    Notes: We have attempted to develop an in vitro system where polyclonal B lymphocyte responses could be induced in ‘antigen-like’ conditions, that is, where surface immunoglobulin-dependant binding mediates interaction with a mitogen. Monoclonal anti-μ and anti-δ antibodies were covalently bound to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and these complexes were shown to display mitogenic activity. Polyclonal plaque-forming-cell (PFC) responses, however, were diminished in cultures stimulated by anti-μ-LPS (but not by anti-δ-LPS) indicating that ‘anti-μ inhibition’ of terminal B-cell differentiation also applies to ‘specific’ antibody responses. Moreover, the analysis of the functional activity of monoclonal antibodies to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules revealed a surprising synergy between low. non-stimulatory concentrations of anti-μ-LPS (but not anti-SdL-LPS) with anti-I-A antibodies. These responses are T-cell dependent and synergy with anti-μ-LPS conjugates can also be obtained with ‘naturally’ activated CD4+ cells isolated from normal donors. A model of molecular and cellular interactions was derived, which accounts for the present findings and is applicable in antigen-dependent lymphocyte collaboration.

    Notes: Abstract Objective: A study was carried out to investigate temporal changes of activation of shoulder and back muscles in workers at visual display units by means of surface EMG. Moreover, postural parameters were recorded to distinguish fatigue-related from posture-related changes of the myoelectrical activity. Methods: Nine healthy female office workers typed texts spoken from tape during three 1-h-long sessions. After the first and again after the second hour there was a break of 15 min. Sixteen-channel surface EMG was bipolarly recorded from the erector spinae, trapezius, deltoid and sternocleidomastoid muscles. Root mean square (RMS) and power spectrum median frequency of the EMG were calculated. Sitting posture was assessed using an eight-channel movement analysis system with ultrasound markers. The position of the seventh cervical spinous process and the left and the right acromion were analysed synchronously with the EMG characteristics using regression analysis. Results: The normalised RMS of the left and right trapezius muscle increased, while the median frequency did not change. The increase of the normalised RMS was significantly lower when the linear influence of posture was excluded. On average, the distance between C7 and the left and right acromion decreased within each working an hour. C7 became lower on average by 5.5 mm within an hour, whereas the acromions became lower by only 1.7 mm (left) and 3.3 mm (right). Conclusion: The increase in trapezius muscle activity was partly related to a lifting of the shoulders to compensate a slight slumping of the back. Another part of the EMG activity increase has to be attributed to fatigue, to attention-related activity or to the combination of both. Therefore, training of the back muscles and a varied organisation of work might have a preventive effect with respect to musculoskeletal complaints in VDU workers.

    Notes: Abstract We perform the standard spin wave analysis of the triangular Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet with nearest neighbour coupling. The exchange interaction is taken to be ΔJ z=J x=J y (0〈Δ≦1). We give a simple explanation of the non-trivial classical degeneracy pointed out by Miyashita and Kawamura and show that it is removed by quantum fluctuations, but that the degeneracy manifests itself through the appearance of a second gapless spin-wave branch. The existence of a second gapless mode has a drastic influence on the quasiclassical behaviour near the Ising limit: the energy gain with respect to the Ising state energy is found to be linear in Δ, and the reduction of the sublattice magnetization on two of the three sublattices remains finite as Δ→0. These findings essentially invalidate the original qualitative arguments [14] in favour of a spin-liquid ground state of the anisotropic triangular antiferromagnet.

    Notes: Abstract It has been argued that the case of strong uniaxial anisotropy is especially favourable for the formation of a spin-liquid state in theS=1/2 triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet [77]. We reconsider the old arguments using up-to-date numerical techniques, and extend the study to general values ofS. Recent progress in the understanding of this frustrated quantum spin system sheds light on the question why the original arguments in favour of an RVB state can not be conclusive. Our present results indicate that the tendency towards three-sublattice ordering is much stronger than it had been thought. However, the caseS=1/2 is still seen to be set apart from the casesS〉1/2, and forS=1/2 the existence of true longrange order in the ground state remains debatable.

    Description: In this study we investigate a group of metabasaltic sills from the SW Scottish Highlands metamorphosed at epidote-amphibolite facies conditions that provide useful insight into the mechanisms and characteristics of fluid infiltration during metamorphism. The sills are amphibole and garnet bearing and exhibit a strong foliation in the sill margins that developed pre- to syn-peak metamorphism. Fluid infiltration caused hydration and carbonation in the sills, expressed as (1) replacement of garnet and amphibole by chlorite and calcite and (2) replacement of amphibole and epidote to form chlorite and calcite. Using garnet-amphibole and garnet-chlorite geothermometers we show that these reactions occurred after peak metamorphism at T = 290 to 400 °C. Reaction textures show that the fluid infiltration into the sill that caused hydration and carbonation occurred in the absence of deformation. The fluid infiltration was mineralogically controlled with greater fluid access in areas of abundant fine-grained elongate minerals such as amphibole and chlorite. The replacement of garnet by chlorite most likely occurred by an interface-coupled dissolution-precipitation mechanism as evidenced by perfect pseudomorphic textures of garnet, porosity generation behind the reactive interface and fracturing ahead of this interface. Porosity generated in the product chlorite enhanced fluid access to the replacement front. The study shows that deformation was not required for extensive fluid infiltration and alteration during metamorphism. Fluid flow uses a pre-existing foliation to gain access to the rock, taking advantage of the anisotropic shape of the aligned minerals.

    Description: Two types of blue halo (types I and II) composed of blueschist-facies minerals are centered around a brittle, normal shear zone in greenschist-facies rocks on the island of Syros, Aegean Sea, Greece. The shear zone is steeply dipping and cuts a near-horizontal layer of greenschist-facies rocks (albite + epidote + actinolite + chlorite + quartz). Type I and II blue haloes are 0·3 m and c . 1 m wide respectively, and are seen on both sides of the shear zone. The inner type I haloes are composed of nearly pure glaucophane schist and were formed by metasomatic addition of Na 2 O and SiO 2 , and to a lesser extent of K 2 O and large ion lithophile elements (LILE), coupled with loss of CaO, Al 2 O 3 and MnO. The outer type II haloes consist of a carbonated blueschist-facies assemblage (glaucophane + calcite + phengite + epidote + garnet + quartz). These experienced only slight metasomatic changes (i.e. addition of K 2 O and LILE), which cannot alone explain halo formation. We present petrological, geochemical and thermodynamic evidence that this assemblage was preserved at greenschist-facies conditions because X CO2 was elevated by flow of a CO 2 -bearing fluid along the shear zone, which was approximately contemporaneous with greenschist-facies hydration in the surrounding rocks. We further note that the flux of CO 2 -bearing fluid along the shear zone was rapid with respect to the fluid flux in the surrounding rocks. Mass-balance calculations reveal that the fluid flux within the shear zone was at least 100–2000 times greater than the fluid flux within the surrounding rocks. Mineral textures show greenschist-facies minerals replacing blueschist minerals in the type II haloes, supporting our interpretation that the blueschist-facies minerals were preserved during greenschist-facies retrogression. A simplified P–T vs X CO2 pseudosection confirms that preservation of carbonated blueschist can occur at greenschist-facies conditions in the presence of a CO 2 -bearing fluid.

    Description: Analysis of the 18 O and 13 C values of carbonate rocks from Islay, Scotland reveals structural channelling of metamorphic fluids through the axial region of a major en echelon anticlinal fold system. Metamorphic fluid flow produced axial planar veins with higher vein density in the axial region of the fold. Fluid:rock ratios were more than 30:1 within this axial region, at least four times greater than the regional mean ratio of 7·6 ± 1·5:1 for carbonate rocks on Islay. This supports the interpretation that metamorphic fluids were channelled through the axial region of the Islay Anticline. Fluid:rock ratios were calculated using a model for coupled 18 O and 13 C exchange with a metamorphic fluid. The metamorphic fluid was calculated to have 18 O and 13 C values of 15·3 and –6·1, respectively and X CO2 of 0·2. This is in isotopic and chemical equilibrium with chlorite- and graphite-bearing metamudstones that are structurally below the folded metacarbonate rocks on Islay. Devolatilization of these metamudstones is therefore a likely source mechanism for this metamorphic fluid. Removal of the effects of metamorphic fluid flow on 13 C values recorded by metacarbonate rocks on Islay allows us to re-evaluate evidence used to reconstruct Neoproterozoic climate. This evidence includes a large negative 13 C excursion reported from the Lossit Limestone Formation. This unit underlies the Port Askaig Formation, which is dominated by diamictites that have been interpreted as glacial tillites. This ‘Islay anomaly’ has been correlated with other such anomalies worldwide and together with overlying tillites has been cited as evidence of major (worldwide) glaciation events. In this study, we show that the magnitude of this negative 13 C anomaly can partly be explained by exchange with metamorphic fluids. However, we also show that extremely negative 13 C values in the Bonahaven Dolomite Formation, which overlies the Port Askaig Formation and has been interpreted as a ‘cap carbonate’, cannot be attributed to metamorphic fluid flow.

    Description: In summer 2017, the ICDP SUSTAIN project (Surtsey Underwater volcanic System for Thermophiles, Alteration processes and INnovative concretes), drilled three cored boreholes (Table 1) through Surtsey at sites ≤10 m from a cored hole obtained in 1979. Drilling through the still hot volcano was carried out with an Atlas Copco CS1000 drill rig, whose components were transported by helicopter to Surtsey and re-assembled on site. The first vertical borehole, SE-02a, was cored in HQ diameter to 152 meters below surface (m b.s.) during August 7-16. It was terminated due to borehole collapse. A second vertical (SE-02b) cored borehole was then drilled in HQ diameter to 192 m during August 19-26. Wireline borehole logging in SE-02b was performed August 26. The anodized NQ-sized aluminum tubing of the Surtsey Subsurface Observatory was installed in SE-02b to 181 m depth on August 27. A third borehole, SE-03, angled 35° from vertical and directed 264°, was drilled from August 28 to September 4 and reached a measured depth of 354 m (~290 m vertical depth) under the eastern crater. The core is HQ diameter to a measured depth of 213 m and NQ diameter from 213-354 m measured depth. The core traverses the deep conduit and intrusions of the volcano to a total vertical depth of 290 m b.s. Seawater drilling fluid for boreholes SE-02a and SE-02b was filtered and doubly UV-sterilized at the drill site. No mud products were employed while coring SE-02a, while small amounts of attapulgite mud were used in SE-02b and SE-03. Core samples for geochemical analyses of pore water and microbiological investigations were collected on site from all three boreholes. About 650 m of core was transported by helicopter to Heimaey, 18 km northeast of Surtsey, to a processing laboratory where the core was scanned, documented, and described. Additional core processing has taken place at the Náttúrufraedistofnun Íslands, the Icelandic Institute of Natural History in Gardabaer, where both the 1979 and 2017 cores are stored.
