    Description: A lowerable acoustic wideband autonomous transceiver (WBAT) was deployed during the 2020 SUMMER (Sustainable Management of Mesopelagic Resources) Mediterranean cruise (30 September 2020 to 18 October 2020) aboard the R/V Sarmiento de Gamboa. In total 31 drops were conducted with a depth range from 0 to 500 m to make close up broadband observations of scattering layers. Some of the deployments were done in parallel to ship-based stationary EK80 recordings in fequency modulated mode. There were 4 transducers (with nominal frequencies at 38, 120, 200 and 333 kHz) used with a frequency band covering 35 to 445 kHz. A maximum volume of 100 MB per individual raw file was used, and the recording range was set to 100 m for all frequencies. Transmitted power for 4 transducers from 38 to 333 kHz was set to 225, 125, 75 and 25 W, respectively. Calibration data were recorded in part of the deployments using a 33 mm tungsten sphere. Raw power (W), number of transducer segments and transceiver impedance (Ohm) were stored in raw proprietary Simrad format (.raw). The raw files were recorded according to the UTC-01:00 time zone, the metadata below use UTC+00:00.

    Description: EK80 raw broadband stationary observations were made during the 2020 SUMMER (Sustainable Management of Mesopelagic Resources) Mediterranean cruise (30 September 2020 to 18 October 2020) aboard the RV Sarmiento de Gamboa. A hull-mounted EK80 system (with nominal frequencies of 18, 38, 70, 120, 200 kHz) was operated on frequency modulated (FM) mode with specific settings. In total, 22 deployments were collected along with the wideband autonomous transceiver (WBAT) observations to maximise the frequency band range and compare to the WBAT data. A maximum volume of 100 MB per individual raw file was used. The recording depth for 5 frequencies was set to 500 m. The transmitted power for 5 frequencies from 18 to 200 kHz were set to 2000, 1000, 750, 250, 150 W according to the published papers. Raw power (W), number of transducer segments and transceiver impedance (Ohm) were stored in raw proprietary Simrad format (.raw). The raw files were all recorded according to the UTC+00:00 time zone. Data format and calibrations are the same as for the EK80 underway narrowband data.

    Description: These data consist of both underway and station echosounder observations collected during the 2020 SUMMER (Sustainable Management of Mesopelagic Resources) Mediterranean cruise (30 September 2020 to 18 October 2020) on the RV Sarmiento de Gamboa. Narrowband (18, 38, 70, 120, 200 kHz) underway acoustic data were collected continuously using hull-mounted Simrad EK80 echosounders. The recording depths for the 5 frequencies were 1000, 1000, 750, 500, and 200 m respectively. Calibrations were carried out on the 1st of October 2020 using a 33 mm tungsten sphere,and the calibration results were applied to the instruments. During the survey, a Simrad wideband autonomous receiver (WBAT) was deployed down to a depth of 500 m whilst on station. In total, 31 drops were carried out at 5 stations. Four transducers (central frequencies were 45, 120, 200, 333 kHz) were operated using the WBAT in frequency modulated (FM) mode (bandwidth ranging from 45 to 445 kHz). The WBAT calibration data were collected using a 33 mm tungsten sphere. During the deployment of the WBAT, the hull-mounted EK80 was switched to FM mode to record broadband measurements. Raw power (W), number of transducer segments and transceiver impedance (Ohm) were stored in raw proprietary Simrad format (.raw, .idx).

    Description: These data consist of raw echosounder observations collected during the Malaspina 2010 Spanish Circumnavigation Expedition (14th December 2010, Cádiz-14th July 2011, Cartagena). The cruise was divided into seven legs: leg 1 (14th December 2010, Cádiz-13th January 2011, Rio de Janeiro), leg 2 (17th January 2011, Rio de Janeiro-6th February 2011, Cape Town), leg 3 (11th February 2011, Cape Town-13th March 2011, Perth), leg 4 (17th March 2011, Perth-30th March 2011, Sydney), leg 5 (16th April 2011, Auckland-8th May 2011, Honolulu), leg 6 (13th May 2011, Honolulu-10th June 2011, Cartagena de Indias) and leg 7 (19th June 2011, Cartagena de Indias-14th July 2011, Cartagena). Echosounder observations were made from the BIO Hespérides (A-33) using two EK60 GPTs operating two hull-mounted transducers (38 and 120 kHz). A calibration was carried out prior to the start of the expedition (30th of November 2010, close to Mazarron port, water temperature c. 17 degrees C) and values of the peak transducer gain and Simrad correction factor for both frequencies were updated in the ER60 software. Data are stored in raw proprietary Simrad (Bergen, Norway) format (.raw, .idx, .bot files).

    Notes: Abstract The Antarctic euphausiids Euphausia superba and E. crystallorophias were sampled using an 8 m2 rectangular midwater trawl inside the caldera of Deception Island. Specimens of the same species were collected on the same day from the strandline and sublittoral fringe within the caldera at a bay where these euphausiids had been incapacitated by high temperature geothermally heated waters. Differences between length frequency distributions of samples obtained by both methods were investigated once net-caught specimens had been subject to the simulated effects of geothermally heated waters. Differences between maturity stage/sex ratios for E. superba samples were also assessed. No significant differences between sizes of net-caught or beach-sampled E. crystallorophias were detected, but significant differences were found between both the sizes and sex/maturity stages for E. superba samples. Possible explanations for these differences are discussed.

    Description: Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, supports a valuable commercial fishery in the Southwest Atlantic, which holds the highest krill densities and is warming rapidly. The krill catch is increasing, is concentrated in a small area, and has shifted seasonally from summer to autumn/winter. The fishery is managed by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, with the main goal of safeguarding the large populations of krill-dependent predators. Here we show that, because of the restricted distribution of successfully spawning krill and high inter-annual variability in their biomass, the risk of direct fishery impacts on the krill stock itself might be higher than previously thought. We show how management benefits could be achieved by incorporating uncertainty surrounding key aspects of krill ecology into management decisions, and how knowledge can be improved in these key areas. This improved information may be supplied, in part, by the fishery itself.

    Description: Krill and salps are important for carbon flux in the Southern Ocean, but the extent of their contribution and the consequences of shifts in dominance from krill to salps remain unclear. We present a direct comparison of the contribution of krill and salp faecal pellets (FP) to vertical carbon flux at the Antarctic Peninsula using a combination of sediment traps, FP production, carbon content, microbial degradation, and krill and salp abundances. Salps produce 4-fold more FP carbon than krill, but the FP from both species contribute equally to the carbon flux at 300 m, accounting for 75% of total carbon. Krill FP are exported to 72% to 300 m, while 80% of salp FP are retained in the mixed layer due to fragmentation. Thus, declining krill abundances could lead to decreased carbon flux, indicating that the Antarctic Peninsula could become a less efficient carbon sink for anthropogenic CO2 in future.
