Description: Impacts of climate change on heat budget in the Eastern China Seas (ECSs) are estimated under the historical, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios using an atmosphere-ocean coupled regional climate model system (REMO/MPIOM). The results suggest that the recent and future ocean warming over the ECSs is linked overall to an increased oceanic heat transport by currents, which is partly compensated by the air-sea heat exchange. The Taiwan Strait is the major source of oceanic heat into the ECSs, whereas the shelf break section (SBS) acts as a heat sink. An increased net oceanic heat transport into the ECSs is projected under both considered RCP scenarios, mainly resulting from a reduction of the outward heat transport through the SBS. The mean relative contribution of SBS to the oceanic heat transport thus decreases by 4%–5% under both RCP scenarios, relative to historical run. Regarding the surface air-sea exchange, the heat loss caused by thermal radiation, latent and sensible heat in the ECSs exceeds the heat gain achieved by solar radiation. Under the RCP scenarios, warmer SST and stronger surface wind will enhance the upward latent heat flux, eventually leading to a more pronounced heat loss from the ECSs. The mean relative contributions of the latent heat flux to the air-sea heat exchange notably increases by 2%–3% under both projection scenarios, relative to historical run. Taking into account all components of the ECSs heat balance, we deduce that the increased horizontal heat transport will enhance the surface evaporation over the ECSs under future warming.

Description: Freshwater in the Arctic Ocean plays an important role in the regional ocean circulation, sea ice, and global climate. From salinity observed by a variety of platforms, we are able, for the first time, to estimate a statistically reliable liquid freshwater trend from monthly gridded fields over all upper Arctic Ocean basins. From 1992 to 2012 this trend was 600 ± 300 km3 yr−1. A numerical model agrees very well with the observed freshwater changes. A decrease in salinity made up about two thirds of the freshwater trend and a thickening of the upper layer up to one third. The Arctic Ocean Oscillation index, a measure for the regional wind stress curl, correlated well with our freshwater time series. No clear relation to Arctic Oscillation or Arctic Dipole indices could be found. Following other observational studies, an increased Bering Strait freshwater import to the Arctic Ocean, a decreased Davis Strait export, and enhanced net sea ice melt could have played an important role in the freshwater trend we observed.

Notes: Experimental 120-turn thin-film inductive heads have been built. The key features of this head are the 6-μm pitch helical coils and an omega-shaped, planar yoke structure having dual easy axes. Hardbaked photoresist insulator layers are used to encapsulate the yoke and to smooth out the wafer surface topography. Micro-Kerr studies show that the easy axis remains in the transverse direction in the yokes after multiple anneals. The P1/G/P2 is 3.8/0.3/3.8 μm, and the yoke length is close to 1 mm. The helical coils were built with a novel process that combines yoke/stud coplating and a photoresist planarization process. The coil resistance is 68Ω and the inductance is 5.5 μH. The yoke saturates at 5 mA. The heads were tested over disks having Mrt of 2.5 memu/cm2 and Hc of 1500 Oe. The write threshold current is 5.3 mA (peak-to-peak) and the overwrite is 30 dB. The isolated pulse amplitude Vpp is 10.3 μV/(TwV), where track width Tw is in μm and the linear velocity V in m/s.

Notes: The electromechanical response of a polyurethane elastomer was investigated at room temperature and in the temperature range near its glass transition. It was found that the Maxwell stress contribution to the strain response can be significant at temperatures higher than the glass transition temperature. In addition, the material exhibits a very high electrostrictive coefficient Q, about two orders of magnitude higher than that of polyvinylidene fluoride. It was also found that in a polymeric material, the chain segment motions can be divided into those related to the polarization response and those related to the mechanical response and the overlap between the two yields the electromechanical response of the material. In general, the activation energies for different types of motion can be different, resulting in different relaxation times in the dielectric, the elastic compliance, and the electrostrictive data, as observed in the polyurethane elastomer investigated. The experimental results indicate that at the temperatures investigated, the activation energy for the mechanical related segment motions is higher than that of nonmechanical related segment motions. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
