Notes: It is theoretically demonstrated that mode locked operation can be achieved in a closed cavity electron cyclotron maser (gyrotron). This work is unique in two respects. First, the cavity provides a highly dispersive guiding structure for the electromagnetic wave, hence, the mode frequency spacing varies by an amount comparable to the average spacing between modes. The dispersive properties of the electron beam are used to compensate that of the cavity to allow eight longitudinal TE11n modes to lock together. Second, the locking is obtained by rf modulation of the axial velocity of the electron beam. A numerical example shows that subnanosecond radiation pulses can be generated at 16 GHz with an order of magnitude increase in power level over the free-running maser.

Notes: Experimental observation of pulsed radiation ranging from ∼20 GHz to above 100 GHz during the hollow cathode discharge phase of operation of a back-lighted thyratron is reported. The discharge is operated with 120 mTorr Ar gas at 20 kV initial voltage. Pulsed radiation was observed for ∼50 ns, and an electron beam with energy of ∼20 keV was also observed. The observations are correlated with plasma processes predicted in recent computer simulations. The sudden turn-off of the radiation is believed to be a result of plasma expansion and sheath contraction inside the hollow cathode region. A method for varying the pulse length is discussed.

Notes: Nonlinear, time-dependent calculations have been carried out for closed-cavity gyrotron oscillations using a strongly modulated electron beam. It is found that radiation pulses of width 200 ps can be generated with carrier frequency of 18 GHz at over 10% efficiency. The gyrotron features a tapered wall radius to allow an equidistant spectrum of cavity modes. Evidence of a disruption in locking is found at electron beam currents several times the start oscillation value. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: : We determined the relationship between textural property of legume curds and constituents of their proteins. The hardness, springiness, and cohesiveness of curds prepared from soybeans, chickpeas, and fava beans were 6.0 to 9.4 N, 0.93 to 0.95, and 0.67 to 0.77, respectively, higher than those of curds made from smooth peas, mung beans, and lentils, which were 4.2 to 4.9 N, 0.92, and 0.57 to 0.59, respectively. Soybeans, chickpeas, and fava beans had a higher proportion of 11S globulin and a lower proportion of 7S globulin than lentils, smooth peas, and mung beans. Soybeans, chickpeas, and fava beans produced a better texture of curd than did lentils, smooth peas, and mung beans, due to a higher proportion of 11S proteins.

Notes: Abstract Pelvis-shoulder dysplasia is rare skeletal dysplasia characterised by symmetrical hypoplasia of the iliac wings and scapulae. It may be associated with unstable hips in infancy, a prominent lumbar lordosis and a waddling gait. Symptoms tend to lessen with increasing age. A child with this condition who has been followed up to the age of five years is described. Her pelvic dysplasia is milder than in previous cases and has caused no disability. Minor skeletal abnormalities are also present in the lumbar spine, femora and rib cage. Radiography of other members of the family was normal.

Notes: Summary Anal portography has been employed in the investigation of patients with portal hypertension and previous splenectomy. The method was successful in 6 of the 9 cases in which the attempt was made, and there were no postoperative complications.

Notes: Abstract Crystals that have sufficient elastic anisotropy can exhibit cuspidal features in the group-velocity surface so that the group velocity is double- or triple-valued. In nonpiezoelectric crystals such cuspidal features occur only in the quasi-transverse (QT) modes when the wave vectors are restricted to the symmetry planes of the crystal. Sufficient piezoelectric stiffening of the elastic constants, however, can generate cuspidal features in other modes when the wave vectors are restricted to these same symmetry planes. In barium sodium niobate (BSN) there is insufficient elastic anisotropy to generate cuspidal features when piezoelectric stiffening is neglected. The addition of piezoelectric stiffening changes only the quasi-longitudinal (QL) and QT modes in the (100) and (010) planes, and changes only the pure transverse (T) mode in the (001) plane. There is sufficient piezoelectric stiffening, however, to generate small cuspidal features in the QL mode about the [001] and $$[00\bar 1]$$ axes in the (100) and (010) planes. In Rochelle salt, however, there is sufficient elastic anisotropy to generate cuspidal features in the QT modes about collinear axes along nonsymmetry directions in the (100) and (010) planes. The addition of piezoelectric stiffening changes only the T mode in the (100), (010) and (001) symmetry planes. This piezoelectric stiffening is large enough, however, to generate large cupsidal features in the T mode about new collinear axes along nonsymmetry directions in the (010) and (001) planes.

Description: Reliable statements about variability and change in marine ecosystems and their underlying causes are needed to report on their status and to guide management. Here we use the Framework on Ocean Observing (FOO) to begin developing ecosystem Essential Ocean Variables (eEOVs) for the Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS). An eEOV is a defined biological or ecological quantity, which is derived from field observations, and which contributes significantly to assessments of Southern Ocean ecosystems. Here, assessments are concerned with estimating status and trends in ecosystem properties, attribution of trends to causes, and predicting future trajectories. eEOVs should be feasible to collect at appropriate spatial and temporal scales and are useful to the extent that they contribute to direct estimation of trends and/or attribution, and/or development of ecological (statistical or simulation) models to support assessments. In this paper we outline the rationale, including establishing a set of criteria, for selecting eEOVs for the SOOS and develop a list of candidate eEOVs for further evaluation. Other than habitat variables, nine types of eEOVs for Southern Ocean taxa are identified within three classes: state (magnitude, genetic/species, size spectrum), predator–prey (diet, foraging range), and autecology (phenology, reproductive rate, individual growth rate, detritus). Most candidates for the suite of Southern Ocean taxa relate to state or diet. Candidate autecological eEOVs have not been developed other than for marine mammals and birds.Wec onsider some of the spatial and temporal issues that will influence the adoption and use of eEOVs in an observing system in the Southern Ocean, noting that existing operations and platforms potentially provide coverage of the four main sectors of the region—the East and West Pacific, Atlantic and Indian. Lastly, we discuss the importance of simulation modelling in helping with the design of the observing system in the long term. Regional boundary: south of 30°S.
