    Description: Studies of short-lived radiogenic isotope systems and noble gas isotopic compositions of plume-derived rocks suggest the existence of primordial domains in Earth's present-day mantle. Tungsten-182 anomalies together with high 3He/4He in Phanerozoic rocks from large igneous provinces and ocean island basalts demonstrate the preservation of early-formed (within the first 60 Ma of solar system history) mantle domains tapped by modern mantle plumes. It has proven difficult to link the evidence for primordial domains with geochemical evidence for more recent processes, such as recycling. The Greenland-Iceland plume system, starting with eruptions of the Paleocene North Atlantic Igneous Province, is later manifested in the mid-Miocene to modern volcanic products of Iceland. Here, we report Pb isotopic compositions, μ182W (deviations in 182W/184W of a sample from a laboratory reference standard in parts per million), and 3He/4He, as well as highly siderophile element concentrations and Re-Os isotopic systematics of basaltic samples erupted at different times during the ~60 Ma history of the Greenland-Iceland plume. Paleocene samples from Greenland, representing the early stage of the mantle plume, are characterized by variable 3He/4He ranging from 7 to 48 R/RA (measured 3He/4He normalized to the atmospheric ratio) and an average μ182W of −4.0 ± 3.6 (2SD), within modern upper mantle-like values of 0 ± 4.5. The basalts from Iceland can be divided into two groups based on their Pb isotope compositions. One group, consisting mostly of Miocene basalts, is characterized by 206Pb/204Pb ranging from ~18.4 to 18.5, 3He/4He ranging from 17.8 to 40.2 R/RA, and μ182W values ranging from +1.7 to −9.1 ± 4.5. The other group, consisting mainly of Pleistocene and Holocene basalts, is characterized by higher 206Pb/204Pb, ranging from ~18.7 to 19.2, 3He/4He ranging from 7.9 to 25.7 R/RA, and μ182W values ranging from −0.6 to −11.7 ± 4.5. Collectively, the Greenland-Iceland suite examined requires mixing between a minimum of three mantle source domains characterized by distinct Pb-He-W isotopic compositions, in order to account for this range of isotopic data. The temporal changes in the isotopic data for these rocks appear to track the dominant contributing plume components as the system evolved. One of the domains is indistinguishable from the ambient upper oceanic mantle and contributed substantial material throughout the time progression. The other two domains are most likely primordial reservoirs that underwent limited de-gassing. Given the negative μ182W values in some rocks, one of these domains likely formed within the first 60 Ma of solar system history and is a major contributor to the youngest basalts. The isotopic characteristics of Greenland-Iceland plume-derived rocks reveal episodic changes in the source component proportions.

    Description: Abyssal peridotites are normally thought to be residues of melting of the mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) source and are presumably a record of processes affecting the upper mantle. Samples from a single section of abyssal peridotite from the Kane Transform area in the Atlantic Ocean were examined for 190Pt-186Os and 187Re-187Os systematics. They have uniform 186Os/188Os ratios with a mean of 0.1198353 +/- 7, identical to the mean of 0.1198340 +/-12 for Os-Ir alloys and chromitites believed to be representative of the upper mantle. While the Pt/Os ratios of the upper mantle may be affected locally by magmatic processes, these data show that the Pt/Os ratio for the bulk upper mantle has not deviated by more than about +/- 30% from a chondritic Pt/Os ratio over 4.5 billion years. These observations are consistent with the addition of a chondritic late veneer after core separation as the primary control on the highly siderophile element budget of the terrestrial upper mantle. The 187Os/188Os of the samples range from 0.12267 to 0.12760 and correlate well with Pt and Pt/Os, but not Re/Os. These relationships may be explained by variable amounts of partial melting with changing D(Re), reflecting in part garnet in the residue, with a model-dependent melting age between about 600 and 1700 Ma. A model where the correlation between Pt/Os and 187Os/188Os results from multiple ancient melting events, in mantle peridotites that were later juxtaposed by convection, is also consistent with these data. This melting event or events are evidently unrelated to recent melting under mid-ocean ridges, because recent melting would have disturbed the relationship between Pt/Os and 187Os/188Os. Instead, this section of abyssal peridotite may be a block of refractory mantle that remained isolated from the convecting portions of the upper mantle for 600 Ma to 〉1 Ga. Alternatively, Pt and Os may have been sequestered during more recent melting and possibly melt/rock reaction processes, thereby preserving an ancient melting history. If representative of other abyssal peridotites, then the rocks from this suite with subchondritic 187Os/188Os are not simple residues of recent MORB source melting at ridges, but instead have a more complex history. This suite of variably depleted samples projects to an undepleted present-day Pt/Os of about 2.2 and 187Os/188Os of about 0.128-0.129, consistent with estimates for the primitive upper mantle.

    Description: Organic-rich sediments (sapropels) deposited in the Mediterranean are presumed to have formed during periods of increased productivity, and/or deep water oxygen depletion, possibly including the development of sulfidic conditions (euxinia). Geochemical redox proxies (Re, Mo, Mo isotopes, V, Fe/Al, and multiple S isotopes) in 8 sapropels from the Pleistocene confirm water column euxinic conditions of varying intensity during sapropel deposition. These same proxies indicate an oxic origin for hemipelagic sediments deposited between sapropel-forming episodes. In one intensively sampled sapropel, deposited between 1.450 and 1.458 Ma, changing concentrations of organic carbon, Ba, Re, Mo, V, and Fe/Al track one another closely, reflecting coupling between water column euxinia and biological productivity. Multiple S isotope data from this sapropel suggest that the redox interface where oxidative sulfur cycling occurred was present in the sediments during hemipelagic sedimentation, but moved into the water column during sapropel deposition. Molybdenum isotopes of these 8 sapropels encompass a range of values (d98Mo = +0.2 to +1.7), but are all 98Mo-depleted relative to seawater (d98Mo = +2.3 per mil), suggesting that quantitative removal of Mo did not occur. This finding contrasts with modern Black Sea sediments. In general, Re/Mo ratios in sapropels are greater than in modern seawater, implying that the water column was not sufficiently sulfidic during sapropel-forming episodes to induce complete removal of both these elements. Surprisingly, the heaviest d98Mo values are found within hemipelagic sediments. Very few of the hemipelagic samples preserve the negative d98Mo values commonly associated with modern oxic marine sediments. Many of the hemipelagic samples also contained higher concentrations of Re and Mo than are common in oxic sediments. These features may be attributable to diffusion from the sapropels of a 98Mo-enriched component into the hemipelagic sediments.
