Notes: Abstract The vitamin D3 metabolite 1,25(OH)2D3 is probably involved in B lymphocyte ontogeny. We therefore determined the distribution of the 1,25(OH)2D3 receptor in the bursa of Fabricius and spleen cells of 7-day-old chicks, by immunohistochemistry using a monoclonal antibody against the chick intestinal cell 1,25(OH)2D3 receptor. The bursa cells of young (7-day-old) chicks contained large amounts of receptor while the spleen cells did not. The bursa cells of older (35-day-old) chicks contained fewer receptors, but the number of receptors in the spleen increased.

Notes: Summary The REp cells of the bursa follicle medulla of chicken were isolated in vitro. Culture of the REp cells was maintained over a period of 10 days and the cells were observed at 3 and 10 days by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and immunofluorescence. The use of an anticytokeratin monoclonal antibody confirmed their epithelial nature. TEM observations showed the presence of desmonsomes and tonofilaments, which are characteristic of epithelial cells. Furthermore, to some extent the cells regenerated in vitro the network they form in vivo. Though the growth rate becomes slower with time, the features of the REp cells do not significantly change.

Notes: Summary Phytoplankton biomass and distribution of major phytoplankton groups were investigated in relation to sea ice conditions, hydrography and nutrients along three north-south transects in the north western Weddell Sea in early spring 1988 during the EPOS Study (European Polarstern Study), Leg 1. Three different zones along the transects could be distinguished: 1) the Open Water Zone (OWZ) from 58° to 60°S with high chlorophyll a concentrations up to 3.5 μg l−1; 2) the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) from 60° to about 62.5° with chlorophyll a concentrations between 0.1 and 0.3 μg l−1, and 3) the closed pack-ice zone (CPI) from 62.5° to 63.2°S with chlorophyll a concentrations below 0.1 μgl−1. Nutrient concentrations increased towards the south showing winter values under the closed pack-ice. Centric diatoms such as Thalassiosira gravida and Chaetoceros neglectum forming large colonies dominated the phytoplankton assemblage in terms of biomass in open water together with large, long chain forming, pennate diatoms, whereas small pennate diatoms such as Nitzschia spp., and nanoflagellates prevailed in ice covered areas. Fairly low concentrations of phytoplankton cells were encountered at the southernmost stations and many empty diatom frustules were found in the samples. The enhanced phytoplankton biomass in the Weddell-Scotia-Confluence area is achieved through sea ice melting in the frontal zone of two different water masses, the Weddell and the Scotia Sea surface waters.

Notes: Abstract By using JETSET 7.2 ase + e − event generator at different c.m. energies, we studiedsingle jet multiplicity distributions in different rapidity andp T intervals. Good NB behavior is found and related clan structure analysis is performed. Observed differences in the behavior of the 2-and 3-jet samples can be understood in terms of the relative contribution of single quark and gluon jet to the 3-jet sample, which are obtained by selecting event by event in this sample the highest and the lowest energy jet respectively.

Notes: Abstract Serum IgA antiendomysial antibodies (EmA) were found in 61 (87%) of 70 adults and children with untreated celiac disease, whereas IgA antigliadin antibodies (AGA) and IgA R1-antireticulin antibodies (R1-ARA) were positive in 71% and 47%, respectively, of the same patients. Two of the nine untreated celiacs negative for IgA EmA showed positivity for IgA AGA. While IgA AGA and R1-ARA disappeared in all the celiacs, tested one year after gluten-free diet, IgA EmA persisted at low titer in seven (18%) of these 38 subjects, although the jejunal biopsy showed a complete regrowth of jejunal villi. All the disease control patients as well as the blood donors tested were always negative for the three IgA antibodies. Our results state that the search for both IgA EmA and AGA gives the best results in the screening of celiac disease, since the positivity for at least one of these two antibodies allows identification with a 100% specificity of the 90% of untreated celiac patients.

Notes: Polyurethane prepolymers were prepared in ethylacetate from TDI and poly(oxypropilene)glicols) (PE-PU) or poly(tetramethyleneglycoladipate)diols (PES-PU) of different molecular weights (M). Homogeneous membranes were prepared by spreading the pre-polymer solution added with a three, four or pentafunctional crosslinking agent, in the presence of stannous octoate as a catalyst. On increasing M, the PUs Tg decreases regularly in the range +30 to -47°C. PU's are amorphous with the exception of PES-PU obtained from highest M polyester diols. Permeability P, diffusivity D, solubility coefficient S of N2, O2, CO2, CH4, CO were measured at T=35°C (〉Tg).P, D, S do not depend on the crosslinker functionality, but mainly on M. P and D in PE-PU are linear function of T-Tg while in PES-PU the function is not linear. Gas solubility fulfills in general the regular solution theory. P, D, S of water vapor is also given. Permeability decreases in the order H2O〉CO2 〉 O2 〉 CH4 〉 CO 〉 N2. Some practical application based on particular selectivities is suggested.

Notes: Polyurethanes (PU) were prepared using polymeric diols, containing polar groups, as —O—C(O)—O—(carbonate) groups, carbonate and ether (—O—) groups, or carbonate and ester groups [—C(O)—O—]. PUs were prepared by the prepolymer two-step technique using ethyl acetate (EA) as the solvent; the diol was reacted at about +80°C with TDI (ratio 1:2) to give the prepolymer terminated with NCO, which was then cross-linked with triisopropanolamine (TIPA). The membranes were prepared using a Gardner knife and were characterized by differential thermal analysis (DSC). Most of the polymers prepared from low and medium molecular weight diols were amorphous and elastomeric at the temperature of gas transport measurement (35°C). The permeabilities (P) and the diffusion coefficients (D) of different gases (O2, N2, CO2, CH4, CO) were measured by a modified Lyssy apparatus, the solubility coefficient (S) was also calculated. The water-vapor transport properties D and S were measured according to ASTM. Diffusivity data follow the Fujita model and the solubility coefficients the regular solution theory, as developed by Prausnitz and Shair. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The morphological relationships present in the areas of lymphoid infiltration found in the esophagus in Chrysemys scripta elegans were studied by the use of light and transmission electron microscopy. These infiltrations are wide-spread and can be observed in the lamina propria and the covering epithelium. Electron microscopy reveals the presence of epithelial cells with differing characteristics at the apex of the lymphoid infiltrations. The introduction of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) into the esophageal lumen revealed that these cells possess a micropinocytotic activity. On the basis of the morphological and experimental results obtained, a hypothesis is advanced of the existence, also in the turtle, of a local system of uptake of extraneous material, which induces local and systemic immunological processes.
