Summary 1. Determination of the absolute number of basophiles in the blood as an additional test method for thyroid function ist to be recommended. 2. The changes of the number of basophiles associated with various conditions of thyroid function appears to be a result of a direct effect of the circulating thyroid hormone on the basophiles of the blood. 3. This hypothetical mode of action must be taken into consideration in the evaluation of the test results. This is especially valid for follow-up observations.

Zusammenfassung 1. Die Absolutzählung der Blutbasophilen ist als zusätzliche Untersuchung in der Schilddrüsendiagnostik zu empfehlen. 2. Die Veränderungen der Basophilenzahl bei verschiedenen Schilddrüsenfunktionszuständen scheint die Folge einer direkten Wirkung zirkulierenden Schilddrüsenhormons auf die Blutbasophilen zu sein. 3. Dieser angenommene Wirkungsmechanismus ist bei der Beurteilung der Untersuchungsergebnisse, insbesondere bei Verlaufsbeobachtungen zu berücksichtigen.
