Notizen: Abstract Copolymerization of aniline (AN) and para-phenylenediamine (PPDA) was electrochemically performed by cyclic voltammetry on IrO2-coated titanium electrodes in 0.5m H2SO4. The cyclic voltammograms, with and without a middle peak at about 580 mV, can be produced by controlling the PPDA concentration in the aniline solution during polymer preparation. The peak at about 580 mV corresponds to the para-aminophenol/benzoquinoneimine (PAP/QI) redox couple and crosslinking sites. The mass of polymer deposited on an IrO2-coated titanium electrode is correlated with the polymer anodic peak current, which allows the rates of polymer deposition to be monitored by increases in the anodic peak current at various PPDA concentrations. SEM photographs show that the morphology of the polymer film depends dramatically on PPDA concentration. Stability test information can be used in generating an effective index to discern between the crosslinking and the PAP/QI reactions induced by PPDA. The linear relationship between the second redox process potential (E 1/2), corresponding to the oxidation and reduction between polaronic emeraldine and pernigraniline in PPDA-modified PANI films, and pH, possesses a slope of about -120 mV/pH.

Notizen: Abstract The heterogeneous catalytic redox behaviour of NiS x deposited electrodes was investigated with and without benzyl alcohol in KOH solution using cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry. The limiting current density for benzyl alcohol oxidation on a NiS x electrode was 22 times larger than that on a polished nickel electrode. The experimental results in galvanostatic electrolysis using fractional factorial design showed that the main and interaction effects of benzyl alcohol concentration, temperature, and OH− concentration are the key variables influencing the selectivity of benzaldehyde formation during electrolysis.

Notizen: Abstract The electrocatalytic activities of Ru-Pt binary oxide electrodes prepared by thermal decomposition for both oxygen and chlorine evolution reactions (OER and CER) were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and log i/E relationships (Tafel study). Both CV and Tafel studies revealed that the electrodes from the coating solutions with 60 and 20 mol % Pt content possessed the maximum apparent activity for OER and optimal apparent activity for CER/hypochlorite production, respectively. The specific activity (i/q *) revealed that mixing of the RuO2 and PtO x had no synergistic effects for OER due to the occurrence of phase segregation, which was revealed by element mapping/surface morphologies and Auger electron spectroscopy. Lower current efficiencies for hypochlorite production were found on the freshly prepared binary electrodes (type I electrodes) than on those having been treated by repetitive CVs (type II electrodes). Stability testing of both type I and II electrodes was measured in 0.5 m NaCl solution at 300 mA cm−2 for 480 h, indicating that both type I and II electrodes are quite stable under the above conditions.

Notizen: Abstract Thermally prepared ternary Ir–Pt–Au electrodes were investigated experimentally over their entire compositional range using the mixture design method. The results, involving voltammetric charges from electrode redox (q*), oxygen reduction current densities (i), and their correspondingly electrocatalytic activities (i/q*), are examined through regression models and response surface contour plots. Using mixture experimental design, the empirical models are fitted and plotted as contour diagrams which facilitate comparisons with experimental trends noted by other investigators and reveal the synergistic/antagonistic effects between the mixed oxides. The material characterization was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to assist in interpreting the electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction.

Notizen: Abstract Ruthenium–platinum binary oxides [(Ru + Pt)O x ] were coated on titanium substrates by thermal decomposition. The surface morphologies and elemental analyses of these electrodes were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemical behaviour was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear scanning voltammetry (LSV). The effects of electrolyte conditions on the current efficiency (CE) of hypochlorite production on binary (Ru + Pt)O x electrodes and the treatment of a high salt-containing dye wastewater using this hypochlorite were also investigated. The highest CE for hypochlorite production occurred on the RP1 (20 mol% Pt in precursor) electrode. The major factors influencing CE for hypochlorite production were the electrolyte flow rate, current density and chloride ion (C1−) concentration. The RP1 electrode exhibited the best removal of organics and chromophoric groups in the dye wastewater. On this electrode, better removal of organics and chromophoric groups was obtained at 300 mA cm−2. The colour of black–red dye wastewater became light yellow when a charge of 13.2 A h was passed while the COD of the wastewater decreased from 10 500 to 1250 mg L−1.

Notizen: Abstract The effect of such electroplating conditions as current density, thiourea (TU) concentration, temperature and pH on the sulphur content of NiS x deposited electrodes has been systematically studied using fractional factorial design and response surface methodology. Fractional factorial analysis indicates that the main and interaction effects of TU concentration and current density are the key variables influencing sulphur content in a NiS x deposit. Empirical models for sulphur content and hydrogen evolution overpotential are fitted and plotted, using central composite experimental design, as contour diagrams in order to facilitate comparison with experimental sulphur content trends and hydrogen evolving activity. The results show that, for deposits containing 〉 12 wt % sulphur content, hydrogen evolving activity increases with increasing sulphur content, while for those possessing 〈 12 wt% sulphur content, hydrogen evolution overpotential decreases with increasing electroplating current density.

Notizen: Abstract The heterogeneous electrocatalytic redox behaviour of RuO2 electrodes fabricated by thermal decomposition is investigated with and without benzyl alcohol using cyclic voltammetric and potentiodynamic techniques. The cyclic voltammetric results show that benzyl alcohol oxidation is mediated by perruthenate ion electrogenerated at the electrode surface. Evaluation of kinetic parameters in relation to Tafel lines allows the postulation of a plausible reaction scheme in which benzyl alcohol adsorbs on the RuO2 electrode surface and the rate determining step is chemical reaction between perruthenate and adsorbed species. The reaction orders with respect to benzyl alcohol and OH− concentrations are 0.85 and 1, respectively. The results in galvanostatic electrolysis show that the major product for benzyl alcohol oxidation in an aqueous solution is benzaldehyde, and the organic yield is affected by such electrolysis conditions as t-butanol concentration, electrolysis current density, KOH concentration and electrolysis temperature.
