    Abstract: The available evidence suggests that the lethality of glioblastoma is driven by small subpopulations of cells that self-renew and exhibit tumorigenicity. It remains unclear whether tumorigenicity exists as a static property of a few cells or as a dynamically acquired property. We used tumor-sphere and xenograft formation as assays for tumorigenicity and examined subclones isolated from established and primary glioblastoma lines. Our results indicate that glioblastoma tumorigenicity is largely deterministic, yet the property can be acquired spontaneously at low frequencies. Further, these dynamic transitions are governed by epigenetic reprogramming through the lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1). LSD depletion increases trimethylation of histone 3 lysine 4 at the avian myelocytomatosis viral oncogene homolog ( MYC ) locus, which elevates MYC expression. MYC, in turn, regulates oligodendrocyte lineage transcription factor 2 (OLIG2), SRY (sex determining region Y)-box 2 (SOX2), and POU class 3 homeobox 2 (POU3F2), a core set of transcription factors required for reprogramming glioblastoma cells into stem-like states. Our model suggests epigenetic regulation of key transcription factors governs transitions between tumorigenic states and provides a framework for glioblastoma therapeutic development.

    Abstract: A time-domain formulation of the equivalent source method which uses planar surface elements is presented. The boundary condition of a closed surface can be fulfilled using monopole elements for boundary conditions specifying the normal velocity, the sound pressure, or the local impedance. By interpreting the equivalent sources as double layers of free-field radiating monopoles with a uniform source signal over the element, the impulse response matrix is easy to find via the Rayleigh integral. The problem of determining the source signals of these equivalent sources involves the inversion of a single real-valued matrix as shown in Kropp and Svensson [Acustica 81, 528–543 (1995)], and the matrix is very sparse. The relation to the boundary element method is discussed, and as an example, the sound radiation from a kettledrum is presented. By using a Green’s function technique, any vibr ation pattern can be synthesized using post-processing. Interpolation can be used to study the far-field radiation of vibration patterns that are more complicated than the element mesh can resolve.

    Abstract: With decreasing temperature, liquids generally freeze into a solid state, losing entropy in the process. However, exceptions to this trend exist, such as quantum liquids, which may remain unfrozen down to absolute zero owing to strong quantum entanglement effects that stabilize a disordered state with zero entropy. Examples of such liquids include Bose−Einstein condensation of cold atoms, superconductivity, quantum Hall state of electron systems, and quantum spin liquid state in the frustrated magnets. Moreover, recent studies have clarified the possibility of another exotic quantum liquid state based on the spin–orbital entanglement in FeSc 2 S 4 . To confirm this exotic ground state, experiments based on single-crystalline samples are essential. However, no such single-crystal study has been reported to date. Here, we report, to our knowledge, the first single-crystal study on the spin–orbital liquid candidate, 6 H -Ba 3 CuSb 2 O 9 , and we have confirmed the absence of an orbital frozen state. In strongly correlated electron systems, orbital ordering usually appears at high temperatures in a process accompanied by a lattice deformation, called a static Jahn−Teller distortion. By combining synchrotron X-ray diffraction, electron spin resonance, Raman spectroscopy, and ultrasound measurements, we find that the static Jahn−Teller distortion is absent in the present material, which indicates that orbital ordering is suppressed down to the lowest temperatures measured. We discuss how such an unusual feature is realized with the help of spin degree of freedom, leading to a spin–orbital entangled quantum liquid state.

    Abstract: Musical instruments often have rather complicated radiation characteristics which have been documented for the case of free-field radiation. This paper studies the effect of the source location relative to the room boundaries on the sound radiation from musical instruments in rooms. The musical instrument is modeled by the equivalent source method, or source substitution method, so that the real source is replaced by a set of simpler sources which approximately reproduces the vibrations on the instrument’s surface. A single corner with rigid walls is used to model the effects of the room boundaries on the sound radiation. As an example, a tympani is studied and theoretical expressions for its surface vibrations are used as input data. The directivity, and total power output, are then studied for various source locations. Possibilities for simplified source directivity modeling for room acoustical simulation are discussed.

    Abstract: Regolith particles on the asteroid Itokawa were recovered by the Hayabusa mission. Their three-dimensional (3D) structure and other properties, revealed by x-ray microtomography, provide information on regolith formation. Modal abundances of minerals, bulk density (3.4 grams per cubic centimeter), and the 3D textures indicate that the particles represent a mixture of equilibrated and less-equilibrated LL chondrite materials. Evidence for melting was not seen on any of the particles. Some particles have rounded edges. Overall, the particles’ size and shape are different from those seen in particles from the lunar regolith. These features suggest that meteoroid impacts on the asteroid surface primarily form much of the regolith particle, and that seismic-induced grain motion in the smooth terrain abrades them over time.
