    Notes: To estimate the risk and evaluate the long-term outcome of knee and ankle injuries in former national team elite football, 69 players were randomly selected, followed by clinical and stress radiographic examinations. Thirthy-nine players (49 knees) had had knee injuries and 29 ankle injuries (35 ankles). The median time from injury until study examination was 25 years. The knee injuries were tears of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in 24 cases combined with rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus lesions in three. Meniscus lesions had occurred in 17 cases including three combined with ACL and MCL and another two with ACL ruptures. Isolated rupture of the ACL had occurred in four cases. The ankle lesions were in 26 of 35 cases ruptures of the lateral ligaments. In all, 12 players had completely stopped football and three had changed occupation. Signs of arthritis were present in 63% of the injured knees and in 33% of the injured ankles. The incidence of arthritis in the group of 17 uninjured players was 26% in the knee and 18% the ankle. In elite football players knee and ankle injuries seem to have a serious long-term outcome, but also uninjured players have a higher risk of developing arthritis than the normal population.

    Notes: Temperature modeling around the Vejrum salt structure in Denmark shows that the heat flow near the top is twice the regional heat flow. The temperature in the vicinity of the top of the diapir is thus anomalously high. Overlying permeable formations could therefore be attractive for geothermal energy exploitation. A negative temperature anomaly of −20°C is calculated around the root of the salt body. Comparisons between calculated and measured temperatures are used to test the model. It is shown that measurements of heat flow (or temperature gradients) in wells penetrating the region of groundwater circulation could be used in identification of salt diapirs.

    Notes: The low temperature magnetic properties of the Li2CuO2 compound have been investigated by means of superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. We find in addition to an antiferromagnetic phase below 9.5 K a ferromagnetic-like steep rise of the magnetization around 2.8 K. The observed low temperature behavior is discussed by considering second and fourth order magnetocrystalline effective anisotropy coefficients, in addition to the exchange couplings reported in the literature. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The effect of the interlayer exchange interaction Jinter in coupled Co/Cu/Ni trilayers is studied theoretically, as motivated by recent experiments. In these systems, Jinter induces a considerable Ni magnetization for temperatures above the Curie temperature TC,Ni of the Ni film. We will show that this strong effect can only be understood if magnetic fluctuations in these 2D-like systems are taken into account. A mean field estimate, neglecting these fluctuations, yields a ten times smaller increase of the Ni magnetization. The induced magnetization increases for both a ferromagnetic (Jinter〉0) and an antiferromagnetic (Jinter〈0) interlayer coupling. The Ni susceptibility, exhibiting a resonance-like peak at T(approximately-greater-than)TC,Ni, looks different for these two cases. The calculations are performed with the help of a Heisenberg Hamiltonian and a Green's function approach. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The current effort to fabricate nonvolatile magnetic recording media with a high areal density is deteriorated by the increasing temporal instability of the stored information. If the stored energy per magnetic particle competes with the thermal energy, spontaneous magnetic reversal processes may occur. Deposition of the magnetic particles on top of an antiferromagnetic substrate will increase its energy barrier due to the exchange coupling between the two subsystems. For this, the magnetic moments of the antiferromagnet in the vicinity of the magnetic particle have to deviate from their undisturbed arrangement. This disturbance vanishes within a few lattice constants. In the framework of a classical spin model, we calculate the spin arrangements and the resulting energy barriers for typical systems. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report 2 cases of an avulsion fracture of the medial humerus epicondyle in teenage wrestlers. Two youngsters (13 and 14 years of age) who both competed in the Danish national championship in wrestling avulsed their medial humerus epicondyle. Both were operated on, and the medial humerus epicondyle was reinserted and fixed. The postoperative results were good, as both patients achieved a normal range of motion. To prevent injuries, we recommended that children who begin to wrestle be taught correct falling techniques. Open reduction and internal fixation of the avulsed medial humerus epicondyle is mandatory to guarantee a good final result without permanent disability, and the early and correct diagnosis k therefore of importance.

    Notes: We studied the performance and proprioception of the knee joint in a group of non-reconstructed anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)-deficient (n=20) patients and compared them with a group of ACL-reconstructed patients (n=18) and a group of healthy controls (n=20). Each patient was scored according to Lysholm and Tegner and was then asked to subjectively evaluate the performance of the injured knee and the degree of retropatellar discomfort. The knee joint laxity was measured. The performance was assessed based on the performance in a triple jump test and a one-leg one-step leap test. The proprioception in the knee was measured as the threshold when passive movement was detected and as the ability to reproduce a flexion angle from a start position of 60° of flexion or from full extension of the knee. All tests were performed on both legs. The scoring systems and the subjective evaluation showed significant differences between the reconstructed and the non-reconstructed patients. No significant difference in knee joint laxity was found between the two groups. In the triple jump test and the one-step leap test, both groups performed significantly worse on the leg with the injured knee joint than on the non-injured leg. The proprioceptive tests showed decreased ability to recognize and reproduce a prior angle from a start position of 60°. The threshold to detection of passive movement with the injured knee was significantly increased in both groups of patients. No difference was found between the dominant and non-dominant knee in the control group. When reproduction of the same angles started from full extension, the groups did not differ. These data show that decreased performance and changes in the proprioception of the knee joint accompany ACL rupture.

    Notes: In recent years there has been a growing awareness of the possible hazards caused by anaesthetic gases in operating theatres. The laryngeal mask airway provides an alternative both to tracheal intubation and the face mask although the implications for operating theatre contamination have not been quantified. This paper describes the incidence and magnitude of exposure of theatre personnel to waste anaesthetic gases during laryngeal mask airway anaesthesia. The leakage of anaesthetic gases to the anaesthetist's breathing zone was monitored using a Bruel & Kjaer Multi Gas Monitor, Type 1302 during 50 general anaesthetics employing either spontaneous (n = 24) or controlled (n = 26) ventilation. All patients were anaesthetised with propofol, alfentanil and nitrous oxide. There was no statistically significant association between the amount of anaesthetic gas leakage and ventilation method. The laryngeal mask airway meets occupational safety requirements on nitrous oxide concentrations in the operating theatre environment.
