Notes: The nonlinear instability of two layers of ferrofluids in relative motion is studied under external driving. With the use of the method of multiple scaling, a generalized derivation of the amplitude evolution is obtained in marginally unstable regions of parameter space. A Melnikov function is formulated for such an instability and it is shown that there exist transverse homoclinic orbits leading to chaos.
