Summary The relation between the diurnal variation of the geomagnetic elements and the solar activity is investigated for the years 1955 to 1962 on the basis of the standard deviation of the hourly means from the daily average, and of the Fourier waves of the 24 and 12 hours period as functions of the relative sunspot numbers. It can be shown that the standard deviation of the diurnal variation as well as both Fourier amplitudes initially increase quickly with the sunspot number, whereas the increase becomes more moderate with larger sunspot numbers. This damping is differently strong with the various parameters of the different elements. Further, the relations between the solar activity and the degree of the disturbance of the diurnal variation of the geomagnetic elements are investigated. Finally, some possible explanations for these results are discussed.
