Summary This is an investigation of the experience of a group of mental health students who, as part of their training, participated in a four day non-residential Group Relations Conference composed of analytically oriented (Tavistock) and social psychologically oriented (NTL) groups. The investigation focuses on who subsequently joins groups, what is learned in Tavistock and NTL groups, and the relationship between the Training Conference and the progress or initiation of psychotherapy. Striking similarity is found among those who join and those who do not join groups following the conference. Learning in the conference centers on issues of power and authority and less on more personal, individual concerns. The absence of “group casualties” is noted. In order to place the results in a broader framework the findings are evaluated from a systems perspective.
