Description: Amino acids (AA) and carbohydrates (CHO) are produced by phytoplankton as part of the particulate organic carbon (POC) fraction, and can subsequently be released into the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) pool serving as food for heterotrophs. We investigated changes in quantity and quality of POC and DOC, individual AA and individual CHO across Fram Strait in summer 2017. We evaluate the organic matter processing and show that AA and CHO composition substantially differs between the particulate and dissolved fractions. The particulate fraction was enriched in essential AA and the CHO galactose, xylose/mannose, and muramic acid. In the dissolved fraction non-essential AA, several neutral CHO, and acidic and amino CHO were enriched. Our results are important for the future when changing conditions in the Central Arctic Ocean (Atlantification, warming, decreasing ice concentrations) may increase primary production and consequently degradation. The AA and CHO signatures left behind could be used as tracers after the fact to infer changes in microbial loop processes and food web interactions.

Description: We assessed the responses of solitary cells of Arctic Phaeocystis pouchetii (Strain PS78) grown under a matrix of temperature (2°C vs. 6°C), light intensity (55 vs. 160 μmol photons m-2 s-1) and CO2 partial pressures (pCO2; 400 vs. 1000 μatm). Before the experiments, the strain (isolated during Polarstern cruise PS78 in 2011) was kept as stock culture at 1° in 0.2 µm sterile-filtered Arctic seawater (Salinity 33), enriched with vitamins and trace metals according to F/2 medium (Guillard & Ryther, 1962). Nitrate and phosphate were added in concentrations of 100 and 6 µmol L-1, respectively. Experiments were conducted between May 2016 and September 2017 at the Alfred-Wegener-Institute, using standardized media and continuous light exposition. Next to acclimation parameters (growth rates, particulate and dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen, chlorophyll a content), we measured physiological processes in-vivo (electron transport rates and net photosynthesis) using fast-repetition rate fluorometry and membrane-inlet mass spectrometry.

Description: The collection of zooplankton swimmers and sinkers in time-series sediment traps provides a unique insight into year-round and inter-annual trends in zooplankton population dynamics. Such samples are particularly valuable in remote and difficult to access areas such as the Arctic Ocean, where samples from the ice-covered seasons are rare. In the present study, we investigated zooplankton composition based on swimmers and sinkers collected by sediment traps at water depths of 180-280 m, 800-1320 m, and 2320-2550 m, over a period of 16 years (2000-2016) at the central station of the LTER (Long-Term Ecological Research) HAUSGARTEN observatory in the Fram Strait. The time-series data include the abundance of copepoda, foraminifera, ostracoda, amphipoda, pteropoda, and chaetognatha that were collected in the sediment trap time-series.
