Summary The organizational and legal aspects of emergency medicine have not kept pace with recent technological advances in mobile communication. However, telemedicine applications have the potential to significantly improve processes in the field of emergency medicine through rapid recording and processing of information. Numerous uses of telematics in emergency medicine can be determined through economic analyses of current situations and by identifying shortcomings in emergency treatment and quality management. Many projects that involve telematic devices for prehospital emergency management (e.g. home monitoring, automatic emergency call systems, telematic support systems for dispatch centers, and mobile applications for emergency transportation systems) have reported impressive effects. It is now our task to further specify shortcomings, articulate the substantial requirements, evaluate and integrate successfully tested components into a fully functional system.

Zusammenfassung Die enormen technischen Fortschritte im Bereich der mobilen Kommunikation sind im täglichen Leben allgegenwärtig. Die Weiterentwicklung der entsprechenden notfallmedizinischen Infrastruktur sowie des organisatorischen und rechtlichen Umfeldes hinken jedoch den technischen Möglichkeiten hinterher. Gerade in der Notfallmedizin kann aber davon ausgegangen werden, dass telemedizinische und telematische Applikationen zu deutlichen Veränderungen der Handlungsabläufe führen. Bestehende Schwachstellen im Bereich des Notfallmanagements, die Belange des Qualitätsmanagements und nicht zuletzt auch ökonomische Betrachtungen liefern eine Vielzahl von Ansatzpunkten für den Telematikeinsatz in der Notfallmedizin. In zahlreichen Projekten konnten teilweise beeindruckende Effekte gezeigt werden. Diese erstrecken sich auf alle Glieder der Rettungskette: Homemonitoring, automatische Notrufsysteme, Telematikapplikationen in Rettungsleitstellen und der mobile Einsatz in den Rettungsmitteln. Unsere Aufgabe ist es nun, bestehende Schwachstellen in der Notfallmedizin zu analysieren, die tatsächlichen Anforderungen an die Technik zu formulieren und unterschiedliche Lösungsansätze zu evaluieren und ggf. zu integrieren.
