    Description: In this paper we describe evidence of strong tectonic deformation affecting two aqueducts of Roman age (II–III century A.D.). The channels are located approximately 20 km northeast of Rome along the ancient Via Tiburtina. Brittle and ductile deformation affects these two structures, including extensional joint systems, NE-oriented faults, and horizontal distortion. This deformation is consistent with rightlateral movement on major N-striking faults, and represents the first evidence that tectonic deformation took place in historical times in the vicinity of Rome, with local strike–slip movement superimposed on a regional extensional fault system.

    Description: Strong electrical signals that correspond to the Mw = 9.3 earthquake of 26 December 2004, which occurred at 0058:50.7 UTC off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia, were recorded by an electrostatic sensor (a device that detects short-term variations in Earth’s electrostatic fi eld) at a seismic station in Italy, which had been installed to study the infl uence of local earthquakes on a new landslide monitoring system. Electrical signals arrived at the station practically instantaneously and were detected up to several hours before the onset of the Sumatra earthquake (Figure 1) as well as before local quakes. The corresponding seismic signals (p-waves) arrived 740 seconds after the start of the earthquake. Because the electrical signals travel at the speed of light, electrical monitoring for the global detection of very strong earthquakes could be an important tool in signifi cantly increasing the hazard alert window.

    Description: The ML 5.4 Molise earthquake of 31 October 2002 caused damage of Mercalli-Cancani-Sieberg (MCS) intensity VIII–IX to the small town of San Giuliano di Puglia. In contrast, the other towns in the epicentral area did not exceed MCS intensity VII. Building vulnerability and near-surface geology were suspected to be potentially responsible for the high level of damage. However, early results of engineering studies in San Giuliano di Puglia (Dolce et al., 2004) indicate that vulnerability of the strongest damage [European Macroseismic Scale, (EMS) intensity VII– VIII] zone was not higher than vulnerability of the remaining part of the town (EMS intensity VI). We use the aftershock recordings in the town to investigate the local amplification effect due to the lateral variations of near-surface geology. The waveform analysis shows that in the high-damage zone, where clay deposits outcrop, direct S waves are characterized by a large initial pulse that is a factor of 6 larger than S waves recorded on a nearby rock outcrop, a few hundred meters away. Moreover, the strong S pulse is followed by a 10-sec long amplification of ground motion between 4 and 7 Hz. This frequency band corresponds to the fundamental resonance frequencies of two- and three-storied buildings, which are the most common type of construction in San Giuliano di Puglia. Since the duration of the strongest shaking is estimated to have been longer than 10 sec during the main shock, we conclude that the highly damaging effect in the clayey zone could have been due to the combination of the large initial pulse with time-persistent amplification at the resonant frequencies of buildings.

    Description: www.earth-prints.org aims to satisfy the increasing demand of fast, up-to-date, easy-accessible, and free-of-charge sources of information in all branches of Geosciences. It allows earth scientists to deposit electronic documents into its collections and to index them by subjects and keywords. Earth-prints provides a time-stamp to all deposited materials to insure precedence rights to original ideas and scientific results. It deals with copyright issues through Creative Common standards that offer a wide variety of licenses. All deposited material is made immediately available to the public. Subscribers will be sent a daily newsletter according to the topics they have signed in. The archive has a three-level hierarchical structure. The top level includes Atmosphere, Cryosphere, Hydrosphere, Solid Earth, and General. It then branches into several disciplines within the other two levels. Different collections take in different kinds of material, such as pre-prints, oral presentations, extended abstracts, published papers, conference papers, books and book chapters, posters, and Web products and databases. Earth-Prints main language is English but it accepts documents in other languages also, giving visibility to data and studies at local scale that are indeed of general interests. An abstract in English is always required. We will present a virtual tour into the many features of Earth-prints to provide all its potential users with an easy acquaintance of the system and make them explore its capabilities. Although the archive is based on latest information technology it requires no specific knowledge to be used because it manages all procedures for access, navigation, upload of documents and information retrieval through a user-friendly interface. What is the limit of open archive development? We think that the one and only limit of open archives is the eagerness of its users to share information and knowledge.

    Description: A correlation has been recently found between large earthquakes and the succeeding largest 9 explosive eruptions of the last century, which has been interpreted as a product of co- and post-seismic stress diffusion. Here, we check the statistical significance of the proposed coupling by using a larger dataset, and investigate the reliability of the causality hypothesis. We find that the volcanoes with VEI ≥ 4 eruptions underwent, in the few decades before the volcanic event, higher seismic stress perturbations due to large earthquakes compared to other volcanic areas. The correlation is statistically significant and it is not explained by a spatio-temporal clustering of eruptions and earthquakes due to tectonic pulses. This implies that the large earthquakes indeed triggered the eruptions.

    Description: e present a method for the inversion of complete waveforms in the 5-30 mHz frequency band for moment tensor determination. The method is based on the calibration of phase and group velocity dispersion curves for Rayleigh and Love fundamental modes to account for heterogeneous lithospheric structure, and is applied to the analysis of single station records of the VSL MEDNET station for the 1990 NW Iran earthquake sequence (the events of June 20, 21 and 24). The revised seismic moment of the June 20, 1990 Iranian earthquake is Mo = 1.56 x 1027 dyne-cm, corresponding to Mw = 7.4. The method proves to be a very robust tool for the analysis of moderate and large earthquakes at regional distances, producing consistent moment tensor solutions trom single station inversions in narrow (2-4 mHz) and wide (up to 20 mHz) frequency bands across the whole band of interest.

    Description: The strong motion accelerograms recorded during the 1990 Eastern Sicily earthquake have been analyzed to investigate source and attenuation parameters. Peak ground motions (peak acceleration, velocity and displacement) overestimate the values predicted by the empirical scaling law proposed for other Italian earthquakes, suggesting that local site response and propagation path effects play an important role in interpreting the observed time histories. The local magnitude, computed from the strong motion accelerograms by synthesizing the Wood-Anderson response, is ML = 5.9, that is sensibly larger than the local magnitude estimated at regional distances from broad-band seismograms (ML = 5.4). The standard omega-square source spectral model seems to be inadequate to describe the observed spectra over the entire frequency band from 0.2 to 20 Hz. The seismic moment estimated from the strong motion accelerogram recorded at the closest rock site (Sortino) is Mo = 0.8 x 1024 dyne.cm, that is roughly 4.5 times lower than the value estimated at regional distances (Mo = 3.7 x 1024 dyne.cm) from broad-band seismograms. The corner frequency estimated from the accelera- tion spectra i.5 J; = 1.3 Hz, that is close to the inverse of the dUl.ation of displacement pulses at the two closest recording sites. This value of corner tì.equency and the two values of seismic moment yield a Brune stress drop larger than 500 bars. However, a corner frequency value off; = 0.6 Hz and the seismic moment resulting from regional data allows the acceleration spectra to be reproduced on the entire available frequency band yielding to a Brune stress drop of 210 bars. The ambiguity on the corner frequency value associated to this earthquake is due to the limited frequency bandwidth available on the strong motion recordil1gs. Assuming the seismic moment estimated at regional distances from broad-band data, the moment magnitude for this earthquake is 5.7. The higher local magnitude (5.9) compared with the moment magnitude (5.7) is due to the weak regional attenuation. Beside this, site amplifications due to surface geology have produced the highest peak ground motions among those observed at the strong motion sites.

    Description: MEDNET is a network of very-broadband, high resolution seismographic stations primarily installed in countries of the Mediterranean area. Support for stations in developing countries comes from World Laboratory (Lausanne), a non-governmental international organisation. The project started in 1989 and now lists 15 active stations. It kept a special emphasis on the Mediterranean area, as its main target area, but also included stations in Nepal and Antarctica by following other Italian national initiatives. Three stations are in cooperation with University of Trieste (TTE), GEOSCOPE (SSB), and IRIS/GSN (TBT). Stations in Antarctica are installed and maintained in the framework of the Italian Antarctic Program (PNRA).

    Description: The effects of earthquakes that occurred in a given area contribute significantly to the evaluation of to local seismic hazard. The information concerning historical earthquakes of the Mediterranean area covers many centuries, but the wealth of information made available by historical seismology does not appear to ha taken into account by engineering seismologists. By adopting "attenuation laws" based on data contained in the seismic catalogues, not only do we sometimes come up against the gross errors normally found jn logues, but we also lose sight of important details relating to the characteristics of urban seismic scenarios this paper we describe the results obtained from the analysis of seismic scenarios in Ortigia (old Syracuse this analysis we emphasized the qualitative and descriptive data to outline the "largest historical eve reassessed the data concerning five earthquakes that occuned in 1169,1542,1693,1757 and 1846, w reported by the Catalogue of Italian Earthquakes with an intensity greater than or equal to IX MCS epicentre of which was located within 50 km of the city. The last two of these earthquakes turned out t result of mistakes in the transmission of the news and have therefore been removed trom the list of de events. In addjtjon, we reconstructed the damage caused by the 1542 and 1693 earthquakes on a ma ancient town of Ortigia, taking into account the economic, demographic, and urbanistic conditions of t The empirical elements supplied to evaluate the local seismic response can also be of use in the preservation of historical buildings.
