Description / Table of Contents:
This report summarises the results of rotary scanning sonar measurements made on the seafloor under reversed tidal currents of up to 1 m/s at 1 m above seafloor. Within a 100 m diameter circle of imaging strong differences in bedform movement were observed within a tidal phase. Megaripples were seen to migrate a distance that corresponds to their own length. Even crests of 4-5 m high sand dunes moved several meters. Current speed measurements allow information to be derived about the conditions under which megaripples are formed and flattened. Rotary scanning sonar towers with a high resolution in time can reveal much more about seafloor processes than repeated measurements with echo-sounder,multibeam echo-sounders or side scan sonar. Several time-lapse movies from sonar imaging are included in the report.
