XYZ ASCII (〈Lon〉 〈Lat〉 〈Depth in meters, positive up, relative to mean sea level〉). Additional blockmedian grids have been computed with depth dependent cell size to visualize the data. These grids are not meant for scientific analysis or navigation, but for overview purposes only.
