Abstract:
In the Hainaut province, in Belgium, great vertical and cylindrical structures pass through the productive Westphalian. They are several hundred metres thick and were named "crans" by the coal-miners. They contain rocks from the lower Cretaceous cover, for example the Wealdian formations (clays, lignites and sands). Those pits result from deep karst in the dinantian limestones under the Namuro-Westphalian.
