Notes: Abstract The upward creep of the heart during myocardial single photon emission tomography (SPET) acquisition has been reported as a frequent source of false-positive results. The aim of this study was to simplify the detection and correction of this upward creep and to estimate its clinical relevance during routine patient care. To recognize the upward heart motion a straight line was fitted to the upper and lower border of consecutively displayed tomographic projection images. In this way, vertical translation of at least 1 pixel in size could be detected easily. On the assumption of a slow but continuous upward motion a fast interpolation correction method was developed. From 100 consecutive, supine, ergometric exercise studies, 1, 2 or 3 pixels of upward creep were found in 16, 4 or 3 patients, respectively. It was found that an upward creep of at least 2 pixels (7/100 cases) led to evident, mostly antero-septal defects on quantitative bull's-eyes, whereas only upward creeps of 3 pixels or more (3/100 cases) produced false-positive diagnostic results. The simple correction method offered a sufficient compensation of image and/or bull's-eye artefacts. These clinical findings could be reproduced in a computer model. Thus, it can be stated that clinically significant upward creep of the heart during stress SPET acquisition is relatively rare; it may have been overestimated in the past, and its artificial effects can be corrected by a quick and simple algorithm.

Notes: Abstract The exact regional correlation of findings of facial bone scans, planar or SPECT, to dental orthopan X-ray films (OPT) is difficult because of the very different projection techniques. To improve correlative imaging in this regard a projection algorithm was developed that uses SPECT data of the skull for reconstructing an orthopan tomoscintigraphic projection. Fourteen conventional SPECT slices of the upper and lower jaws were obtained during bone scanning. All mandibular slices were superimposed resulting in a horseshoe shaped structure, which was marked by an ROI which was divided into segments. All 14 SPECT slices were then masked by this segmental ROI, thereby marking the teeth-carrying bone in all slices. The information from this horseshoe like ROI is then transformed into lines. Line by line arrangement results in an orthopan projection, the orthopan tomoscintigram. This new display allows 1:1 true scale superimposition with the X-ray OPT and markedly facilitates correlative imaging.

Description: We measured aerosol size distributions and conducted bulk as well as size segregated aerosol sampling during two summer campaigns in January 2015 and January 2016 at the continental Antarctic station Kohnen (Dronning Maud Land). Physical and chemical aerosol properties differ conspicuously during the episodic impact of an outstanding low pressure system in 2015 (LPS15) compared to the prevailing clear sky conditions (CSC): The about three days persisting LPS15, located in the eastern Weddell Sea, was associated with marine boundary layer (MBL) air mass intrusion, enhanced condensation particle concentrations (1400±700 cm-3 compared to 250±120 cm-3 during CSC; mean ± SD), occurrence of a new particle formation (NPF) event exhibiting a continuous growth of particle diameters (Dp) from 12 nm to 43 nm over 44 hours (growth rate 0.6 nm h-1), peaking methane sulfonate (MS-), non-sea salt sulfate (nss-SO42-) and Na+ concentrations (190 ng m-3 MS-, 137 ng m-3 nss-SO42-, and 53 ng m-3 Na+ compared to 24±15 ng m-3, 107±20 ng m-3 and 4.1±2.2 ng m-3, respectively, during CSC), and finally an increased MS-/nss-SO42- mass ratio ßMS of 0.4 up to 2.3 (0.21±0.1 during CSC) comparable to typical values found at coastal Antarctic sites. Throughout the observation period a larger part of MS- could be found in super micron aerosol compared to nss-SO42-, i.e. (10±2) % by mass compared to (3.2±2) %, respectively. On the whole, during CSC aged aerosol characterized by an usually mono-modal size distribution around Dp = 60 nm was observed. Although our observations indicate that sporadic impacts of coastal cyclones were associated with enhanced marine aerosol entry, at large aerosol deposition on-site during austral summer should be dominated by the typical steady CSC.

Description: During three summer campaigns in January/February 2000, 2001, and 2002 the ionic composition of the aerosol at the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA) deep-drilling site at Kohnen Station was measured in daily resolution. In 2000 and 2002 we observed mean (±std) non-sea-salt sulfate (nss-[SO4]2-) concentrations of 353 ± 100 ng/m**3 and 320 ± 250 ng/m**3, as well as methane sulfonate (MS) concentrations of 59 ± 36 ng/m**3 and 74 ± 80 ng/m**3, respectively. For the summer campaign in 2001, significantly lower nss-[SO4]2- and MS levels of 164 ± 150 ng/m**3 and 19 ± 12 ng/m**3, respectively, were typical. The mean MS/nss-[SO4]2- ratio ranged from about 0.1 to 0.2. MS and nss-[SO4]2- concentrations and their variability were roughly comparable to coastal stations at summer. Supported by air mass back trajectory analyses, this finding documented an efficient long-range transport to Kohnen via the free troposphere. MS/nss-[SO4]2- ratios exhibited a strong dependence on the MS concentration with systematically higher ratios at higher MS concentrations, a peculiarity which is also evident in a firn core drilled at this site.
