Description: We produced orbital-scale resolution geochemical records for International Ocean Discovery Program Site U1443 cored with the RV JOIDES Resolution during IODP Expedition 353 in December 2014 in the southern Bay of Bengal. The Sr, Nd, and Pb isotope compositions of the detrital clay fractions were measured using MC-ICP-MS and span across five key climatic intervals of the middle to late Miocene (15.8 – 9.5 Million years ago). Our new radiogenic isotope time series of clays transported to the Ninetyeast Ridge allow us to distinguish tectonic and climatic forcing of monsoon intensity, weathering regime and erosion intensity of the watersheds feeding into the Bay of Bengal.

Description: X-ray fluorescence (XRF) core scanning of marine and lake sediments has been extensively used to study changes in past environmental and climatic processes over a range of timescales. The interpretation of XRF-derived element ratios in paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic studies primarily considers differences in the relative abundances of particular elements. Here we present new XRF core scanning data from two long sediment cores in the Andaman Sea in the northern Indian Ocean and show that sea level related processes influence terrigenous inputs based proxies such as Ti/Ca, Fe/Ca, and elemental concentrations of the transition metals (e.g. Mn). Zr/Rb ratios are mainly a function of changes in median grain size of lithogenic particles and often covary with changes in Ca concentrations that reflect changes in biogenic calcium carbonate production. This suggests that a common process (i.e. sea level) influences both records. The interpretation of lighter element data (e.g. Si and Al) based on low XRF counts is complicated as variations in mean grain size and water content result in systematic artifacts and signal intensities not related to the Al or Si content of the sediments. This highlights the need for calibration of XRF core scanning data based on discrete sample analyses and careful examination of sediment properties such as porosity/water content for reliably disentangling environmental signals from other physical properties. In the case of the Andaman Sea, reliable extraction of a monsoon signal will require accounting for the sea level influence on the XRF data.

Description: The here presented sample set is from three cores from the Guaymas Basin (Gulf of California), covering a broad range of depositional environments. This includes sediments from the oxygen minimum zone, from a semi-restricted oxic graben, and from near a hydrothermal vent field. Cores were taken with a multiple corer.

Description: To better understand the inputs of riverine REEs and Hf to the ocean and their impact on the open ocean we collected filtered seawater samples from 16 full water column profiles along the Congo River plume at the coast of Congo and Gabon and along an offshore section at 3°S, complemented by three freshwater samples collected directly from the Congo River. The water samples from the Congo River plume were collected during GEOTRACES cruise GA08 with German RV Meteor (M121) in November and December 2015 with a stainless steel CTD rosette and a towed fish for surface waters. River water end-member samples from the Congo River at zero salinity were taken upstream by boat in May, July and October 2017 near the center of the river at ~6°S and ~12.5°E (stations 12.1–12.3). We determine for the first time REE and Hf concentrations and isotope compositions within the Congo River plume and quantify Nd and Hf fluxes. Based on these data we evaluate how far the Congo River plume is traceable by these geochemical parameters, how it contributes to their budgets in the South East Atlantic Ocean, and to which degree the Nd and Hf isotope and REE distributions can be used as water mass tracers in areas of high continental inputs.
