    Notes: Abstract Short-term phosphate uptake by excised leaves of Zostera noltii Hornem. as well as by leaves of sediment-rooted plants were characterized and compared in a kinetic framework. Time courses of phosphate disappearance were measured over a wide range of initial substrate concentrations. Phosphate uptake determined by this perturbation method did not follow Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Both excised leaves and sediment-rooted plants exhibited a biphasic uptake pattern as a function of phosphate concentration. However, rooted plants showed higher uptake rates and accumulated higher amounts of phosphate than excised leaves. The results point out the importance of the structural and functional coupling between shoots and underground parts during the nutrient foliar uptake processes. Our study also indicates that Zostera noltii leaves function as a phosphate sink in the water column. A second objective of this work is to compare the perturbation and the multiple flask methods in determining the uptake kinetic parameters. The obtained results support that both methods provide valuable and complementary information in determining the uptake rates.

    Notes: Abstract Turbulence is known to enhance growth in microalgae. We studied the possible effects of the extra inorganic carbon supplied to the cultures when air bubbling is the source of turbulence. A set of experiments was carried out to separate the effects of the subsidiary action of agitation on growth from those due to possible carbon enrichment from air CO2 when air bubbling was the source of mixing. It was found that air bubbling does not induce an increase of the concentration of inorganic carbon in HCO 3 − -enriched growth media, and that no differences appear between air-bubbled and CO2-free air-bubbled cultures. On the other hand, photosynthetic O2 was accumulated in the medium in non-mixed cultures, which showed higher respiration and lower photosynthetic rates, probably due to photoinhibition induced by oversaturation of O2. Growth rate, maximal cell density and photosynthetic efficiency were higher in aerated cultures than in non-aerated ones.

    Notes: Abstract The photosynthetic behaviour of Dunaliella parva Lerche from the athalassic lagoon of Fuente de Piedra (Málaga, Southern Spain) was studied experimentally at three NaCl concentrations (1, 2 and 3 M), five temperatures (15, 23, 31, 38 and 42°C) and nine different irradiances between 82 and 891 mol m−2 s−1. Results are analyzed to define the best growing conditions for the algae. D. parva shows the highest photosynthetic rates at a NaCl molarity of 2 M, under a moderate light intensity (600 mol m−2 s−1) at 31°C. Above this light intensity a clear photoinhibition of the photosynthesis was found at 2 M and 3 M of NaCl. D. parva is a halotolerant and a thermoresistant species as evidenced by its net photosynthesis rate and positive values of oxygen evolution at 42°C. Two methods for modelling photosynthesis vs. irradiance curves are discussed. The first is a single model, based on third-order polynomial equations, and the second is double model, based on hyperbolical Michaelis-Menten type functions and negative exponential to define photoinhibition.

    Notes: Abstract During the mixing period sediment traps were placed at 9 different levels of the water column in La Concepción reservoir (Málaga-Spain). During the exposure time a benthic nepheloid layer with high suspended matter was detected. Seston vertical flux profile shows an exponential increase with depth, suggesting that a large fraction of the collected particulate matter comes from bottom resuspension, due to an intermittent complete mixing process. It was estimated that resuspension 1 m above the bottom increased the fluxes of seston, particulate organic carbon, particulate nitrogen and particulate phosphorus by factors of 4.1, 1.5, 2.1 and 4.8 respectively. The, fitting to an exponential function allowed us to obtain a resuspension coefficient and the scale vertical length for this event, 36 m, which is higher than those estimated for other aquatic environments. From the above results the calculated vertical eddy diffusivity, suggesting a high turbulence in the water reservoir during the turnover period. Resuspension is considered important in order to estimate net downward fluxes and to understand different processes such as redistribution of sediment and fertilization of the water column.

    Notes: Abstract Fuente de Piedra saline lake is located in an endorheic basin in the south of Spain. This lake is very shallow (0.5 m max. depth during 1987–88) and relatively large (± 1350 ha). It is a temporary playa lake, showing irregular cycles, with frequent seasonal drought and a high degree of unpredictability. The lake was sampled monthly during a relatively rainy year (1987–88, 10.5 months permanence). The result of combined analyses for environmental variables (salinity, temperature and soluble inorganic forms of nitrogen and phosphorus), variables related to biological activity (chlorophyll ‘a’, sediment organic matter and redox potential) and the direct analysis of the planktonic community, shows the existence of two periods of dominance by autotrophs. The first occurs during winter, exhibits a progressively higher surface to volume ratio for phytoplankton and is followed in the spring by high zooplankton densities (Moina salina, Fabrea salina) and very low phytoplankton densities, suggesting the existence of a period with a detritus-based food web. The summer period coincides with a community better adapted to high salinities that is dominated by Dunaliella salina, D. viridis, diatoms and the ciliate Fabrea salina, and associated with high ammonium concentrations. A new period of organic matter accumulation could be facilitated, in the last moments before the lake dries, by a progressive decrease in zooplankton abundance.

    Notes: Abstract Short (60 minutes) and long term (3 hours) experiments were performed to measure the final equilibrium phosphate concentration in water and the net fluxes of phosphate interchange between water and sediment at different salinities. The rate of phosphate release from the sediment increases with the salinity increment, as well as the final equilibrium phosphate concentration. In both short and long term experiments, the net rate of dissolved phosphate removal follows a saturation kinetics except for long term experiments at 70 g l−1 salinity. In this case, the relationship between net removal and dissolved phosphate concentration is linear. The experiments show that salinity stimulates phosphate release from sediment.

    Notes: Abstract We collected the ephemeral macrophyte Ruppia drepanensis Tin. ex Guss. from the athalassic shallow lake Fuente de Piedra (Málaga. Southern Spain). This lake, situated in an endorheic basin, shows great seasonal changes in depth and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). Dissolved oxygen evolution studied in the laboratory at 17 different photon flux densities (PFD) showed a maximum rate of photosynthesis of 0.55 mg C g dry wt−1 h−1, a light compensation point at 86 µE m−2 s−1 and a saturation point at 333 µE m−2 s−1. A moderate photoinhibition (\ = 1.68 10−4) was found above 695 µE m−2 s−1. Estimates of pigment concentrations revealed 10 times more carotenoids than chlorophyll. The adaptation of the plants to high irradiances and to the particular features of their hypersaline environment are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Species composition and values of diversity, biomass, quantities of chlorophylla and carotenes of 5 algal communities, located at different intertidal levels in northwestern Spain, were studied at monthly intervals. Productivity and loss of matter, as well as the production/biomass ratio in the same communities, are related to environmental stress (e.g. emersion, high temperature) and used to explain the dynamics of the system. Dynamic performances are also related to seasonal changes of patterns of zonation and special micropatchiness. High productivity values (computed values between 0.50 and 2.71 g C m−2 day−1) are ascribed to extra-energy inputs (not due to illumination) in terms of waves, tides and other water movements. The importance of such extra energy for productivity is discussed. Extra-energy is more important at low levels; at high levels its role is substituted by the ability of plants to photosynthesize during emersion periods. High intertidal communities are resistent to stress and hence, “physically controlled”; in contrast, low-level communities are “biologically controlled”. The former are more conservative, the latter less efficient. Based on all data obtained, a hypothesis is presented, regarding the general functioning of intertidal communities.
