    Description: Background: In the co-evolution between insects and plants, the establishment of floral monosymmetry was an important step in angiosperm development as it facilitated the interaction with insect pollinators and, by that, likely enhanced angiosperm diversification. In Antirrhiunm majus, the TCP transcription factor CYCLOIDEA is the molecular key regulator driving the formation of floral monosymmetry. Although most Brassicaceae form a polysymmetric corolla, six genera develop monosymmetric flowers with two petal pairs of unequal size. In the monosymmetric crucifer Iberis amara, formation of the different petal pairs coincides with a stronger expression of the CYC-homolog IaTCP1 in the small, adaxial petals. Results: In this study, RNA-Seq was employed to reconstruct the petal transcriptome of the non-model species Iberis amara. About 9 Gb of sequence data was generated, processed and re-assembled into 18,139 likely Iberis unigenes, from which 15,983 showed high sequence homology to Arabidopsis proteins. The transcriptome gives detailed insight into the molecular mechanisms governing late petal development. In addition, it was used as a scaffold to detect genes differentially expressed between the small, adaxial and the large, abaxial petals in order to understand the molecular mechanisms driving unequal petal growth. Far more genes are expressed in adaxial compared to abaxial petals implying that IaTCP1 activates more genes than it represses. Amongst all genes upregulated in adaxial petals, a significantly enhanced proportion is associated with cell wall modification and cell-cell signalling processes. Furthermore, microarrays were used to detect and compare quantitative differences in TCP target genes in transgenic Arabidopsis plants ectopically expressing different TCP transcription factors. Conclusions: The increased occurrences of genes implicated in cell wall modification and signalling implies that unequal petal growth is achieved through an earlier stop of the cell proliferation phase in the small, adaxial petals, followed by the onset of cell expansion. This process, which forms the monosymmetric corolla of Iberis amara, is likely driven by the enhanced activity of IaTCP1 in adaxial petals.

    Description: The non-breeding distribution of common scoter (Melanitta nigra), which occur in high densities offshore from the eastern Wadden Sea, has been well documented in recent decades, but factors influencing these patterns remain poorly known. We investigated the prey choice of 88 common scoter using stomach contents of beached birds collected over a period of 12 years. We then used benthos data and hydrodynamic parameters to model the June–September distribution patterns during the flightless period of common scoter based on transect count data off the north-eastern German Wadden Sea. Benthic fauna biomass in areas used by common scoter was higher than in areas where the species was absent. American razor clam (Ensis leei) invaded the Wadden Sea during the end of the 1970s and was the most common prey, both in benthos samples from below feeding common scoter and in stomach samples. The relatively high flesh to shell ratio of the American razor clam makes it the most attractive available prey item for common scoter. The abundance of American razor clams explained the distribution of scoter to a high degree, although the best model fit included negative effects of water depth and positive effects of bed shear stress intensity on scoter abundance. Our data show that the neobiotic American razor clams have become an important part of the diet of these sea ducks, whereas the cut trough shell (Spisula subtruncata) was of substantially lesser importance than expected from historical data. Our study shows the ability of a top avian predator to respond to novel developments in bivalve prey availability over periods of a few decades.

    Description: Global climate change is a key driver of change in coastal waters with clear effects on biological communities and marine ecosystems. Human activities in combination with climate change exert a tremendous pressure on marine ecosystems and threaten their integrity, structure, and functioning. The protection of these ecosystems is a major target of the 14th United Nations sustainable development goal “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.” However, due to the complexity of processes and interactions of stressors, the status assessment of ecosystems remains a challenge. Holistic food web models, including biological and environmental data, could provide a suitable basis to assess ecosystem health. Here, we review climate change impacts on different trophic levels of coastal ecosystems ranging from plankton to ecologically and economically important fish and shellfish species. Furthermore, we show different food web model approaches, their advantages and limitations. To effectively manage coastal ecosystems, we need both a detailed knowledge base of each trophic level and a holistic modeling approach for assessment and prediction of future scenarios on food web-scales. A new model approach with a seamless coupling of physical ocean models and food web models could provide a future tool for guiding ecosystem-based management.

    Description: In contrast to the global trend, seagrass beds have recovered in size and density in the northern part of the European Wadden Sea, but ecosystem effects of seagrass recovery and the impacts to ecosystem services are largely unknown. We used temporaldynamic food web modeling Ecopath with Ecosim to assess potential ecosystemeffects of seagrass recovery in the semi-enclosed Sylt-Rømø Bight at the German-Danish border. In addition to changes in the system’s structure and functioning over time, the model predicted changes in biomass of seagrass-associated species. For seagrass consumers, we projected an increase in biomass as a result of an increase in food supply. Likewise, the model predicted an increase in biomass of seagrass meadow inhabitants from decreased predation pressure. Correspondingly, the main predators of these inhabitants decreased in biomass according to model results. Proxies representing ecosystem services predicted an increase of tourism appeal of the site with increasing seagrass meadows. Indirect mediation effects of seagrass severely influenced the model output and are thus crucial to forecast potential effects of the recovery of habitat-forming species. Our study illustrates that holistic approaches such as food web models could provide a suitable basis for predicting ecosystem effects of changes in the biomass of habitat-forming species such as seagrasses.

    Description: Germany is an EU member state and is thus obliged to monitor and protect its marine and coastal areas in the context of international treaties (e.g. EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive, EU Natura2000 directives, Trilateral Monitoring and Assessment Programme, OSPAR) to achieve the good environmental status (GES). Suitable indicators thus need to be developed to assess the status of relevant ecosystems. Intertidal bivalve beds belong to the most productive habitats in the shallow coastal waters of the Wadden Sea but are highly dynamic and difficult to monitor. Extensive benthos and sediment sampling are required to study their development and distribution. We therefore evaluated the suitability of herring gulls (Larus argentatus) as a bioindicator species for monitoring these habitats. As flexible and opportunistic top-predators, herring gulls prefer to forage on intertidal flats and feed on bivalves (Cerastoderma edule, Mytilus edulis, Ensis leei) and crustaceans, with intertidal habitats near the breeding colony preferred during the incubation period. We used state of the art tracking devices to analyse habitat selection by herring gulls, and assessed how this was driven by biotic and abiotic factors. We then designed a habitat model to predict the occurrence of intertidal bivalve beds for directed monitoring, based on GPS logger data from herring gulls and hydrodynamic data. Both methods showed high correlations of herring gull foraging patterns with bivalve biomass and inundation time, depending on the distance from the breeding colony. The movement patterns of herring gulls clearly mirrored intertidal bivalve distributions. These results showed that combining GPS-logger data for top-predators, such as birds, with environmental data has great potential for monitoring and assessing the GES. We propose that herring gulls may be used as an indicator to locate bivalve beds in the Wadden Sea and to detect changes in the food web.

    Description: Ecological network analysis (ENA) is a helpful tool to study complex ecosystem processes. The diverse species interactions are described as flows of energy providing a simplified representation of the natural system based on attributes and features. In the Wadden Sea, a unique ecosystem along the coastline of Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands, physical forces form the vast intertidal areas to diverse habitat types that differ in their species composition and abundance. Those habitats are important foraging areas for top predators such as birds. In the present study the food web of six habitats characteristic for the Wadden Sea (cockle field, razor clam field, mud flat, mussel bank, sand flat and seagrass meadow) were analyzed in a modelling approach. The functional and structural properties of the food webs were compared to assess differences and similarities in the system functioning. Although all systems revealed a good balance between their degree of organization and their robustness against external perturbations, they differed in their detailed features. The cockle field and the mussel bank both exhibited a strong dependence of their efficiency on external imports. The razor clam field, dominated by the introduced species Ensis directus, appeared to be a rather small and stressed system with low energy transfer. The mud flat system was characterized by a high use of microphytobenthos and appeared to be not fully developed yet. Bird predation was most pronounced in the sand flat and the seagrass meadow and led to an increase in energy transfer, parallel pathways and pathways lengths in these habitats. Each system shows characteristic features and plays a different role in the Wadden Sea ecosystem by contributing significantly to the whole system functioning.
