Notes: Abstract Many plants react to pollutants in the atmosphere andcan consequentely be used to examine air quality.A distinction is made between bioindicator, bioaccumulator and hiperaccumulator and biomonitorplants. Given the encouraging results of a study to monitorstress caused by pollution in the city of Palermo(Sicily), we decided to carry out a survey ofpollutants, by examining some “passive bioindicatorplants”, which grow naturally or which had long agobeen planted in the city. The species chosen were:Eucaliptus camaldulensis Dehnh.; Pinuspinea L.; Platanus hybrida Brot, examples ofwhich are found all over the city. Biostructural and spectrophotometry analyses werecarried out on the leaf and pollen samples, payingparticular attention to lead. Most damage (cytologicalalterations and lead accumulation) was found in thepine; morphological and cytological parameters arehighly unspecific but positively correlated with leadpresence in plant structures.

Notes: Abstract Edible plants can be contaminated by air diffused pollutants. Research on stress caused by pollutants, which involves the biomonitoringof ornamental trees in the city of Palermo, including Citrus fruits, which are of considerable importance in Sicily's agricultural economy andagroindustrial programmes, has been carried out.Morphological observations of ornamental Citrus revealed anevergreen foliage and excellent leaf characteristics, even in environmentalcontexts where other plant species were found to have undergone morpho-anatomical changes.Stress symptoms related to the presence of lead which, supposedly, couldhave been absorbed by the pericarp or by the pulp of the navel orangebrasiliano N.L. 92 and 2 grapefruit cultivars were observed. Fruits, sections of pulp and leaves of brasiliano oranges collected from thefield in Lascari (Palermo, 38° N) of the “Centro di studio per ilmiglioramento genetico degli agrumi” (C.N.R. Palermo) and from theexperimental sites of the Faculty of Agriculture in the Parco d'Orleans inPalermo were compared. Fruits of the cultivars Ruby Red Star and Marshpicked from the field located in the Parco d'Orleans were also objects ofobservation.Lead, iron, manganese and copper were measured by atomic absorptionspectrophotometry and we conclude that, in these particular cultivationconditions, the brasiliano orange would not appear to be a suitable markerspecies and seems to be safe for agro-alimentary use.

Description: The aim of this study was to obtain information on the presence and levels of hazardous organic pollutants in groundwater located close to solid waste landfills. Eighty-two environmental contaminants, including 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 20 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), 29 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 7 dioxins (polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, PCDDs) and 10 furans (polychlorinated dibenzofurans, PCDFs) were monitored in areas characterised by different geological environments surrounding three municipal solid waste landfills (Palermo, Siculiana and Ragusa) in Sicily (Italy) in three sampling campaigns. The total concentrations of the 16 PAHs were always below the legal threshold. Overall, the Fl/Fl + Py diagnostic ratio revealed that PAHs had a petrogenic origin. VOC levels, except for two notable exceptions near Palermo landfill, were always below the legal limit. As concerns PCB levels, several samples were found positive with levels exceeding the legal limits. It is worth noting that the % PCB distribution differs from that of commercial compositions. In parallel, some samples of groundwater containing PCDDs and PCDFs exceeding the legal threshold were also found. Among the 17 congeners monitored, the most abundant were the highest molecular weight ones.
