Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: The aim of this book is to review and analyse the goods and services of bivalve shellfish. How they are defined, what determines the ecological functions that are the basis for the goods and services, what controversies in the use of goods and services exist, and what is needed for sustainable exploitation of bivalves from the perspective of the various stakeholders. The book is focused on the goods and services, and not on impacts of shellfish aquaculture on the benthic environment, or on threats like biotoxins; neither is it a shellfish culture handbook although it can be used in evaluating shellfish culture. The reviews and analysis are based on case studies that exemplify the concept, and show the strengths and weaknesses of the current applications. The multi-authored reviews cover ecological, economic and social aspects of bivalve goods and services. The book provides new insights for scientists, students, shellfish producers, policy advisors, nature conservationists and decision makers. This book is open access under the CC BY license

Notizen: Abstract. Coiled bodies and interchromatin granules are distinct subnuclear domains that contain splicing small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs) and protein-splicing factors. Here we have studied the morphogenesis of coiled bodies and clusters of interchromatin granules in relation to the onset of transcriptional activity in early hamster embryos. The results indicate that major embryonic transcription by RNA polymerase II is first detected during the early two-cell stage (15–20 h post-fertilization), whereas RNA polymerase I activity and nucleologenesis are only observed in late two-cell embryos (30–40 h postfertilization). Splicing snRNPs and heterogeneous nuclear RNP (hnRNP) proteins are shown to be imported into the pronuclei following fertilization, and prominent clusters of interchromatin granules containing the splicing factor SC-35 are already observed in both maternal and paternal pronuclei of one-cell embryos. Interestingly, these large clusters of interchromatin granules do not appear to concentrate splicing snRNPs. In contrast, coiled bodies are first detected during the two-cell stage after the onset of transcription, and they are clearly enriched in snRNPs. Taken together with results previously obtained in mouse embryos, these data suggest that the assembly of coiled bodies and clusters of interchromatin granules is independent from the onset of embryonic transcriptional activity, and that coiled bodies represent the major snRNP-enriched subnuclear domain in the early mammalian embryo.

Beschreibung: In the present study, we collected data on biofouling in 17 marinas along the Baltic Sea coast during three consecutive boating seasons (May-October 2014, 2015 and 2016). In this context, we compared different monitoring strategies and developed a fouling index (FI) to characterise marinas according to the recorded biofouling abundance and type (defined according to the hardness and strength of attachment to the substrate). Lower FI values, i.e. softer and/or less abundant biofouling, were consistently observed in marinas in the north-eastern Baltic Sea. The decrease in FI from the south-western to the north-eastern Baltic Sea was partially explained by the concomitant decrease in salinity. Nevertheless, most of the observed changes in biofouling seemed to be determined by local factors and inter-annual variability, which emphasizes the necessity for systematic monitoring of biofouling by end-users and/or authorities for the effective implementation of non-toxic antifouling alternatives in marinas.
