Abstract:
The purpose of this study, which is a comparative education study, is to investigate the social studies curriculum in Turkey and Canada (Alberta Province) in terms of skill dimension. the research design is basic qualitative research. Data were collected through document analysis, and current social studies curriculums on websites of both countries were used as a source of primary data. Data obtained were analyzed through descriptive analysis. It was observed under the themes “similarities” and “differences” by examining basic skills included in the social studies curriculum and skills on the basis of grade level. According to the findings, basic skills to be acquired in the social studies curriculum in Turkey and Canada (Alberta Province) differ both numerically and in terms of explanation of their content. In addition, critical thinking, research, communication, decision making, problem solving, and social participation skills are commonly included in both countries’ curriculum. Besides, it is seen that skills taught on the basis of grade level are shaped under four main titles in the social sciences curriculum in Canada (Alberta Province). In this context, the results obtained were discussed in the light of the relevant literature, and some suggestions were recommended.
