Notizen: Vigna unguiculata L. (Walp.)] crop residues could be used to reduce fertilizer N inputs with fall broccoli [Brassica oleracea L. (Italica Group)]. Studies in 1992, 1993, and 1994 involved broccoli preceded by cowpeas, with one or without factorial combinations of preplant N and sidedress N from urea on the broccoli. Control broccoli plants were grown on fallowed ground and supplied with 168 kg ha–1 of N from urea. Cowpea crop residues alone did not provide sufficient N for optimum production of marketable broccoli. Marketable broccoli yields sometimes showed no significant differences between controls and cowpea residue treatments receiving only 84 kg ha–1 of fertilizer N. However, there was a tendency for increased broccoli transplant mortality in cowpea residue plots. A fourth study in 1994 indicated a negative main effect of cowpeas on broccoli stand establishment, and a complex interaction of cowpeas and trifluralin treatments on broccoli yield. Petiole N concentrations of broccoli plants with reduced fertilizer N inputs which succeeded cowpeas usually were lower than those of control plants. Soil nitrate levels at 15- to 30-cm soil depths at the time of broccoli planting were consistent indicators of apparent nitrate utilization by microbial decomposition of cowpea crop residues. We were unable to demonstrate a cowpea-broccoli succession cropping system which consistently reduced fertilizer N inputs without some type of adverse effect on the broccoli crop. Therefore, the use of cowpea crop residues to reduce fertilizer N inputs with fall broccoli is not recommended.

Beschreibung: IJERPH, Vol. 14, Pages 1127: Socioeconomic Inequalities in Health and Perceived Unmet Needs for Healthcare among the Elderly in Germany International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health doi: 10.3390/ijerph14101127 Authors: Jens Hoebel Alexander Rommel Sara Schröder Judith Fuchs Enno Nowossadeck Thomas Lampert Research into health inequalities in the elderly population of Germany is relatively scarce. This study examines socioeconomic inequalities in health and perceived unmet needs for healthcare and explores the dynamics of health inequalities with age among elderly people in Germany. Data were derived from the Robert Koch Institute’s cross-sectional German Health Update study. The sample was restricted to participants aged 50–85 years (n = 11,811). Socioeconomic status (SES) was measured based on education, (former) occupation, and income. Odds ratios and prevalence differences were estimated using logistic regression and linear probability models, respectively. Our results show that self-reported health problems were more prevalent among men and women with lower SES. The extent of SES-related health inequalities decreased at older ages, predominantly among men. Although the prevalence of perceived unmet needs for healthcare was low overall, low SES was associated with higher perceptions of unmet needs in both sexes and for several kinds of health services. In conclusion, socioeconomic inequalities in health exist in a late working age and early retirement but may narrow at older ages, particularly among men. Socially disadvantaged elderly people perceive greater barriers to accessing healthcare services than those who are better off.

Beschreibung: This paper argues that, although Japan's and Germany's energy transition paths differ in detail, a trend towards decentralisation is clearly evident in both countries. Based on comprehensive screening, own stocktaking and the results of a stakeholder dialogue, this paper highlights the motivation for different local actors to enter the energy market in both countries. Although there are challenges to success in a market dominated by large energy companies, this paper argues that the benefits to local communities outweigh the efforts. Overall, it is shown that democratisation and the decentralisation of the energy system are suitable to facilitate a successful transformation process in both countries.

Beschreibung: Europe needs a new vision of progress. An energy transition has this potential. It can give the "European idea" a future-oriented content. The goal for 2050 is clear: a Europe without fossil and nuclear energy! This is not a utopia. Studies, resolutions of the EU and some member states prove that this vision is feasible and has many advantages: more jobs, more security of supply, fewer premature deaths due to air pollution, reduction of resource conflicts, falling energy costs. New green lead markets for renewable energies and resource efficiency are emerging. A European energy transition requires an alliance, ideally fuelled by neighbours France and Germany. Many are hoping for Germany as a driver of nuclear and coal phase-out. But deciding on "revolutionary goals" is not enough: finally implementing them is what Germany and Europe are waiting for. This report shows which concrete steps can advance this vision of progress.
