    Description / Table of Contents: The hydrography of the Laptev Sea is significantly influenced by river water and sea-ice processes, which are highly variable over the annual cycle. Despite of an estuarine structure the inner and outer shelf regions are decoupled at times as documented by the stability of a warm intermediate layer formed during summer below the Lena River plume. We demonstrate that a remnant of this warm layer is preserved below the fast ice until the end of winter, while only slightly farther to the north, offshore of the landfast ice in the polynya region, the pycnocline is eroded and no signature of this layer is found. The warm intermediate layer (WIL) formed during summer can be used as tracer for Laptev Sea shelf waters throughout the winter. Thereby, residence times of southern Laptev Sea waters can be estimated to be at least from summer to the end of winter/spring of the following year.

    Description / Table of Contents: γ-radiolysis of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and chlorosubstituted poly(methacrylates) gives radicals with comparable nine-line-EPR spectra. The transformations of the molecules were discussed in light of the quantitative differences in the accumulation processes. EPR-spectra at liquid helium temperatures confirm the hypothesis of allyl radical accumulation in PMMA.

    Description: The long-term data sets of total alkalinity (TA) (1929–2002 A.D.) and δ18O (1966–2002 A.D.) are used to investigate freshwater and brine distributions in the Arctic Ocean. Fractions of sea ice meltwater and other freshwaters (OF) (precipitation, river runoff, and freshwater carried by Pacific water implied as salinity deficit) are calculated on the basis of salinity-TA and salinity-δ18O relationships. Rejected brine during sea ice growth resides in surface water in the central Arctic Ocean, while net melting is found along the surface flow of water from the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Distribution of OF at 10 m water depth suggests that Russian runoff leaves the shelf mainly west of the Mendeleyev Ridge, enters into the deep basin, and exits from the ocean through the western part of Fram Strait. The influence of Mackenzie River water is limited in the region and in depth. Accumulation of freshwater in the Canadian Basin is caused by deep penetration of OF with brine, indicating the transport of freshwater by shelf-derived water. The major origin of shelf-derived water entering into the upper halocline layer in the Canadian Basin should be the Chukchi and East Siberian Sea shelves, and the main freshwater sources are the salinity deficit of Pacific water and/or Russian runoff. An increase in OF inventory accompanied by an increase in brine content may suggest an increase of the shelf-derived water supply into the western Canadian Basin in anticyclonic years.

    Description: There is growing concern about the rapidity and extent of climate change in recent decades in the Arctic. The changes already evident in the Arctic, such as the cyclonic shift in the distribution of Atlantic and Pacific water masses, atmospheric pressure and winds, as well as the thinning and retreat of the sea ice, will be felt first and most dramatically around the circum-Arctic shelves, which comprise nearly 50% of the area of the Arctic Ocean. In this context, the Laptev Sea and its Siberian hinterland are of particular interest because of their distance both from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. River discharge into the Laptev Sea constitutes a key source for the Arctic freshwater input, and it generates a shallow brackish layer on top of the halocline. The shallow Laptev Sea shelf is a major area of sea-ice production that links the Siberian shelves of the Arctic Ocean with the Nordic seas. During the Last Glacial Maximum, most of these shelves were above sea level and developed thick permafrost sequences; today they are submarine, after having experienced the postglacial late Pleistocene and Holocene transgression. The history of the submarine permafrost and its modern state of decay are largely unknown.

    Description: Russian and German scientists have investigated the extreme environmental system in and around the Laptev Sea in the Siberian Arctic. For the first time a major comprehensive research program combining the efforts of several projects addressed both oceanic and terrestrial processes, and their consequences for marine and terrestrial biota, landscape evolution as well as land-ocean interactions. The primary scientific goal of the multidisciplinary program was to decipher past climate variations and their impact on contemporary environmental changes. Extensive studies of the atmosphere, sea ice, water column, and sea-floor on the Laptev Sea Shelf, as well as of the vegetation, soil development, carbon cycle, permafrost behaviour and lake hydrology, and sedimentationon Taymyr Peninsula and Severnaya Zemlya Archipelago were performed during the past years under a framework of joint research activities. They included land and marine expeditions during spring (melting), summer (ice free), and autumn (freezing) seasons. The close bilateral cooperation between many institutions in Russia and Germany succeeded in drawing a picture of important processes shaping the marine and terrestrial environment in northern Central Siberia in Late Quaternary time. The success of the projects, which ended in late 1997, resulted in the definition and establishment of a new major research effort which will concentrate on establishing a better understanding of the paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental record of the area. This is important because it allows to be able to judge rates and extremes of potential future environmental changes.

    Description: The Kara Sea, due to its geographic location downstream of the main eastward Atlantic Water inflow through the Barents Sea, is strongly influenced by the history of the Atlantic Water masses which enter at its western entrances: the Kara Strait and the passage between Franz Josef Land and Novaya Semlya. Little is known about the interannual variability of temperature, salinity and volume fluxes through these entrances.The present investigation analyzes model results from 1979 to 1999 and compares them to hydrographic observations in the Barents and Kara seas with respect to the interannual variability of Atlantic Water flow through the western entrances of the Kara Sea. Model results and observations suggest the propagation of sequences of warm and cold anomalies through the area of investigation. Most prominent are anomalously cold years 1986, 1993 and 1998 for the Kara Strait throughflow which are associated with weak eastward or even westward flow over periods up to several months. For the passage between Franz Josef Land and Novaya Semlya, the entire period of the 1990s is characterized by warm deep water temperatures. In the early and late 1990s also the eastward volume fluxes are at their maximum. We discuss an Empirical Orthogonal Function analysis of the velocity in the Barents and Kara Seas. The warm and cold phases are associated with the first two modes of the velocity pattern in the domain. The links of these velocity patterns with the large scale sea level pressure are discussed.
