Notes: Abstract The Nankai Trough, off southwest Japan, is one of the best sites for the study of geomorphic characteristics of a clastic accretionary prism. A recent multibeam survey over the central and eastern parts of the Nankai accretionary prism has revealed a large variation of the topography along the trough axis. Analysis of the bathymetric data suggests the existence of prism deformational features of different scales, such as depressions, embayment structures and cusps. These structures are the results of slope instability caused by basement relief of subducted oceanic plate. Unstable slopes recover by new accretion and development of a low angle thrust. Small-scale deformation due to the subduction of a small isolated seamount is then adjusted to the regional trend. By contrast, a 30 km indentation of the wedge observed in the eastern part of the Nankai Trough, the Tenryu Cusp, has seemed to retain its geometry. The subducted Philippine Sea plate has deformed greatly near the eastern end of the Nankai Trough, because of the collision between the Izu-Ogasawara (Bonin) arc and central Japan. Therefore, the indentation may be the result of the continuous subduction of a basement high, such as the Zenisu Ridge, which has been formed under north-south compression due to the arc-arc collision.

Notes: A biological community was discovered in the Northern Okushiri Ridge, northeastern Japan Sea. The community was closely associated with sea-floor fissures, and presumed to be supported by methanotrophic and/or thiotrophic bacterial production. Sediments inside of and in the vicinity of the fissures were collected, and the short-chain (C9–20) sediment fatty acids were analyzed for amounts and compositions. The fatty acid compositions were compared with those from a known methane seep and a submarine volcano in the Sagami Bay, central Japan, and from a whale skeleton at the Torishima Seamount, northwestern Pacific Ocean. As a result, a close relationship between the sediments from the Northern Okushiri Ridge, the known methane-seep, and the whale skeleton was found. This finding represents the first discovery of methane seepage and associated biological communities in the Japan Sea. This also supports the hypothesis that the eastern margin of the northern Japan Sea is at the early stage of new subduction.

Description: Background: Liposomal amphotericin-B (Ambisome ® ) is widely used antifungal drug for treatments of invasive fungal infections. The use of liposomal amphotericin-B is increasing in medical setting because of its tolerability and potent antifungal activity.Case presentationIn a case of a 76 year-old Japanese female was admitted with subarachnoid hemorrhage, the ethnicity of the patient is Asian, we experienced that liposomal amphotericin-B was the culprit drug for Drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome, also known as drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms in view of a clear temporal relationship between liposomal amphotericin-B administration and the onset of symptoms, the remission of the symptomatological pattern after liposomal amphotericin-B withdrawal. Conclusion: The present case report shows that prolonged liposomal amphotericin-B treatment can be associated with drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms. We recommend careful monitoring of neutrophil counts in a prolonged treatment course with liposomal amphotericin-B.

Description: Multi beam bathymetnc survey by Seabeam System and seismic reflection profiling in the Okinawa Trough and the adjacent area. We interpreted seismic profiles in the area west of Tokara volcanic islands to reveal the acoustic stratigraphy in the Okinawa Trough. The strata is divided into the seven formations in ascending order on the basis of these acoustic lithology. Comparison with the driling data in the Yokogansone knoll confirmed that bottom two formations (NiX and OtV) are correlated with Lower Pleistocene or older formations and volcanic rocks. The upper five formations (OtⅣ, OtⅡ, Ot Ⅰ and Eb Ⅰ) are correlated with Upper Pleistocene to the recent.

Description: The Hydrographic Department of Japan has been conducting detailed bathymetric, geological and geophysical survey under the Continental Shelf Surveys Project since 1983.The purpose of this project is to collect basic information on the exclusive economic zone and the continental shelf of Japan and to prepare bathymetric, geological structure, geomagnetic anomaly and gravity anomaly charts at a scale of 1 to 500,000. Bathymetric survey by a multi-narrow beam echo-sounder(Seabeam), seismic reflection profiling, magnetic and gravity measurements were carried out in the survey boxes each covering a 3° latitude by 2.5。longitude. Three boxes of them have been surveyed each year. The average spacing between survey track lines were 5 or 6 nautical miles and areas of special interest were covered by closer track lines. Twenty-three survey boxes in the southern waters of Japan were covered by the end of Fiscal Year 1990. This area covers from west to east, the Okinawa Trough, Ryukyu arc-trench system, Daito Ridge Group, Kyusyu-Palau Ridge, Sikoku Basin, Izu-Ogasawara arc-trench system and Ogasawara Plateau. These systematic surveys has prepared homogeneous and high quality and quantity data in the northern Philippine Sea bordered by the two arc-trench systems. The survey results were compiled in the detailed bathymetric, total magnetic intensity anomaly, Free-air and Bouguer gravity anomaly charts at a scale of 1 to 6,000,000. This paper summarizes the geological and geophysical features revealed mainly by the survey under the Continental Shelf Surveys Project in the southern waters of Japan. Some of the distinct features are (1) Prominent magnetic anomalies along the Quarternary volcanic front of the Ryukyu arc and Izu-Ogasawara arc, and lineated magnetic anomalies characterized by en echelon pattern in the back arc region of the these arcs, (2) Low Bouguer gravity anomalies on the Daito Ridge Group and the Kyusyu-Palau Ridge, indicating thick crustal structures below these ridges compared to those below the surrounding basins, (3) Steep scarps and several dipole-type magnetic anomalies just below the scarps along the eastern edge of the Kyusyu-Palau Ridge, probably caused by the rifting of the arc with some volcanic intrusion prior to the opening of the Sikoku Basin (4) Complicated pattern of lineated magnetic anomalies and well-developed small scale minor ridges and troughs showing three evolutionary stages of sea-floor spreading of the Sikoku Basin, (5) Uplifting and deformation, magnetic anomalies and low Bouguer anomaly zones on the landward slope of the Nanseisyoto Trench and Izu-Ogasawara Trench, caused by the subduction of the western extension of the Amami Plateau and Daito Ridge under the Ryukyu arc, and the western extension of the Ogasawara Plateau under the Izu-Ogasawara arc respectively

Description: The northern margin of the Philippine Sea plate is marked by the Nankai Trough. The trough is known as one of the most active seismogenic zone in the world. However, the basic observations for prediction of giagntic earthquakes such as the detailed distribution of active faults have been lacking mainly due to insufficiency of data of the detailed submarine topography. To make a more precise submarine active fault map along the trough, we have made detailed submarine topographic images based on 3 second (approximately 90 m) DEM processed from the original data obtained by Japan Coast Guard since 1984 using multi−narrow beam echo sounder. Then we have made stereo−pair copies of topographic images for interpretation of active faults, in a similar manner we use in aerial photograph stereo sets for onland active faults. We have also prepared anaglyph images from the stereo−pairs for discussion.

Description: The Oki-Daito Ridge, which is located at the northern end of the West Philippine Basin, has unique topographic character. The ridge extends over 500 km in a straight line from the Ryukyu Trench in northwest to the Kyusyu-Palau Ridge in southeast. The most interesting feature is the narrow trough along the ridge axis, which divides the ridge into two parts, the northern plateaus and the southern sharp ridge. Why does it have such unique form? And what on earth is the Old-Daito Ridge? The Oki Daito Ridge is one of the oldest elements constructing the Philippine Sea Plate, so the origin and the history of this region must be the key to the evolution of the Philippine Sea before Oligocene. In this paper, we make a careful study of topography, geology, gravity, and geomagnetism in the Oki-Daito Ridge region. The data used here were obtained in the Continental Shelf Survey Program. Our data indicate that the Oki Daito Ridge, including the Minami-Daito Basin, is a remnant arc and was formed near the equator in Late Cretaceous to Paleocene. The narrow trough developing along the ridge axis is considered as a left lateral fault, which might be caused by the oblique subduction. The results of the geomagnetic analyses show that the Oki-Daito arc was undergone anticlockwise rotation after its formation and that this region had moved northward. And, the observed data support the idea that the West Philippine Basin had opened as the back arc basin behind the Oki Daito arc system.

Description: In response to the eruption of Miyake-jima volcano starting in June 27, 2000 and the associated swarm earthquakes in the west of lvliyake-jima island, the comprehensive surveys and ocean bottom earthquake observation were conducted by the Japanese Hydrographic Department. Some of the survey results and the derived sub-bottom structure were presented with consideration of teetonics as to the northern part of the Zenisu ridge inferred from geophysical data of topography, magnetic and gravity anomalies covering the northern part of the Izu-shoto region The narrow multi-beam soundings in the west of the Miyake-jima island show the small volcanic cones in the southeast offing of the Kozu sluma island The seismic records proved the existence of many normal faults segmenting the sedimentary layers, which may imply the compressive stress field in NW-SE direction. It is also confirmed that the swarm earthquake region coincides well with the northeastern edge of magnetic basement high. Magnetic basement highs implying the dyke intru sion were also recognized between the Nii-jima and Kozu-shima islands. These features may suggest upwelling of magma through NW SE trending deep fractures caused by regional stress field. The general distribution of magnetic and gravity anomalies covering the northern part of the Izu shoto region, show the good correspondence with the tectonic lines mferred from seismic activity The northern part of the Zenisu ridge has been segmented into three part, Omurodashi ,Ni i jima, and Kozu-shima blocks, and in between there exist magnetic basement highs implying the dyke mtrusion thiough the deep fractures in the crust. The deflection of the major axis of Nii-jima islands is ascribed to the rotational movement caused by the huge dyke intrusions occurred in the east of the island.
