Abstract: The semiconductor tracker (SCT) is one of the tracking systems for charged particles in the ATLAS detector. It consists of 4088 silicon strip sensor modules. During Run 2 (2015–2018) the Large Hadron Collider delivered an integrated luminosity of 156 fb -1 to the ATLAS experiment at a centre-of-mass proton-proton collision energy of 13 TeV. The instantaneous luminosity and pile-up conditions were far in excess of those assumed in the original design of the SCT detector. Due to improvements to the data acquisition system, the SCT operated stably throughout Run 2. It was available for 99.9% of the integrated luminosity and achieved a data-quality efficiency of 99.85%. Detailed studies have been made of the leakage current in SCT modules and the evolution of the full depletion voltage, which are used to study the impact of radiation damage to the modules.

Abstract: Zinc finger and BTB domain-containing protein 4 (ZBTB4) belongs to the zinc finger protein family, which has a role in regulating epigenetic inheritance and is associated with cell differentiation and proliferation. Previous studies have identified aberrant ZBTB4 expression in cancer and its ability to modulate disease progression, but studies on the immune microenvironment, immunotherapy and its role in cancer are still lacking. Methods Human pan-cancer and normal tissue transcriptome data were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas. The pan-cancer genomic alteration landscape of ZBTB4 was investigated with the online tool. The Kaplan–Meier method was used to evaluate the prognostic significance of ZBTB4 in pancreatic cancer. In parallel, ZBTB4 interacting molecules and potential functions were analyzed by co-expression and the correlation between ZBTB4 and immune cell infiltration, immune modulatory cells and efficacy of immune checkpoint therapy was explored. Next, we retrieved the Gene Expression Omnibus database expression datasets of ZBTB4 and investigated ZBTB4 expression and clinical significance in pancreatic cancer by immunohistochemical staining experiments. Finally, cell experiments were performed to investigate changes in pancreatic cancer cell proliferation, migration and invasion following overexpression and knockdown of ZBTB4. Findings ZBTB4 showed loss of expression in the majority of tumors and possessed the ability to predict cancer prognosis. ZBTB4 was closely related to the tumor immune microenvironment, immune cell infiltration and immunotherapy efficacy. ZBTB4 had good diagnostic performance for pancreatic cancer in the clinic, and ZBTB4 protein expression was lost in pancreatic cancer tumor tissues. Cell experiments revealed that overexpression of ZBTB4 inhibited the proliferation, migration and invasion of pancreatic cancer cells, while silencing ZBTB4 showed the opposite effect. Conclusions According to our results, ZBTB4 is present in pancreatic cancer with aberrant expression and is associated with an altered immune microenvironment. We show that ZBTB4 is a promising marker for cancer immunotherapy and cancer prognosis and has the potential to influence pancreatic cancer progression.

Abstract: Traumatic injury or tumor resection can lead to eyelid defects, nasal defects, and cheek defects. The temporal flap pedicled with orbicularis oculi muscle (OOM) can be used to repair these defects. This cadaver-based anatomic study aimed to evaluate the blood supply of this flap and investigate its clinical implications. Methods: Twenty hemifaces from 10 cadavers were used in this study. The number of arteries supplying OOM of the flap, the diameter of the artery entering OOM, and the maximum width of OOM were recorded. All data were presented as mean±SD values and analyzed using Student t -test. A P value 〈 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Of these 10 specimens, 7 were males and 3 were females. The average age was 67.7 years (range, 53–78 y). The number of arteries supplying OOM was 8.5±1.4 in the male and 7.8±1.2 in the female. The diameter of the zygomatico-orbital artery was detected as 0.53±0.06 mm in the male and 0.40±0.11 mm in the female. The maximum width of OOM was detected as 2.5±0.1 cm in the male and 2.2±0.1 cm in the female. Males had significantly larger average values than females in the diameter of zygomatico-orbital artery and maximum width of OOM ( P =0.012, P 〈 0.001, respectively). However, the number of arteries supplying OOM did not differ significantly between sex ( P =0.322). Conclusions: We conclude that the blood supply of the temporal flap pedicled with OOM is abundant and reliable. The findings provide surgeons with valuable anatomic knowledge for repairing facial defects with this flap.

Abstract: The treatment of long-standing facial paralysis has always been a challenge for plastic surgery. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that the free functional gracilis transfer innervated by the cross-facial nerve graft (CFNG) is still an ideal option, even though there are many new surgical options available. Methods: A retrospective survey was made on 12 patients who received free functional gracilis transfer innervated by the CFNG. A modified version of the House-Brackmann scale was used to evaluate the movement of the corners of mouth after surgery. Patients were also asked about their satisfaction with the operation. In addition, an objective test was performed to assess the postoperative angle improvement by measuring the angle formed between the horizontal line of both corners of the lips and the vertical midline. Results: All grafts survived well. No severe complication occurred. Three patients received further surgical operations for aesthetic reasons. The movement of the corners of mouth was classified as excellent in 8 cases, good in three cases, and fair in one cases. The static angle and dynamic angle of postoperation improved and the range of dynamic angle improvement was larger than that of static angle. Conclusion: Free functional gracilis transfer innervated by the CFNG is an ideal technique for facial paralysis. It can effectively improve the facial dynamic of the affected side.

Abstract: The most commonly used experimental model for preclinical studies on peripheral nerve regeneration is the sciatic nerve injury model. However, no experimental study has been conducted to evaluate acute injury modes at the same time. Objective We conducted sciatic nerve transverse injury, clamp injury, keep epineurium and axon cutting injury, and chemical damage injury in rats to evaluate the degree of damage of the four different injury modes and the degree of self-repair after injury. Methods The sciatic nerve transverse injury model, clamp injury model, keep epineurium injury model, and chemical damage injury model were constructed. Then, the sciatic nerve function was assessed using clinical evaluation methods and electrophysiological examinations, as well as immunofluorescence and axonal counting assessments of the reconstructed nerve pathways. Results The evaluations showed that the transverse group had the lowest muscle action potential, sciatic functional index, nociceptive threshold, mechanical threshold, rate of wet gastrocnemius muscle weight, area of muscle fiber, and numbers of myelinated nerve fibers. The chemical group had the highest, while the clamp group and the keep epineurium group had medium. Conclusion Transverse injury models have the most stable effect among all damage models; chemical injury models self-recover quickly and damage incompletely with poor stability of effect; and clamp injury models and keep epineurium injury models have no significant differences in many ways with medium stability.

Abstract: Forecasting water deficit is challenging because it is modulated by uncertain climate, different environmental and anthropic factors, especially in arid and semi-arid northwestern China. The monthly water deficit index D at 44 sites in northwestern China over 1961−2020 were calculated. The key large-scale circulation indices related to D were screened using Pearson’s correlation (r). Subsequently, we predicted monthly D with the multi-variable linear regression (MLR) and random forest (RF) models at certain lagged times after being strictly calibrated and validated. The results showed the following: (1) The r between the monthly D and the screened key circulation indices varied from 0.71 to 0.85 and the lagged time ranged from 1 to 12 months. (2) The calibrated and validated performance of the established MLR and RF models were all good at the 44 sites. Overall, the RF model outperformed the MLR model with a higher coefficient of determination (R2 〉 0.8 at 38 sites) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE 〈 50% at 30 sites). (3) The Pacific Polar Vortex Intensity (PPVI) had the greatest impact on D in northwestern China, followed by SSRP, WPWPA, NANRP, and PPVA. (4) The forecasted monthly D values based on RF models indicated that the water deficit in northwestern China would be most severe (−239.7 to −62.3 mm) in August 2022. In conclusion, using multiple large-scale climate signals to drive a machine learning model is a promising method for predicting water deficit conditions in northwestern China.

Abstract: Introduction The aim of this study is to report our experience with modified staged buccal mucosa graft urethroplasty for the repair of proximal hypospadias in children and adolescents. Materials and Methods A total of 183 patients were treated at the Plastic Surgery Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College between 2010 and 2019. The patients were grouped according to age: (1) within 1.5-year-old group, (2) prepuberty group (Tanner stage 1), and (3) puberty group. Results In total, 153 patients were included in this study. Thirty-six patients had complications: seven after stage one; 29 after stage two; one patient had two complications. Maximum flow rates were 11.80 ± 1.46 mL/s in the 1.5-year-old group, 13.24 ± 2.61 mL/s in the prepuberty group, and 13.60 ± 2.20 mL/s in the puberty group (p = 0.199). Average flow rates were 6.86 ± 1.37, 7.94 ± 1.74, and 7.88 ± 1.22 mL/s, respectively (p = 0.203). The optimal hypospadias objective scoring evaluation score of 16 was seen in 117 patients (76%), the score of 15 in 23 patients (15%), 14 in 10 (7%), and 13 in 3 patients (2%). Patients with an uncomplicated treatment (no complication) had a higher clinical outcome than patients with a complication (15.8 ± 0.53 vs. 15.3 ± 0.97, with or without complication, p = 0.000). Multivariable analyses showed that previous treatment was closely related to the complication rate (p = 0.016). Conclusion The modified procedure allows for two-stage repair of proximal hypospadias with good results with a low complication rate and good functional results. Delaying operation did not increase complication rates in our research.

Abstract: Neurofibromatosis (NF) is an inherited disease and a benign tumor originating from nerve sheath cells. Neurofibromatosis type I (NF1) is the most common type, and most cases are characterized by neurofibromas. Neurofibromas in NF1 are mainly treated by surgery. Our study explores the risk factors for intraoperative hemorrhage in Type I neurofibromatosis patients who underwent neurofibroma resection. Methods A cross-sectional comparison of the patients who had undergone resection of neurofibroma for NF1. Data regarding patient characteristics and data about operative outcomes were recorded. The definition of intraoperative hemorrhage group was the intraoperative blood loss greater than 200 ml. Results Of 94 eligible patients, 44 patients were in the hemorrhage group and 50 patients were in the non-hemorrhage group. Multiple logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the area of excision, classification, surgical site, primary surgical, and organ deformation were significant independent predictors of hemorrhage. Conclusion Early treatment can reduce the tumor cross-sectional area, avoid organ deformation, and reduce intraoperative blood loss. For plexiform neurofibroma or neurofibroma of the head and face, the amount of blood loss should be predicted correctly, and preoperative evaluation and blood preparation should be paid more attention to.
