Notizen: Successful crossing experiments between tetraploid individuals of Achillea ceretanica, A. collina, A. distans ssp. styriaca, and A. pratensis (A. millefolium complex, Compositae) were carried out. Sesquiterpenes of 1013 hybrid plants obtained from 13 crossings were studied by qualitative thin layer chromatography (TLC). F1-progenies from parent plants with guaianolides (GU-type), as well as the offspring of a back-cross, uniformly contained proazulenes. Diallel crosses between plants exclusively with eudesmanolides (EU-type) resulted in a 7:1 segregation-ratio of EU- and GU-plants. Two reciprocal crossing experiments between EU- and GU-parents resulted in 28.6% and 89.3% EU-individuals, as well as GU-offspring. According to these findings, the qualitative marker ‘proazulene’ (GU-type) is thought to be a recessive character of the tetraploid Achillea species studied.

Notizen: The ground-state potential energy surface (PES) for linear arrangements of the N2H+ molecular ion is numerically computed by the multireference single- and double-excitation configuration interaction (MRD-CI) technique. An analytical representation of the potential energy function is obtained by fitting a power series in the Simons–Parr–Finlan coordinates to the numerical data. For investigating the intramolecular dynamics we describe the nuclear motion by a Gaussian wave packet located initially in the strong interaction region of the PES. The vibrational eigenvalue spectrum is calculated by Fourier transforming the time autocorrelation function. The spectrum is then analyzed statistically in the light of random matrix theory (RMT) to understand the nature of the intramolecular dynamics. We examine the short-range correlation in the spectrum through the nearest neighbor level spacing distribution P(s) and the long-range correlation through Δ3 and Σ2 statistics. The spectrum in the time domain is analyzed by computing the ensemble averaged survival probability 〈〈P(t)〉〉. The above four quantities obtained from the spectrum are compared with the distribution predicted for regular, irregular, and mixed (intermediate) spectra by the RMT. We find the system is of mixed type and the fractional irregularity is 0.7±0.05. In order to reveal a possible correspondence to the classical dynamics, we have carried out the spectral analysis of the dynamical variables for classical trajectories over a wide range of internal energies. In addition the classical dynamics of proton collisions with N2 molecules has also been preliminarily studied on the same PES, in particular the dependence of the final vibrational action nf on the initial vibrational phase φi of N2 and, furthermore, the Poincaré surface-of-section superimposed with the zero-order separatrix; we find a large number of trapped trajectories. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract An increased abdominal fat mass is regarded as an independent cardiovascular risk factor. In this cross-sectional study of 1099 men we found a significant positive association between alcohol intake and the waist/hip (W/H) ratio, an index for the abdominal fat mass. This relationship was independent of age and body weight. The results suggest that the risk of abdominal fat deposition could be minimized by a reduction of alcohol intake.

Notizen: QT and JT Dispersion in Long QT Syndrome. Introduction: Abnormalities of ventricular repolarization leading to ventricular arrhythmias place children with long QT syndrome at high risk for sudden death. Dispersion of the QT (QTd) and JT (JTd) intervals, as markers of cardiac electrical heterogeneity, may be helpful in evaluating children with long QT syndrome and identifying a subset of patients at high risk for development of critical ventricular arrhythmias (ventricular tachycardia, torsades de pointes, and/or cardiac arrest). Methods and Results: The QTd and JTd intervals in 39 children with long QT syndrome were compared to those of 50 normal age-matched children. In the long QT syndrome group, QTd measured 81 ± 70 msec compared to 28 ± 14 msec in the control group (P 〈 0.05), and JTd in the long QT syndrome group was 80 ± 69 msec compared to 25 ± 15 msec in the control group (P 〈 0.05).Conclusion: Children with long QT syndrome have an increased QTd and JTd when compared to normal controls. A QTd or JTd ≥ 55 msec correlates with the presence of critical ventricular arrhythmias. These ECG measures of dispersion can be useful in stratifying children with the long QT syndrome who are at higher risk for developing critical ventricular arrhythmias.

Notizen: Abstract  Angiotensin II is involved in blood pressure regulation, cell growth and angioneogenesis. The angiotensin receptors which mediate the intracellular effects of angiotensin II are expressed in numerous tissues and cell types. We studied the expression of angiotensin II receptors in cultured human skin fibroblasts derived from a skin biopsy. Angiotensin II binding characteristics were analyzed by radioligand binding assays. The DNA synthesis was assessed by [H]thymidine incorporation assays. Intracellular calcium concentrations were measured by fura-2 spectrofluorometry, and mRNA expression levels were analyzed by northern blot technology. Two distinct angiotensin receptors were detectable on human skin fibroblasts: the AT1 receptor with K d=1.0± 0.7 nmol/l and B max=17.9±0.9 fmol/mg protein, and an angiotensin(1–7) binding site with K d=26±6.6 nmol/l and B max=80.4±3.5 fmol/mg protein, as shown by competition binding assays using selective angiotensin II receptor antagonists and the heptapeptide angiotensin(1–7). The angiotensin AT1 receptor mRNA was substantially expressed in human skin fibroblasts and was subjected to homologous downregulation. In human skin fibroblasts angiotensin II caused a profound increase in intracellular calcium which was blocked by angiotensin AT1 receptor antagonists such as Exp-3174. Furthermore, both angiotensin II and angiotensin(1–7) led to increased DNA synthesis in human skin fibroblasts. In conclusion, cultured human skin fibroblasts express angiotensin AT1 receptors and a putatively new angiotensin receptor activated by angiotensin(1–7), both coupled to signaling pathways involved in DNA synthesis.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Abstract Anxiolysis with drugs and psychoprophylaxis are both recognised methods of preoperative preparation. The beneficial effects of anxiolytics, however, appear to be difficult to prove. In this study a comparison was made of heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), and norepinephrine, epinephrine, and cortisol levels. In group I 19 children recieved only psychological treatment, while in group II 21 children received 0.2 mg/kg midazolam orally. Measuring points were directly before medication, 30 min afterward, and at induction of anaesthesia. During the observation period the patients (5–10 years old) remained calm. At the beginning of the study the parameters of all patients were within a normal range; 30 min after premedication the HR and BP were significantly higher in group I than in group II. In contrast to group I, epinephrine levels in group II were lower at the beginning of anaesthesia than before premedication. In both groups, norepinephrine levels were the same at induction of anaesthesia as before premedication. Cortisol decreased only in patients who received midazolam. HR, BP, as well as humoral stress parameters indicate that midazolam in a dose of 0.2 mg/kg orally is sufficient to reduce preoperative stress in children.
