    Publication Date: 2023-01-30
Description: For each tsunami earthquake region, ship-based bathymetric data have been collated from German (http://www.bsh.de), French (http://en.data.ifremer.fr), Japanese (http://www.godac.jamstec.go.jp/darwin/e) and US (http://www.rvdata.us) research cruises as well as the compilation of data provided by the Global Multi-Resolution Topography (GMRT) synthesis (https://www.gmrt.org). The ship-based bathymetric soundings were quality checked and manually edited if necessary. The collated data is displayed on top of the SRTM15+ grid (https://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/srtm). For the New Zealand margin the collated data is displayed on top of the nationwide bathymetric compilation provided by The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) (https://www.niwa.co.nz/our-science/oceans/bathymetry).

In:  Supplement to: Völker, David; Scholz, Florian; Geersen, Jacob (2011): Analysis of submarine landsliding in the rupture area of the 27 February 2010 Maule earthquake, Central Chile. Marine Geology, 288(1-4), 79-89, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.margeo.2011.08.003
    Publication Date: 2023-10-28
Description: The comparison of bathymetric datasets compiled before and after the Mw = 8.8 Maule Earthquake of the 27 February 2010 offshore Central Chile proves that no new submarine landslides on a size scale detectable with hull-mounted bathymetric echosounders (features of a horizontal size of 〉 1 km) formed as a direct consequence of the ground shaking. Gravity coring around a pre-existing slide feature offshore Concepción (BioBio Slide), however, documents that (1) a number of events occurred as retrogressive failures of the BioBio Slide wall, the youngest of which is 700?1000 years old, and that (2) a very recent small scale slide structure resulted from non-destructive imbricate stacking of a thin sediment layer. Pore water geochemical data show that this event post-dates the Maule Earthquake, suggesting that it was triggered by one of the numerous aftershocks. The absence of larger failures and the presence of a small slide let us propose that in contrast to apparent logic, frequent violent earthquakes at convergent margins do not necessarily pose a particular tsunami risk by landslides. The frequent shaking might even limit the slide volume and therefore their tsunami hazard, as instead of rare and large slides, frequent smaller slides are induced.

Description: Multibeam bathymetric data were acquired during R/V SONNE Cruises SO104, SO244, and R/V Marcus G. Langseth Cruise MGL1610. The datasets were individually processed and gridded with grid cell sizes of 75 m. For the combined grid, depth information from SO244 was used wherever possible. If no SO244 data were available, MGL1610 data were preferred over SO104 data. The backscatter data were collected during R/V SONNE Cruise SO244. For processing of the backscatter information, all data recorded during turns of the ship were eliminated before gridding to a 20 m cell size throughout the study area.

Description: Raw multibeam bathymetry data were collected aboard RV MARIA S. MERIAN during cruise MSM113 using a Kongsberg EM 122 multibeam echosounder. The expedition took place during 09.12.22-12.01.2023 from Las Palmas, Spain to Las Palmas, Spain in the Central Atlantic Ocean. Data were recorded off the NW-African continental margin and West of La Palma. The main aim of MSM113 was to realise an interdisciplinary approach, including a variety of geophysical, geological, geotechnical and oceanographic methods, to study processes that lead to the formation of large fields of sediment waves at the Northwest African margin. Sound velocity profiles (SVP) were applied on the data for calibration. Please see the cruise report for details. The data are unprocessed and can therefore contain incorrect depth measurements (artifacts) if not further processed. Note that refraction errors may occur when no proper SVP is applied. Provision of the data is part of the DAM Underway Project.
