    Notes: Abstract In this paper, we present some results of our systematic studies of fine‐grained parallelversions of the island model of genetic algorithms and of variants of the neighborhood model(also called diffusion model) on the massively parallel computer MasPar MP1 with 16kprocessing elements. These parallel genetic algorithms have been applied to a range ofdifferent problems (e.g. traveling salesman, capacitated lot sizing, resource‐constrainedproject scheduling, flow shop, and warehouse location problems) in order to obtain anempirical basis for statements on their optimization quality.

    Notes: Summary From June 1986 to December 1988, 107 patients (median age, 49 years; median performance score, 1) with haematogeneous metastases from breast carcinoma were treated with concomitant radiation and chemotherapy. Overall, 97% of the patients had been pretreated with surgery; 65%, with radiation; and 56%, with hormones. In all, 38% had received adjuvant chemotherapy. Patients with prior palliative chemotherapy were excluded from the study. All patients fulfilled at least two high-risk criteria. Chemotherapy was given according to the EI protocol (4-epirubicin and ifosfamide), and all patients simultaneously received radiation to the main tumor sites. Gastro-intestinal toxicity was moderate (11.1%, WHO grade 4), and bone marrow depression was marked in all cases. After three treatment courses, the overall response rate was 67% [21% complete response (CR), 46% partial response (PR)]. In all, 28% had stable disease (NC) and the rate of progressive disease (PD) was 5%. The median duration of tumour response was 8 months, with 12 months for CRs, 9 months for PRs and 6 months for NCs. The median survival was 13.5 months.

    Notes: Summary Between January 1983 and April 1989, 61 patients with brain metastases of primary breast cancer were treated in the Robert Janker Clinic. To optimize the overall response rates, a simultaneous combination of radiation and chemotherapy was used. The patients median age was 49 (range, 30–67) years and the median performance score, 1 (0–2). The average interval between the diagnosis of the primary tumour and the brain metastases was 38 (range, 3–144) months. A total of 82% of the patients had multiple cerebral metastases. All patients had been pretreated with primary surgery; 79%, with radiation; 74%, with chemotherapy; and 64%, with hormones. Radiotherapy was given using a cobalt 60 machine. The whole brain was irradiated in daily fractions of 1.5 Gy, up to a total dose of 45 Gy. Using a split-course technique, this dose was given in three courses simultaneously with the chemotherapy. The chemotherapeutic regimen consisted of ifosfamide given daily for 5 days at 2 g/m2 and the nitrosourea derivative carmustine (BCNU) given at 30 mg/m2 on 3 days. The toxicity of the treatment was moderate; no haemotological or gastro-intestinal complications occurred. Complete and mostly irreversible alopecia occurred in all cases. All patients received a cranial computerized tomographic (CT) scan prior to and after treatment. According to the criteria of the International Union Against Cancer (UICC), there was a complete remission (CR) in 20% of the patients and a partial remission (PR) in 45%; 20% had a minor remission (MR) and 7% showed no change (NC) in the tumour. Another 7% of the patients experienced a progression of their metastases (PD). The median survival was 8 months for all patients and 12 months for those showing a CR.

    Notes: Abstract We investigated a pulsed 504 nm dye laser at a pulse duration of 1.44 μ and a pulse rate of 10 Hz for its angioplasty capabilities. Laser energy was delivered via 9 F multi-fiber ring catheters. Our experimental data showed effective ablation of atheroma and disruption of calcified plaques at an energy fluence of 9.5 J/cm2 under saline and blood. Histologically, there was only minimal thermal injury to adjacent tissues. Irregular tissue borders after radiant energy exposure of 12.7 J/cm2, under blood, provide strong evidence for ablation by a shock-or pressure-wave mechanism. Percutaneous peripheral laser-assisted angioplasty was performed in 25 patients with arterial occlusive disease of the iliac and femoro-poplteal arteries (mean occlusion length 7.2 cm). All lesions were initially traversed by a guide-wire. Technical success was achieved in 24 out of 25 patients (96%). Laser angioplasty decreased the mean stenosis rate from 100% to 51± 12% (P 〈 0.01). The ankle-brachial index (ABI) rose from 0.48±0.16 before to 0.88±0.10 after intervention (P 〈 0.01) with a value of 0.82±0.15 at 6 months follow-up. The overall success rate, judged clinically and by ABI determinations in all patients, was 84% at a mean follow-up period of 7.9 months. The number of stand-alone laser procedure was 21%. Clinical application of the delivery devices proved to be safe due to the “over-the-wire” approach. Our prelimanary clinical data encourage further refinement of pulsed dye laser angioplasty for more efficacious debulking of atheroma.

    Notes: Abstract  Mohns Ridge lavas between 71 and 72°30′N (∼360 km) have heterogeneous compositions varying between alkali basalts and incompatible-element-depleted tholeiites. On a large scale there is a continuity of incompatible element and isotopic compositions between the alkali basalts from the island Jan Mayen and Mohns Ridge tholeiites. The variation in isotopes suggests a heterogeneous mantle which appears to be tapped preferentially by low degree melts (∼5%) close to Jan Mayen but also shows its signature much further north on Mohns Ridge. Three lava types with different incompatible element compositions [e.g. chondrite-normalized (La/Sm)N〈1 to 〉2] occur in the area at 72°N and were generated from this heterogeneous mantle. The relatively depleted tholeiitic melts were mixed with a small degree melt from an enriched source. The elements Ba, Rb and K of the enriched melt were probably buffered in the mantle by residual amphibole or phlogopite. That such a residual phase is stable in this region of oceanic mantle suggests both high water contents and low mantle temperatures, at odds with a hotspot origin for Jan Mayen. Instead we suggest that the melting may be induced by the lowered solidus temperature of a “wet” mantle. Mohns MORB (mid ocean ridge basalt) and Jan Mayen area alkali basalts have high contents of Ba and Rb compared to other incompatible elements (e.g. Ba/La 〉10). These ratios reflect the signature of the mantle source. Ratios of Ce/Pb and Rb/Cs are normal MORB mantle ratios of 25 and 80, respectively, thus the enrichments of Ba and Rb are not indicative of a sedimentary component added to the mantle source but were probably generated by the influence of a metasomatizing fluid, as supported by the presence of hydrous phases during the petrogenesis of the alkali basalts. Geophysical and petrological models suggest that Jan Mayen is not the product of hotspot activity above a mantle plume, and suggest instead that it owes its existence to the unique juxtaposition of a continental fragment, a fracture zone and a spreading axis in this part of the North Atlantic.

    Notes: Abstract The Onega plateau constitutes part of a vast continental flood basalt province in the SE Baltic Shield. It consists of Jatulian-Ludikovian submarine volcanic, volcaniclastic and sedimentary sequences attaining in places 4.5 km in thickness. The parental magmas of the lavas contained ∼10% MgO and were derived from melts generated in the garnet stability field at depths 80–100 km. The Sm-Nd mineral and Pb-Pb whole-rock isochron ages of 1975 ± 24 and 1980 ± 57 Ma for the upper part of the plateau and a SHRIMP U-Pb zircon age of 1976 ± 9 Ma for its lower part imply the formation of the entire sequence within a short time span. These ages coincide with those of picrites in the Pechenga-Imandra belt (the Kola Peninsula) and komatiites and basalts in the Karasjok-Kittilä belt (Norway and Finnmark). Together with lithostratigraphic, chemical and isotope evidence, these ages suggest the derivation of the three provinces from a single large (∼2000 km in diameter) mantle plume. These plume-generated magmas covered ∼600,000 km2 of the Baltic Shield and represent a major contribution of juvenile material to the existing continental crust at 2.0 Ga. The uppermost Onega plateau lavas have high (Nb/Th)N = 1.4–2.4, (Nb/La)N= 1.1–1.3, positive ɛNd(T) of +3.2 and unradiogenic Pb-isotope composition (μ1 = 8.57), comparable with those of modern oceanic plume-derived magmas (oceanic flood basalt and ocean island basalt). These parameters are regarded as source characteristics. The lower sequences have (Nb/Th)N= 0.58–1.2, (Nb/La)N= 0.52–0.88 and ɛNd(T) =−2.6. They have experienced mixing with 10–30% of continental crust and resemble contaminated lavas from other continental flood basalt provinces. The estimated Nb/U ratios of 53 ± 4 in the uncontaminated rocks are similar to those found in the modern mantle (∼47) suggesting that by 2.0 Ga a volume of continental crust similar to the present-day value already existed.
