Notes: Abstract— Tryptophan, 5-hydroxytryptamine and 5-hydroindoleacetic acid were found to be greatly increased in various parts of the brains of rats in acute hepatic failure following two stage hepatic devascularization. However, the increases in 5-hydroxytryptamine and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid varied by region and are not explicable solely in terms of increased concentrations of tryptophan. The results are discussed in terms of differences in the regional metabolism of 5-hydroxyindoleamines. Plasma free fatty acids, albumin, total tryptophan and free tryptophan were measured in plasma in hopes of elucidating the mechanism responsible for the cerebral elevation of tryptophan. Increased plasma free tryptophan appears sufficient to explain the rapid increase in brain tryptophan. The relationship between these results and recent observations in hepatic encephalopathy is discussed.

Notes: Abstract— Four weeks after portacaval anastomosis in the rat. a profound change in the pattern of the plasma neutral ammo acids occurred. These changes were accompanied by marked regional changes in brain trvptophan. 5-HT (5-hydroxytryptamine) and 5-HIAA (5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid). Tryptophan was elevated in all the regions studied as was 5-HIAA. 5-Hydroxytryptamine was significantly elevated only in midbrain and medulla pons. A small but significant increase in free trvptophan concentration in plasma was seen in rats following portacaval anastomosis, but this elevation was insufficient in magnitude to account for thc changes in brain trvptophan. Administration of a solution containing equimolar concentrations of the three branched-chain amino acids, leucine. isoleucine and valine. caused a decrease in brain indoles towards normal levels. These results suggest that the altered plasma neutral amino acid pattern which accompanies portacaval anastomosis and its effect on competitive amino acid transport across the blood brain barrier is an important factor contributing to the raised levels of indoles in brain under these circumstances. The relationship of these results to the recently reported use of amino acid infusions in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy is discussed.

Notes: Abstract— Following portacaval anastomosis in the rat, plasma and brain tyrosine are markedly elevated, although brain tyrosine is increased to a significantly greater degree than plasma tyrosine. Both plasma and brain tyrosine as well as brain octopamine correlated well with a presumed index of impaired hepatic function, the ratio of liver weight to body weight in shunted rats. A significant positive correlation was observed between brain octopamine and brain tyrosine. The significance of these findings to the etiology and treatment of clinical hepatic encephalopathy is discussed.

Notes: The BNL low-angle spectrometer was designed and constructed to accommodate a variety of low- and medium-angle experiments in molecular biology. This spectrometer incorporates a 3He two-dimensional position-sensitive counter. Multilayers or conventional crystals are used as monochromators.

Notes: The dark flesh of mullet (Mugil cephalus) was compared with beef muscle for total iron, total hemoprotein, and total nonheme iron. Mullet dark flesh contained 57.3 ppm iron, over twice the amount in beef, 26.0 ppm. Total possible nonheme iron content of mullet dark flesh ranged from 56–75%, compared to 11–29% for beef. In a linoleate emulsion model system, mullet dark flesh homogenate was analyzed for heme and nonheme iron activity as lipid oxidation catalysts. Addition of ascorbic acid, EDTA, and cyanide, at different pH levels, indicated the nature of the catalyses. Of the additives, cyanide yielded the strongest inhibition on a molar basis. Based on the criteria of other researchers, these data suggest that heme iron is the major catalyst of lipid oxidation in mullet flesh. The rates of O2 uptake by mullet dark flesh homogenate and by Fe/EDTA increased with increasing acidity, rather than exhibiting a previously reported peak at pH 5.5. The latter appears to be a phenomenon of limited occurrence rather than a general test criteria. In light of this finding, the nature and nomenclature of biological nonheme iron is discussed.

Notes: Summary GABA, when applied locally, acted similarly on both primary and mirror cortical focus: the negative component of the spike discharge was suppressed or inverted in polarity, whereas the late slow negative wave was strongly potentiated. Recordings from deep cortical layers suggested a different origin of these 2 surface-negative components of focal discharges.

Notes: Summary The leading symptom of primary hyperparathyroidism is renal lithiasis which was present in 64 of 100 cases, whereas bone disease was noted in 11 per cent only. The diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism is generally made on the basis of raised serum levels of calcium and of immunoreactive parathyroid hormone (PTH). With antibodies detecting primarily COOH-terminal fragments of intact PTH-(1-84) there was an almost total discrimination of serum levels of PTH in normal subjects and in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. Serum PTH was in the upper normal range in only 5 per cent of 128 patients with surgically verified hyperparathyroidism, whereas PTH was normal or undetectable in 35 hypercalcaemic patients with tumours unrelated to the parathyroid glands. A comparable discrimination of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism from normal subjects can be achieved with the measurement of the urinary cyclic adenosine 3′, 5′-monophosphate excretion, provided it is related to the glomerular filtration rate. With the measurement of the urinary excretion of calcium and phosphate, on the other hand, there is a large overlap in control subjects and in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. The surgical removal of parathyroid tumours is the treatment of choice of primary hyperparathyroidism. In the routine preoperative evaluation, we do not recommend PTH measurements in the venous effluent of parathyroid tumours, since all parathyroid glands have to be surgically localized. In previously explored patients the interpretation of selective PTH measurements is difficult because of distorsion of the venous drainage from the parathyroid glands.

Notes: Abstract The role of the Froissart-Martin bound in obtaining rigorous phase-modulus asymptotic correlations for forward scattering is examined. A general form of the asymptotic upper bound on the total cross sectionσ covering the majority of cases occuring in weak interactions as well as in model field theories is assumed and its consequences for the asymptoticσ-ϱ correlations are drawn,ϱ being the ratio ReF/ImF for the crossing-even forward scattering amplitudeF. It is shown that the form of the correlations depends in an essential way on the absolute bound onσ assumed. Generalizations to the crossing-odd amplitude as well as to non-forward scattering are pointed out.
